The U.S. was not obliged to get involved in a European war, and the U.S. was not a military super power like it is today, in fact it was militarily very weak. Many Americans remembered WW1, and did not want to get involved in a second European-started world war.
The British [and by extension their colonial empire and commonwealth, like Canada] were obliged, by treaties, to get involved once Germany started invading neighboring nations. Nazi Germany was a threat to their empire and colonies. Britain and France drew a line in the sand with Poland, and declared war on Germany when it invaded Poland, starting WW2.
The Europeans and Brits could have stopped the Nazis long before WW2 if they had used force when Nazis were weak. They didn't.
