I have two feelings regarding this video as a 32 yr old black woman that wears weaves as of the last two years. I do think that there is an issue w/ black women who wear hair weaves because they don't like their own hair, black women who favor 'good' hair, meaning hair that is loosely curled or wavy, over 'nappy' hair, meaning hair that is tightly coiled. It's really sad that they can't or rather, won't see the beauty of ALL types of hair. They feel such a strong compulsion to hide what's naturally there instead of embracing it.

@hwiley09 Another point is that some of the women in this group really don't know how to take care of their own hair so, seeing no growth, they get frustrated and start wearing extensions. I don't think it's healthy to wear weave for being ashamed of one's hair, but I'm actually partial to kinky twists or braids for the purpose of protecting one's hair temporarily in order to grow it out.
@hwiley09 I have kinky natural hair myself, and when I wear braids I'm not ashamed to let anyone know it's not my hair. The difference is that I also love to wear my natural hair out (it's much more becoming than braids), only I can't always do that because it gets dry and brittle.

I wear them because of thinning hair a gene passed on from my grandmother and I can't undo... But y should I wear a sign on my head justifying what I do and why? I do think that there is an issue w/ black women who wear hair weaves because they don't like their own hair, black women who favor 'good' hair, meaning hair that is loosely curled or wavy, over 'nappy' hair, meaning hair that is tightly coiled. It's really sad that they can't or rather, won't see the beauty of ALL types of hair. They feel such a strong compulsion to hide what's naturally there instead of embracing it.

I don't think it's healthy to wear weave for being ashamed of one's hair, but I'm actually partial to kinky twists or braids for the purpose of protecting one's hair temporarily in order to grow it out.

Coming at people in an argumentative way is the quickest and most effective way to get them to ignore us. Peacefully disagreeing with them, however, lets them see that we aren't cruel or intolerant, and that we're actually reasonable people. In this way, maybe we can begin to change the way black women are perceived by society.
