Wow! a great video that you posted here. All of the Pontiacs shown are beautiful. As a owner of several 70's era Pontiac Vehicles ( My GM product of choice ) I can tell you first hand that those cars were solid handling performers at a great price. I owned 3 Firebirds ordered new. The first a 75 Firebird Espirit. Man it really handled like a big car. The Firebirds in this video @ the 8:16 that the announcer claims to be the Formula Models are not Formula's. Maybe base model Firebirds.
Now THAT'S a Firebird! And that luxurious red and white 1972 GranVille is really elegant. Even the 1970s Ventura II was a solid car. And I remember that these Pontiacs from the 1970s ran for years and years. Parents would eventually hand them down to their kids in high school and they still ran and ran. And if you were smart you kept a 1970s Firebird Formula 400 in great condition as they sell to collectors today. I doubt that any junky 2011 Nissan will interest collectors 40 years from now.
@KiranaForever It's beautiful and impressive in its own right, but like most electric cars, probably has some severe limitations for ownership. Its cost is also quite prohibitive.
I wouldn't touch a new Leaf. The Volt has an interesting solution to the "electric problem" but its range keeps getting lowered every time they mention it.
For their time, these were luxury cars at regular car prices, I believe.
@optio4 My first car, was a 1976 Pontiac Grand Le Man's. It was white with firethorn red inside. it was a beautiful car, had the Grand Prix interior. tilt wheel, and one first American cars with the light dimmer with the turn signal. That is when when you could tell a Buick from a Pontiac. It had the firethorn landau top and factory 8 track!!! . Had the Rally II wheels, and I think the best look GM A body for that year.. I wish I had kept that car. Take care all!
This is why,,if you have ever noticed,,that most Pontiacs like the Firebird,Trans-Am,Ventura,GTO,,LeMans,,and most of thier mid-sized cars ALWAYS smelled musty and of moisture after only 1 year of sitting outside. The body shells were designed bullitproof, but had minimal seam sealer and little if any undercoating. This is also why the trunk pans and floors and bottoms of the doors are "always" gone. No rust protection due to assembly time issues.
these cars were HEAVY,and did not have all this airbag and electronic junk like now,,which drives up the cost ridiculously high.Even the small Ventura was a heavy car and built like a tank. The reason the Firebirds and Ventura's rusted away so bad is due to General Motors over-engineering the damn body shells to the point the factories couldn't put them together right in the time allowed, thus came the "get it out the door" mentality and poor fitmint and water leaks unbelievable, and RUST !!
The reason these cars cost so little back then was the dollar was worth much more than it is now. That means you got more for what you paid for.But for the era in which they were made,,they were only built to last 5 years till you bought a new model.I remember when these cars were new. That Grandville in this video was "rated" at 370 horsepower,,,which is rediculous,,,those 455's (which was STANDARD in a Grandville) actually put out close to 450 horse.Read on,,i'll tell you more....
@singlejeff69@ladietiger Actually, it's simply good old inflation. We also make a lot more money too. Adjust for inflation, they'd be into the 20 and 30Ks that today's decent cars are.
The dealer says, "we will let them give away the 2 ugliest colored cars we have on the lot, but make em sports cars." Dookie Brown and how about that other color nobody seems to want, Guacamole exposed to the air for too long Green. Yeah, give em those 2.
@TheTheeggmann You might not like those colors now but they were very popular then and we didn't think of it that way. How many color choices do you get on new cars today? Not many.
@TheTheeggmann Those were simply the display vehicles. When you win a car, you go to the dealership and choose the color and trim you want. You can also add extra options at your own expense.
Whoever said they were crap has never owned one. I currently own a 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville that I have owned for 10 years. I have used it at least 3 days a week (I have three cars). I have never, never had any troubles except for needing the alternator rebuilt. Even the power windows still work perfectly, everything works! Its been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. The engine and transmission still perform like the day it was new!
@cololover07 i know your comment is old, but i totally agree with you, if you tap a 70's car you hurt your knuckle, but the olther its kinds sounds pretty cheap and you hurt the car, lol, peace out bud:)
The pair of Firebirds near the end were called 'Formula Firebirds'. I'm almost certain Formula Firebirds had twin scoops on the hood. Those look like base models -though still really nice!
Actually yes, Pontiac always kept the Bonneville as thier flagship car, but the 4-Door Bonny did better than the 2-door in sales,so Pontiac decided to incorporate the Grandville as a 2-door model with a standard 455 motor and more horsepower and still keep all the "luxury" anmenities as the Bonneville had, thats why they labeled it "sports luxury"
Dude, I drove a 71 LeMans everyday in all kinds of weather for 5 years until I sold it 2 years ago. Everyone that ever rode in it, loved it. it had a nice ride, ran well, and was a good looking automobile. the reason i sold it was i just needed a newer automobile to drive everyday because the old poncho had gone 40 years without a major rebuild and i just didn't have the cash to do it.
new cars have no style or imagination. The newer Mustangs are nice, I hope the new camaro is going to be cool, the new challenger is a decent car but for some reason they just don't have that fire breathing, meat consuming, raw testostrine, look or feel. Instead of being carnovoirs they are more like vegitariens.
Old cars are the best. What IS crap are these new things we have now. Most of them anyway. Ugly, full of plastic and too much computer control. The future of cars is not promising to me at all, as a matter of fact the future of cars is depressing to me.
@TroutButter Totally agree with you. Future cars will be more crap than are today. They aren't exciting, glamorous and they have nothing except design.
I wouldn't say they were crap. If you maintain them they last forever. People are used to cars they don't have to anything more than fill them up and change the oil every now and again. Once they are wore out though they are trash. The older cars needed routine maintenance such as greasing up the front end, changing the points, etc. However, they are easy to work on and someone with even a little mechanical knowledge can keep them on the road for a long time.
@skylark68 Yeah, the older cars used thicker virgin steel. Many new cars, especially japs, use thinner recycled steel for the body which has lots of impurities in it. That's why they rust out so fast if the paint gets scratched or the drain holes are plugged. New cars are hard to work with, there are so many hoses and wires in the front end its a pain to replace or inspect simple parts. And on used "newer" cars half the maintenance is on some emissions control or sensor/control system.
I'm surprised tax and license were included(nowadays, you're on your own).
