What? It's not a 2 plane crank, only the VRH35Z and VRH35L and VRH50ADE race motors have flat plane cranks, this has a regular cross pattern crank like a Chev or a Ford.
That's it. Those 180 degree spaced cranks are called "single plane" as far as i know. Firing order Cross pattern is therefore 90 degree spaced, or 2 plane, isn't it?
single plane - two inline fours, two plane - two vee fours. VH45 belongs to latter category.
those nissan racing engines, ferrari V8s, lotus esprit V8, TVR cerbera V8 have firing order like
1357
2468
1-8-5-4-7-2-3-6 or something like that. It's like regular inline four 1-3-4-2 on each bank, with evenly 180 spaced ignition events along each bank. Crank looks plane and is called single plane. Personally i do not like the sound of these V8s - like regular SR20.
VH41, VH45, BMW M6x Chev and Ford V8s are different - firing is spaced oddly, IIRC 90-180-270-180 along each bank, for example firing order is 1-8-7-3-6-5-4-2 for VH45. Note cylinder 3 firing after 7 and 2 after 4 - 90 degree spacing. Thats why they sound so much better (IMO). Crank looks like cross and has two planes and is so called.
A couple of points. I replied to you because a dual plane crank as you call it, is standard in almost every V8... only really supercars or race engines typically use flat plane cranks due to the vibration generated by this configuration... hence why I thought you were remarking on something 'out of the ordinary' about it,
Excuse my poor english - i`m from Russia :-) BTW i'm watching your posts at NICO closely, esp. about cam prototyping and VH41 installation into R31. Here i own an ENR34 skyline and hope to install VH41 one day, with 45 internals, front diff assembly and possibly GTR getrag gearbox. Want it to be a competitor for audi RS4 - 4wd, V8 powered, light daily driver. And if you accomplish your cam project, maybe as powerful as audi -hope it is possible to reach 420-450 crank hp remaining NA.Good luck!
I assumed you'd meant it was flat plane. But this aside, flat plane cranks don't operate the engine like two inline 4's, it's actually a lot more like two V4's... and yeah, they don't sound as tough, but this configuration is usually used in race application due to the increased revs & power delivery resulting from its use.

2plane crank V8 sounds excellent, no doubt. Have you dynoed it? Arnt 3 inch a little too big for 4.5l V8?

I took those "single plane" and "dual plane" designations from David Vizard's "Exhaust science demystified" article )) That's how he had called them

Sounds great man! Whats your setup? Whats the exhaust? How does it sound at idle and cruising - isnt it a bit loud in the car?
