Will this work for other lizards? Like the Mali Uromastyx? Because mine's such a bitch to me. When I try to pet it, is swipes it's tail, hisses, and sometimes tries to bite. But this it's only 0-20 minutes after it comes out from sleeping. After that, when I set it on my bed... It pees. ._.; But soon, i'll get a baby B/G green headed Tegu. c:
@MindMorons If the lizard sees it as a prey item....yes. But you also have to worry about the dogs trying to eat it as well, or them being aggressively playful.
why you think its a dog ? just offer him food, sohe associate you with food, then when the tegu feels safe from you he will go to you asking fr food, try grabbing him whit leaver gloves on, and make him think you're not oing to hurt him, and enter your arm i the cage and burrow just like they do or do paceful movements that odor doesnt work becouse your hands and arms dont smell the same as yourback or chest, or shoulders, just try this one and will be more quickly, i
can i give it chicken instead of rats, i mean im ok feeding it crickets, mealworms, waxworms and super worms, and fish but i dont like rats cabn i feed it chiken instead?
@Ebillan Oh they collect wood and light a fire at their base camp in the wild so they can cook the food they catch? Hmmm makes sense to me too...yea no.
@xscottx3 If your lizard that has been eating raw meats bites you, you run a higher risk of the wound getting infected, or of you getting sick from it.
@xscottx3 I'll also point out that humans can also technically eat raw meat, and there are people out there who live on raw-meat diets. That doesn't mean we all should.
Cypress mulch is the best, make sure is natural and has no color added. And about her diet, I feed her raw chicken. By the way, in Argentina they eat from garbage cans, so it really does not matter if it is raw or cooked. In the wild they are scavengers.
What are you using for substrate? mines in peat moss, sphagnum moss and fir bark right now with a little bit of coconut husk and moss and im looking for something a little less smelling / dirty.
hey dude take the moss out of the cage as soon as you can.. it grows a fungus that causes infections on the tegus skin. The best substrate to use for a tegu is cypress mulch,, it holds humidity great and is perfect for tegus!
Yeah, thats pretty much what i've read everywheres, only problem is that i cant get it in where i live. What are some other options for me? what else works well other than cypress mulch?
hmm i dont know what else to use other than cypress.. you could probably mix potting soil and sand together. But just make sure that the soil has no chemicals in it. And if there is a petco around you i know they sell a tiny bag of cypress sometimes.
ive tried the shirt thing, with my argentine b/w. if i go near his tank, half of the time he jumps at the glass trin to get me. or when i stick my hand in his tank, he runs and jumps at my hand. anything else i can try ? ive had savanah monitors that where nicer then him.
i always pluck the old skin off everytime my female tegu sheds. it just nice to pull the old skin and see the new, brighter skin appear before your eyes.
is it better to buy them as babies or does it matter if their kinda grown
LADYSTOMPS111920 1 month ago
@LADYSTOMPS111920 the younger the better to tame them.

I have a baby tegu thats like maybe 3months old. Would that work for her as well?
CrazyViper100 10 months ago
If you handle them often as babies they will be extremely tame. Mine have never bit me and I've had them for about 6 years now.

i personaly dont like the cyprus mulch, the pices of wood re very large.
i like to use a mix of 50% coco husk, 25%Moss, 25% Soil.
CemetaryGatesML 1 year ago
@CemetaryGatesML true, it may be ingested and cause problems. but it is still the best choice. you can always try combinations and percentages.

does this really tame a tegu? cause mine is really aggressive and bites, and also is quite jumpy when i put food in its cage.

@ViscoHD
yes, it does. give it a try and you will see.

@security317 You aren't supposed to feed them raw meat- only cooked, look it up.
