This was gonna be the song on the end of cloudy with a chance of meatballs! lol, but it didnt go, so they made the song its raining sunshine sung by miranda cosgrove ;)
@nathantylersturgi @ @nathantylersturgill-[-READ/SATONICA] -I LOVE ELO, but the song 'Xanadu' that RUSH [recorded much earlier[1977] than the ELO version[1980] for an album [A Farewell to Kings]where in RUSH showed itself as a band HEAD & SHOULDERS in proficiency, talent & technical skills], is because RUSH you never find them resting on their laurels, and they are constantly upping their game. Can you tell I'm a RUSH fan girl yet?
@nathantylersturgill @ As an aside, Olivia Newton John also starred in an 80's film, performing "Zanadu" as part of the soundtrack, performing WITH ELO. Not impressive. YES, Nathan, you are right, their is only one rendition of "XANADU" and it is done by Geddy ee, Neil Peart, & Alex Lifeson.
Although both versions are great, I definitely like ONJ's better. The there's a good contrast between the broad range of her voice that seems more magical than this.
Just seen a tribute band to ELO(The ELO Experience-brilliant,if you like ELO you gotta see 'em!)-didn't realise this was ELO's ONLY "number 1"(with ONJ);still prefer this version, though Olivia Newton John's one was still damned good....LOL
I always hated this version. It sounds like a half-finished demo. There is almost no emotivity in it unlike the ELO songs in the actual movie ("I'm Alive", "Don't Walk Away", etc).
i agree onj version is far better but it ELO backing that makes athe Xanadu soundtrack what it is MAGNIFICENT without ELO this soundtrack wouldnt be half as good!!!
Being a fellow Brummie, I adore ELO. But I can't help thinking that the drumming in virtually all of Jeff Lynne's subsequent projects sounds exactly the same - this version of the song for example could just as easily be a Travelling Wilbury's song!
I love this version! I love the Olivia Newton-John version (with ELO as backup) but this is much better! Jeff did a great job on it! I too mrzeegrr have been an ELO fan since I was 7 years old (1976 was my first taste of them!). I'm 39 now and I still love them just as much! Magnificient band and my favorite band too! Take a look at my profile and you'll see why!
I love this version because ELO seemed to be abandoned in the movie 'Xanadu'..I think it's really not fair not to involve ELO in 'person' in the movie..I must admit I was a bit dissapointed seeing only the Tubes! But Gene Kelly is too great for the show!!
I like both versions. This one is more nuts and bolts, Jeff Lynne singing is an improvement. Plus there's an interesting little guitar part that really stands out for me that I didn't hear on the original version. Classic song from my childhood, still sounds good today.
He was just having fun with his own version I agree with you he did change the lyrics from the original this version can be found on as the box set Flashback ELO released in 2000 and no you are not going deaf
Ahhhh XanadU...It's a new drug similar to Viagra and I just got mine in the mail...it's simply a vhs tape of just a comilation of Olivia Newton-John's scenes from XanadU...and I'm here to tell you--It Fookin Works!!!

actually, Jeff Lynne a.k.a the original ELO wrote this song for Olivia. I think both Lynne and Farrar are the best minds in mellow music (so I called it) But I don't think we can start comparing between the two. I think both ELO and ONJ's version are good

Who needed the Beatles to reunite in the 1970s? Not with this song. This is the best Beatles song George Harrison never wrote. Awesome.

I love ELO but the Xanadu that Rush put out in the 70's is heads and shoulders, in sound and technical skill, above this one.

We don't have creative bands/musicians anymore ELO gave us so many masterpieces. This is a superb song but Olivia did more with it.
