I wasn't even alive when they showed this. My mom got the series on DVD and after watching it I fell in love. I'm not a lover of the 3rd book, but 1 & 2 are amazing. I love this theme. It is so beautiful! :)

Holy Cow! They don't make tv shows like this anymore just look at the list of actors: Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Mitchum, and for heaven's sake, Gene Kelly AND Johnny Cash!!!! No wonder tv can't make money anymore. They keep producing reality shows that only a small group of people watch. What ever happened to "must watch tv"? They can't make miniseries like this anymore because of the collapse of the automobile industry. Car commercials paid for these expensive miniseries. Reality series are a way of cutting costs. Networks would love to do more scripted television if they could, since no one buys DVDs or watch reruns of reality shows (believe me, they tried).

North and south was shown in Sweden in 1987. I loved it and I hope I can find the DVD even here in Sweden. It was the first time I saw Patrick Swayze on TV and movie. It has been many movies after that and I hope he will recover from his cancer so that we can see much more of him in the future.

This series is near and dear to me( except Heaven and Hell-Book 3) I loved the books also though they are vastly different than the movie ( Orry dies in book 2).I think it gets me more now that I have been to the Plantation where it was filmed in South Carolina( Boone Hall Plantation) and now that Patrick Swayze is so sick....

Book3 wasn't good yet another actress playing Issabelle, yet another playing Charles, George having more than 1 child even thou in end of book2 had the one and book3 not based long after book2. Copper Orries bro who wasn't mentioned in book1 or2 suddenly shows up that was stupid and made book3 into a kind of joke for me especially as a lot of it centers around him. George showing signs of attraction towards Madelind before his wife died.  M same not long after Orrie died that was strange.

North and South I got it last may as said in other comment. I cried, as me and mum hadn't watched it since I was 8 back in 1991 when at the time had the channel SKY ONE. One of my best friends parents borrowed it off me and watched it all twice crying through it. Book3 that friend got it for me on dvd last Christmas I was disapointed with it and so was my friends parents when saw it. 1. book3 George had more than 1 child didn't in book2, Cooper an unheard of bro of Orrio in it a joke.

I got North and South book1&2 on dvd from my sister last May when I was v.sick if I hadn't gone to the dr. in time would have been rushed to hospital. I watched the two books no lie started on a thursday had them watched by that Monday evening was so sick couldn't move off the couch as wass in so much pain so watched north and south nothing else had to ring my sister to come from up stairs to change the dvd once one finished. i've heard of this theme in entirety before, and i'm pretty sure the last 2~3 seconds got cut. but since i listened to an audio track and this is probably a tv opening titles screen, the producers may well have decided to skip those last few notes.
