I definitely wouldn't say that Neil started WAY off key, I think that's a bit of a harsh thing to write... He probably just couldn't properly hear the music when it was quiet in the beginning and thus he was slightly flat. Not too bad, really. He is pitch perfect 99.9% of the time of his long and illustrious career, and I doubt he's EVER been way off key.
Shouldn't this be considered to be "very rare" as for as a Split Enz performance for that song? I remember the "Tomorrow Show" with Tom Snyder. With Carson on a 10:30 - 12 cst, Snyder did his thing 'til 1:30, until they both backed up to an hour!
Ohhhhh, I have been waiting to see this again ever since the night it was shown. Thank you so much!! Do you have the interview as well? I remember Tom Snyder seeming amazed that they spoke English! I also remember wearing a Maori necklace and Tom asking about it.
This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much for posting it. I remember my mother listening to the Split Enz when I was little (in the early 80s). I literally grew up on their music, which is odd for an American. Even now that I am in my thirties they remain in my top 3 favorite bands of all time.
They are simply one of the greatest rock bands of New Wave. It's a bummer that this isn't on the Tom Snyder compilation. But then again, The Clash, Adam Ant, and U2 wasn't featured on the DVD collection either.
I didn't discover them until "True Colors" hit the states. I tried to catch up with all their work after the fact. The NZ radio documentary about them was outstanding but it took almost a year after it aired before I could hear it here in the US. Love these guys.
Oh my God how i miss this song on the radio.

I've been listening to this band for 35 years... that's five years before this song was a hit. They never let me down during their era.
