It is called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It is a horrible disease that affect all the voluntary muscles including breathing and swallowing. Currently there is no cure :(

The trach does not have cuff and there the leakage between the tube and trachea allow air to escape into the vocal cords. She also learned how to use the ventilator to help her speak. (when disconnected she does not have enough power to make any sound). We thought that she would never speak after the tracheotomy and it was a nice surprise to hear her talk again.
