actually a good video for antique lovers , those old mercs were something else, if you had ever driven one , you will know it haunts you to have one as a souvenier.
People here are judging this way too hard. It is an audition video after all, it isn't about camera work and sound, it is about featuring the personalities, and I thought these two were very good indeed. Not everybody has HD cameras and a sound crew, cut them some slack.
Some parts of the show is not what I would call professional.....
But about the car, wow!
I don´t say everything Mercedes has ever built is great, but the 600 definitely is! Comparing it to any US made luxury car at the time when it comes to build quality is just ridicoulus, period!
Have pretty much unrestored 1957 Cadillac myself which is a really lovely car. But when I compare it to my friends Mercedes 180 of the same year, it´s not very well put together....(Lot faster though.....)
Finally, he (the host commentator) aptly and succinctly summaries the mess-on-wheels: take a listen, beginning at 2.47 and wrapping up at 2.55: done; press CRUSH.
@sixpoint3: Your prig & sprig rant paired to its foolish attribution to me of "myopic vision" and/or "a glaring information gap" as to the universe that comprises Automotive Design & Engineering history has been proven inane. Mercedes Benz ('err the muggly chic from whom that enterprise derives its name), akin to the tacky brainwashing advertisement "status" mantra inculcated by the similarly over-rated "branded dorks" eg, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Jill Sander share a certain other legacy
Crypto unpleasantries masked ... 'err unmasked here, suffice it say that Mercedes Benz did achieve -- despite itself, and owing to two highly disenchanted later ex-employees -- wondrous refinement, with its 1957 300SL Roadster convertible, often overlooked or merely forgotten, such an anomaly was its existence; and, too, with its 1959 220S and 220SE. However, only USA’s Navy developed technology has availed longevity; most had simply rusted to death: RUST BULLET!
: "Brilliant", indicting the legendary and august Chrysler Motor Works, with your inane and snide remark. Clearly, you suffer from an information gap: German-Americans who made up Chrysler from its inception were often of the same lineage that over two centuries earlier migrated eg, Hessians, Huguenot-Francos, nobleman: genetically gifted types. In fact, Benz sued Chrysler, and Studebaker, for a variety of reasons. Chrysler’s best trump MB’s on most scores; looks/engineering: TCoO!
@CarCriticAssessor. How does one 'wield a dearth' of something..? Your opinions re the aesthetic appeal of the 600 are of course entirely personal, your mangling of the English language is not. As for the American cars you mention, they certainly have their devotees, but undeniably lack the precision, quality of materials and engineering innovations of their European contemporaries, of which the 600 was the premier example
NO -- unfortunately, your claims clash with facts. Most Benzes, including the much touted 600s, lack anything beyond a cheese-box-on-wheels aesthetic; typically abysmal dash/controls council is at best non-inspirational; overall dowdy, one plus factor, generally pre-late-1990s, is their wonderfully precise fabrication ... However, (a) they lack beauty, (b) garner no physics prize for mechanical engineering -- a simple cursory evaluation, by popping their hood: convolution maximus; sans luxury!
This man clearly wields a dearth of automotive history knowledgebase: try the Cadillacs eg, the 1957-58 Eldorados series ... ding-a-ling; the various Ghia Lincolns; Chryslers; Studebaker exteriors; for ultra exteriors/interiors -- late '50's through early '60s Corvette; the Thunderbird series, of which the latter appears to literally take flight ... yet while standing still. One Benz model does hold its own ... a certain mid-'50s convertible. At best, the touted gull-wings fail.

Your video became successful by explaining that precious car: Mercedes-Benz 600
That's why I suggested to reassemble & reproduce again, I don't need the new model of 600 Pullman, and then i suggest that 600 Pullman become popular & cheaper, u may change into 200 - 400 pull man just like 2 - 4 liter 4 to six cylinder engine! And then this car(600 Pullman)'s interior is the BEST interior design ever!!!
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps Efi and tank clean and rustfree
really, Jeff, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm kneeling for forgivness, only I don't erase the first comment because it fits Australian Top Gear. good hell a lot of work, man.
Aw shit, it's an amateur tape. Sorry guys, good non-professional job! Still quite easy to take it for The Australian Top Gear Show, those were real horrible and with a budget.
That was actually pretty good, shame you didn't make the TG AUS as it's shit anyway and I think you would have helped it be better somehow. Good choice of car to review I love the old 600 such a wonderful car. I've had an S600L but it's not the same! :(
I read somewhere that in the 60's, Sir Stirling moss broke the lap record at a European race track in a short wheelbase 600 - and he had the car full of passengers! The Maybach price is not one million dollars unless it's the landolet version.- Only one built as far as I know. I looked at a long wheelbase with glass roof and divider window model today. price:$500,000
The 600 is awesome, but the Maybach is not so tasteless either. It is no oldtimer (my all time favorites are Mercedes 600, 770 and 540, and RR Phantom V and VI) but compared to other cars of today it's decent enough. I like the Bentley Arnage/Mulsanne and Rolls-Royce Phantom as much as the Maybach. The Phantom is used by people with equally little taste (all rapers, specifically 50Cent and other celebrities). The Bentleys are the only ones that have stuck to the original demographic.
Nice, pity the world's TV sets are not wired to the net cos when Jeremy and the boys are pissing about on break we could watch other less funded versions. No, really not bad at all. I can lend you my wired mic if you like ;) I suppose we're use to the high production value of the Brit version but there are so many cars they never test and the regular auto media puts most of us to sleep + you'd never be able to crack the Poland joke!
The presenter looks vaguely familiar to me - I think he used to host a very informative program on the BBC about fine Cuban cigars, scotch whisky and other male interests......?
you did a bettrr job than the blokes they chose

0:34 the jacket borrowed from Jeremy Clarkson
0:52 the slideshow put together by the Stig.
I think they recorded vision by a calculator and sound by a microwave. I really love the Mercedes(es?) but honestly I can't stand watching it.

Look at the adjustable rear seat! Even in luxury cars of today, that's fairly unusual.
