Oh the memories. Class 9201 in Orland here. I went to Prototype in NY D1G. This video is what is expected from recruiting. They paint a good picture of what it is like but if you are smart you can see through the BS. You will get an education and you get paid but you will clean! Clean clean clean. This place is the best it will get. I have been told the requirements are relaxed but I am sure the Fleet will sort out the incompetent operators.
at EO A school the volleyball pit was never used for playing volleyball it was the beat down pit usually after dinner and before room inspection day so there would be sand everywhere
Im sooo glad I found this video, I am shipping to basic on january 26th, and will be attending the nuclear college in SC. Before this vid I had absolutely no idea what to expect; no I do :) thanks
I just qualified MO at the S8G prototype. I just want to let all you out there in P-School know, remember your A-school stuff. In fact, for an MO at least, our checkouts contained more A-school Knowledge than P-school knowledge. Don't brain dump the shit
I hated my time as a nuke for the most part, but this school definitely prepares you at how to excel in college afterwords. I.E. constructive studying/cramming. (Shut all four, hit the shore)
Carmangary, Hi. Yes, I would agree the South Carolina barracks or dorms were much nicer than the Orlando, Florida barracks and the Ft. Eustis Army Base Barracks.
Good luck. Work your ass off while you are there. I'm glad I did, I am working at a Civilian plant now making 80k/yr to start, and only did 6yrs in the navy.
I wish that I had all the electrical, fluid flow, heat transfer, and thermodynamics equations.I need to review them especially now that I'm doing more design work. The only thing missing at Nuke school vs. university engineering school is the use of design software for modeling & drawings.
Hi SoydePinas, Visit the Excelsior University or College website and you will find the majors B.S. Nuclear Engineering and A.S. in Nuclear Engineering Technology. There you will find the college bookstore and the associated books that contain what you seek. Lucky for me, I took Drafting before I graduated Don Lugo High School. They used Autocad software worth $20k or above. lol... Solving problems using electrical or heat transfer equations are cool.
Suggestions for students going through the pipeline now.You should study hard, learn, and remember especially heat transfer, fluid flow, thermodynamics, electrical, & chemistry equations since you'll most likely come across it again when you leave the Navy.
YoSoydePinas, I agree... It's easier to memorize all the units of measurement until it's like the 123's and ABC's. Only then you'll be able to run through all the problem solving within a decent amount of time.
Blainedwayne, Hi. "Blainedwayne go mad hatter..." your "grain of salt" comment sounds like a cliche. Cliches don't really mean anything. I agree it's a good program, but what do you mean about the ability to "...handle it?" I found the video on the Bupers or Personnel website. I'd describe it as a video that helps friends, immediate family, and acquaintances picture or see the setting. Great imagery... I tell you... lmao!
bwahaha power school make blainedwayne go mad hatter bitches...it is a really good program if you can handle it. Just take this video with a grain of salt people...
Mnrhyre, You sound like your doing some kind of Sociology homework. The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer, and they usually have a category to rate people on the Enlisted Performance Evaluation sheet called Human Relations, Including Equal Opportunity. I'll just call it "Prevent" for NCO's. I have read about affirmative action, quotas, and all that, but the U.S. Navy's schools are based on test scores. The video is neat.
Ahem..this will sound aweful but.. Did the 3 african americans shown here out of 7 peeps (as if it is balanced between races) graduate Nuclear Power School? Did they then make it through prototype training? Out of my class of 93' we had 383 peeps. Less than 15 were non-white. Not 1 black person got through out of the 5 or so that started. The Navy is jumping through its own ass to try and make the recruit vids "Inclusive". Cobalt 60 is a bitch. Stay strong in demanding competence.
your a strraight dickhead first of all i'm Black and i'm in the program and iam doing fine. Second you went into the program when there were only very few Blacks in it at all. There how can you assess the capability of Blacks in the program based off of 5 people. Also there are Black people now who are doing well and getting through the propgram. You talk about competence as if we need a fucking hand out from your punk asses like yourself. what about the historical racist past of the navy.
Order of Chaos, Hi. Thanks. I'm flattered I'm called a straight dickhead. The Navy Nuclear Power Program is equal opportunity. To be accepted into the program, you must meet certain qualifications which mean merit. Your race does not play a factor in admission into the program. Merit is based on a number of factors like knowledge, ability, athletic capability and so on. An example, you need to be a high school graduate. U.S. History is a core class... lol
yah! congratulations on receiving the finest education that the navy has to offer. Just so you know, your "ACE recommended credits" only count at SOC colleges, all of which do not have CEEC credentials haha. I.E. congrats on 130 worthless credits hahahaha
Hi Large1945, I agree. The SMART transcript is backed by A.C.E. I've never heard of CEEC. What does the acronym stand for? lol... Star Re-Enlist is some representative change, but there's no real difference between the qualifications of an E-5 and an E-4 in the same rate or N.E.C.. Take a look at your BMR, PO4 & PO5 quals, and buy the American Council on Education guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Forces. Good Luck
Large1945: Completely untrue! I transferred 132 credit hours out of my time in the Nuclear Navy. 24 of it was CLEP tests (I highly recommend taking them!) and I finished my BA in management - a completely unrelated field - in only 14 months.

YoSoydePinas, Hi. I'd like my first professional degree someday, but I'm not there yet. There's all this classifications for higher education such as professional, white collar, and highly skilled. The American Council on Education has a book you can buy for the glossary words that describe the types of degrees awarded after achieving a certain amount of semester hours or units like A.S, B.S, M.S., Post Doctoral, and things like that.
Sdubz, Hello. I take it you didn't graduate? Am I right? lol. Are you on some extended or large amount of extra hours? Are you talking slang? If not, then your talking like a criminal about to commit a felony because blowing things up are considered crimes. Good Luck with the rest of your career if you decided to remain in the U.S. Navy. If you talk to your section advisor they can possibly advise you to change your rating.
Seebackcover, Happy 4th of July... If you've read your Basic Military Requirements (BMR) book then you should be maximizing liberty. As for you rating change question, have you heard of vocabulary or key term definitions like Section Advisor, Bupers, Educational Service Officer and whatever else? Take a look at your BMR. Good Luck.
Wow, this was a lame ass video. I forgot how much we are lied to when we want to join the Navy. I think this video needs to be taken off. It means a lot more when you are in bootcamp. You think these things might be true... but they are not.
MMC(SW) Rhyne - MM"A" School class 9221A, NNPS/Prototype class 9206 (Meaning I attended in 1992). I did A school and power school in Orlando, then prototype in Charleston, SC. I then got the chance to go back and was one of the instructors there when we moved it to SC. The video is accurate as far as facilities go, but don't be fooled. It's tough for most people and there is still no better place to learn the basics of nuclear power.
I went through Orlando in the mid nineties so I can't say what it is now but I thought college was a lot harder than power school. Heres Power School: Instructor writes it on board, you write down in your notebook, and you write it down exactly on the test. Understanding-No. Memorize key words and tricky phrases-Yes. Some people struggled with it studying 50 hrs/wk and some people breezed through it. I partied a lot and still got a 3.9 so don't believe all the hype. It depends on the person.
Sunday, April 13, 2008, Hi. I don't know what Moojism is but "spreading His Message" sounds like you could be a preacher. I always thought the U.S. Navy was part of the U.S. Government which means there is something called Freedom of Religion where through the establishment clause there is a seperation between church and state. lol. I appreciate the comments. Good Luck and if you need advice, I'd recommend speaking with your Section Advisor.
I was in orlando's program and got through. If anyone thinks this place is a picnic, forget it unless they watered it down. I was in the program in 1990, and it looks nice in SC, but don't be fooled, expect 25-40 hrs a week to study and just as a wakeup call, when I was in 13 of us joined in Chicago to do nuke, I only made it, I was an EM. Spent 9yrs in, got my BS in NY where I was a protoype instructor, it's a good program but expect to live at the school to make it. Good luck with it!
Yeah, it's more of a pump. I went through EM A school and failed 3 exams. Went through Power school and failed 3 exams. From what I heard from the instructors I wouldn't have made it through the program if I went through in their day. But, it is still pretty hard.
Freshie415, Hi. My answer to your earlier question is as follows. High School graduates who want to earn money in the Engineering, Engineering Technology and Power Plant Operator Field attend U.S. Navy Nuclear Field 'A' School. Yes, direct current has many applications, but alternating current is so much more efficient.
I am a class 8803-MM grad. I attended "A" school and Nuclear Power School in Orlando, then went to prototype in New York. I was stationed in Norfolk for 4 1/2 years on a 637 class submarine. It was a very tough journey. I'm glad to be done with it, but I'll never forget the experience. I currently am employed in a civilian power plant, and certainly owe the Navy for the training that lead me to this very lucrative job. So...hang in there Squids!!
Slyfoxzz, Hello. Tell your son congratulations on Pass and Review at NTC Great Lakes in Chicago, Illinois. There's alot to do in South Carolina, but I thought Orlando, Florida had more places to go that were closer to my age at the time I went there. Advise your son the section advisors are a great source of information and good luck.
Thank you. I am very proud of my son. He just turned 18 and graduated from Great Lakes 3 days ago. He is a happy sailor and looking forward to his adventures in the Navy.
I'm an MM nuke. I'm stationed on a aircraft carrier that is currently in the shipyards in Virginia. I'm about to get out soon. I know the surface machinist mate side of the house and got an insight to what sub life is like from a co-worker. If there are any questions about the nuclear power program, I will answer them honestly.
hi there, i have enlisted in the Navy and have been given the offer to become a navy nuke. is there a more appropriate means to contact you with much more elaborate questions than through the limiting factors of communicating through youtube comments?
Acqua206, Hello. Torture? Were you on 30 plus study hours from Naval Nuclear Field A school and on through Nuclear Power School while you were in the Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline? Yeah, that could be torture if you didn't go out and do anything fun. The subjects taught in at Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline were similiar subjects I had already taken in K-12,so I was interested in the topics.
I don't think that I was in hours in A school. I was on 15-2's in Power School though..which is nothing because homework took a lot more time than that anyways.
I didn't find anything interesting, especially Reactor Principles...whew that was utter torture.
The fleet was a mixed bag. It sucked like hell..I'm SS so I think I had it a little tougher than most you SW folks. However, a couple years down the road, I find myself remembering only the good times. Met a good bunch of folks on the HGR.
Acqua206, Hi. I was in class 9820-M in NNPTC Orlando, Florida, but I ended up getting appendicitis, so my section advisor moved me back to class 9823-M. Nuclear Field A School was fun, and I wasn't on hours, but Nuclear Power School in NNPTC South Carolina took more time. I chose Naval Nuclear Power Prototype in Charleston SC instead of New York after I graduated. The State Newspaper wrote an article about our 9807-E class.
MM2(SW) R.E. Stutz Class 8407 Orlando, Hi. Thanks for the compliment. I was in class 9820-M and 9823-M when I attended the Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline at Naval Nuclear Power Training Center Orlando, Florida. According to the Chino Valley Unified School District SAT, API, and STAR results for 1997, I placed in the top 15 to 10% on the SAT I verbal with a 570-600 score since the average was around around 500 or under.

Lleal67, Hi. I read the Princeton Reviews "Paying for College Without Going Broke," and it definitely narrates a big difference between "gettin paid to be a student instead of paying to be a student." It's a great read for those who chose the quota based NCF instead of the signing bonus before joining the Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline. I remember "LDO" stood for Limited Duty Officer. Has it changed?
Hello. I think all three phases in the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Pipeline are challenging. I think U.S. Navy Prototype is more challenging in the area of independent thinking and personal motivation; therefore, I think it builds accountability and responsibility in a person's character more than the first two phases in the Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline. That's alot isn't it? lol. Good Luck.
I was a Reactor Operator, ETA School was easiest, NNPS was very challenging (but all book work and you live on base, cafeteria, etc.)....Prototype was the hardest by far!
The happiest day of my life was passing final board (in the 80's).
Hi. You have to specify which area it's more challenging in, because the theory, principles, and concepts are the same in the last two phases of the Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline. Yes, I would agree that in all that Prototype is more challenging.
Wow, watching that now after having been almost all the way through it really brings out the serious amount of propaganda in this clip. They glorify this place so much. Also, nearly everyone in the clip was in A-school.
Well, I didnt really like A-school because you dont have much freedom. Power school wasnt too bad. I was on voluntary hours most of the time. Prototype just plain sucked. 12 on 12 off gets old quick
neufomatic, Nuclear Field "A" School was fun for me. I remember we had to wait a few weeks before we could get a "Civies" chit to wear our civilian clothes on and off base long ago when I was at the Orlando, Florida NNPTC. There was alot to do in Orlando. What week did you graduate Nuclear Prototype? Did you go to Charleston or New York?
we had a dot system in A-school. you got a green dot sticker put on your badge after being there 1 month to be able to wear civilian clothes on the weekend i think and a blue dot sticker after being there 2 months to be able to wear civilian clothes after work durring the week. our class got in trouble a lot and they kept removing our dots. i went to nptu in charleston
neufomatic, Interesting. That's new. I remember being given chits or something like that signed by the section advisor. Cool. I went to NPTU Charleston, S.C. too. Were you on the MTS-635 or MTS-626? Are they still using point counts at prototype? When did you graduate from prototype? Have you visited the college board website and read up on the MCAT test?
they made it seem like this was one of the coolest places in the world. lol. i remember yellow, green, and blue badges dictating the level of freedom a person had. when i didn't understand what was going on, my A school advisor told me, my job was to just be a sponge and take in whatever i can. i didn't understand much in A school, but power school made more sense for some reason. 0106.
Hi. I went to Nuclear Field "A" School at NNPTC Orlando, Florida. The rules then were no civilian clothes until class started and a few tests have passed. I remember the badges. Do people still have to write "NOFORN," or "Confidential" on their notes? We had to do that for Class 9820-M and 9823-M long ago.
neufomatic, Thanks for the reminder. It's been awhile since I've stamped my notes confidential or noforn. I remember during Power School we had a drill or a scare that some notes weren't shredded before they left the building and ended up in the trash. They had a bunch of people raid the large trash bins for material that could of been possibly classified as confidential. Not fun. Luckily, it wasn't I who had to do that.
I'm glad I went through the pipeline before they moved NNPS. I was at Orlando, FL from Bootcamp, A-school, and Nuke School and then Idaho Falls (Class 8902). Orlando was great, especiall the Church St. Downtown area. Idaho Falls was also okay other than the bus rides to and from INEL.
Big difference when I went through the pipeline (Class 8902). It is more fun looking back than being there, but I did have fun in Orlando & Idaho Falls. USS Mississippi CGN-40.
Pretty good stuff! Better than the old days (8903 here) when you had to PCS move every 6 months for 2 years before even getting to the fleet. Stick it out and finish your training and initial fleet assignment, and there isn't anything else in life you won't be able to handle if you set yourself to it. Keep up the good work sailors!
I remember. I graduated awhile back in 1999 though. I originally attended NNPTC in Orlando, Florida, but they moved it to Charleston, South Carolina. Those PCS moves were fun during the younger years. I had to weigh my car to find out how much money I'd get for the move. It was kind of fun, but I bet it would be a different scenario with a family and older age.
Neat to see what they've done with the place! I was a Shift Engineer on the MTS635 about 15 years ago when there weren't even buildings, now look at it! If nothing else I'm glad to see some common sense took hold and they moved NFAS/NNPS/NPTU to the same spot. Imagine in the old days every couple of weeks several hundred graduating students doing PCS moves to NY/CT/ID and then doing it all over again in 6 months.
Damn, that is alot. 5 extra hours of study a night is alot. It'll make a difference though when your studying for BNEQ. Have you heard of Excelsior College yet? If not, search for it on yahoo. Those five extra hours is like studying for college credit. Study hours should be voluntary though. If someone doesn't like to study then they shouldn't be there. lmao on your "I enjoy studying" comment. Happy Holidays and Good Luck.
I remember seeing this in boot camp and it sounded so damn good! At least better than RTC. It's hardcore here. Long school days and mandatory study after class. Only place in the Navy where the exams AREN'T multible choice. You have to know the stuff.
The video's a few years old but it's all still pretty much the same.
i remember seeing this video in boot camp and was like WOW! but then i got there and i hate the living shit out of that building. that place sux and so does the town where its lcoated.
Charleston, South Carolina's got some fun places downtown. I went to NNPTC Orlando, Florida for Nuclear Field A School, and it was definitely WOW in downtown Orlando. Single females everywhere especially during the summer.
Oh the memories. Class 9201 in Orland here. I went to Prototype in NY D1G. This video is what is expected from recruiting.

It's tough for most people and there is still no better place to learn the basics of nuclear power.
rhyne02 3 years ago 2
I went through Orlando in the mid nineties so I can't say what it is now but I thought college was a lot harder than power school. Heres Power School: Instructor writes it on board, you write down in your notebook, and you write it down exactly on the test. Understanding-No. Memorize key words and tricky phrases-Yes. Some people struggled with it studying 50 hrs/wk and some people breezed through it. I partied a lot and still got a 3.9 so don't believe all the hype. It depends on the person.

Hey, this sounds pretty good. If I wasn't already committed to a life of Moojism and helping to spread His message I'd do this!

Good luck with it!
ricks66gs 4 years ago

There's alot to do in South Carolina, but I thought Orlando, Florida had more places to go that were closer to my age at the time I went there. Thank you. I am very proud of my son. He just turned 18 and graduated from Great Lakes 3 days ago. He is a happy sailor and looking forward to his adventures in the Navy.

Congratulations to him.
What rate is he going to be? MM, EM, or ET nuke?
I'm an MM nuke. I'm stationed on a aircraft carrier that is currently in the shipyards in Virginia. I'm about to get out soon. I know the surface machinist mate side of the house and got an insight to what sub life is like from a co-worker. If there are any questions about the nuclear power program, I will answer them honestly.

That brings back a lot of memories. I have to agree that although I hated NNPTC (USS Nimitz sucked worse though), I did meet some good people.
Problem was I lost touch with most of them after prototype.

Just curious, are the Officer LDO instructors, like then Ensigns in the video still called that very inappropriate nick name?

Lleal67, Hi. I read the Princeton Reviews "Paying for College Without Going Broke," and it definitely narrates a big difference between "gettin paid to be a student instead of paying to be a student." It's a great read for those who chose the quota based NCF instead of the signing bonus before joining the Naval Nuclear Power Pipeline. I remember "LDO" stood for Limited Duty Officer. Has it changed?

UnderseaCaveman,

Yes, I would agree that in all that Prototype is more challenging.

neufomatic, Nuclear Field "A" School was fun for me.

Cool. I went to NPTU Charleston, S.C. too. Were you on the MTS-635 or MTS-626? they made it seem like this was one of the coolest places in the world. lol. i remember yellow, green, and blue badges dictating the level of freedom a person had. when i didn't understand what was going on, my A school advisor told me, my job was to just be a sponge and take in whatever i can. i didn't understand much in A school, but power school made more sense for some reason. 0106.
khmerknight 4 years ago
Jobeld79 4 years ago
we stamped all A-school notes with noforn and all powerschool and prototype notes with confidential
neufomatic 4 years ago
Monday, January 21, 2008
neufomatic, Thanks for the reminder.

YoSoydePinas 4 years ago
Big difference when I went through the pipeline (Class 8902). It is more fun looking back than being there, but I did have fun in Orlando & Idaho Falls. USS Mississippi CGN-40.
YoSoydePinas 4 years ago
Pretty good stuff! Better than the old days (8903 here) when you had to PCS move every 6 months for 2 years before even getting to the fleet. Stick it out and finish your training and initial fleet assignment, and there isn't anything else in life you won't be able to handle if you set yourself to it. Keep up the good work sailors!
wagneth 4 years ago
Jobeld79 4 years ago
Neat to see what they've done with the place! I was a Shift Engineer on the MTS635 about 15 years ago when there weren't even buildings, now look at it! If nothing else I'm glad to see some common sense took hold and they moved NFAS/NNPS/NPTU to the same spot. Imagine in the old days every couple of weeks several hundred graduating students doing PCS moves to NY/CT/ID and then doing it all over again in 6 months.

lleu86 4 years ago
Damn, that is alot. 5 extra hours of study a night is alot. It'll make a difference though when your studying for BNEQ. Have you heard of Excelsior College yet? If not, search for it on yahoo. Those five extra hours is like studying for college credit. Study hours should be voluntary though. If someone doesn't like to study then they shouldn't be there. lmao on your "I enjoy studying" comment. Happy Holidays and Good Luck.
