@mel956, Well, first off this is not a Shaolin set at all. It looks like some sort of Moslem Long fist to me. Although, a lot of that is called Shaolin when it actually isn't. When you said it was Northern Shaoin and the 3rd form that told me it's the modern Chang Chuan used in Wushu competitions, which is why it seems familiar to me.
As for actual shaolin temple training, there are hundreds of sets encompassing dozens of systems and styles. Louhan, Tai Tzu, Xiao and Da Hongquan, Pao Cuan Five fist and Rou quan are the most famously know, but are still just the core of it all.
Shaolin is not a single style, it's a university of differing arts all preserved in one large school. It;s like going to college and studying different courses.
okay. understood. i never said it wasnt. i have yet to see it being used in wushu competitions. and im using a generalized term for shaolin. sure, there are many different styles, but whatever you call it doesnt matter as long as it is there. shaolin is a single style because it differs from every other style not developed from the shaolin. just because it is a single style does not mean it ends there. it branches out into different groups.
And thanks for helping me figure out why it looks familiar to me.
My focus is now on Tai Tzu (Shaolin 32 tai tzu,the old Hong Fist of Zhao Kuang Yin, Guandong's form and the small ape/monkey set. it's been so long since I have seen any of the more modern stuff I forgot it all.
When you go to college, you don't say you are learning "Harvard". You say you are majoring in economics, with a minor in sports medicine at Harvard university.
that is inaccurate, because you cant compare college to a kung fu. you can compare college to the kung fu SCHOOL. so of ocurse you dont say you are learning "harvard" just as you would not say you are learning "kung fu academy". you would say you are majoring in economics with a minor in sports medicine at harvards universityl ike you owuld say "i am studying northern shaolin kung fu with daily qi gong exercises at _____ kung fu academy"
I don't know where you are, but in the US many people talk about Shaolin like it is a single style. They will say I am learning "Shaolin", rather than say I am learning style X from Shaolin, and they never know the difference.
ciao...
