Did you know an artist named Thomas Dolby, that's right, of "She Blinded Me With Science" fame, wrote a song called "Close But No Cigar" that has a chorus that sounds Strikingly Similar to the chorus of this ad ?
It may be a Chicken and Egg scenario, but I believe Dolby had it first...?
@phawkins71 Only the "Close but no cigar" line vagely resembles it. I have noticed that jingle writers very often get their inspiration from other songs. But I doubt the writer of this jingle was inspired by Dolby's song. If I'm correct, "Close but no cigar" was released in 1992, while Gillette already used this jingle in the late 80s.
Hands down.. best commercial and ad Song of ALL TIME!!! This was when commercials and TV cared about what children and families were seeing. It showed what Real Men were supposed to be( strong, kind and confident!) and the beauty of life when taking care of responsibilities and having pride in your self and appearance no matter who you are. So beautiful and Timeless!!
I cant take it Dammit! This song makes me teary i remember being a kid and being enchanted by this commercial. I love this damn Song !!what the hell happened to the 80's and EARLY 90's!!!! PLease GOD Bring Them Back !!!!! This song makes me feel like i can do anything!, and its about a damn RAZOR.!!! Thats what a damn commercial is supposed to be !!!! I miss the 80's & 90's so much!!
This song has been in my head all my life. At 28 years old I decided to look it up on You Tube! A shaving commercial with so much power haha! It always sounds great!
Is it just nostalgia (because I`m getting older) or have advertising companies stopped making people try to buy things?.Shit like this worked!.Now they're trying to be all clever and the economy has ground to a fuckin halt!.Take a leaf out of this, nobheads!.I'll bet you've never shifted so many razors.Thanx 4 posting.Brought back some real memeories man!.
I wish they would have these types of commercials instead we get that stupid bitch! fron the coles add "down down prices are down " i wish she would go down on me least keep that mouth shut ....
Of all the stuff on TV that I've seen in my 29 yrs, This is the only one that made me feel like a badass. This song has been in my head for 20+/- yrs! That laser is sick too! Gillette 'til I die and for generations to come!
This was the song that me saddened because it bring back the memories the very day that year when my brother has schizophrenia. He's doing better on medication right now.
Notice the "Top Gun" electric guitar playing in the background, that was pretty standard in many commercials and probably movies of the day. Speaking of which reminds me of an "Be all that you can be" Army commercial circa this Gillette commercial back then. In the movie Boyz in the Hood there is scene where the Army commercial I am speaking of is shown for a brief moment playing in the background on a TV in that movie.
They don't make commercials like these anymore. A real Mans' commercial, very compelling, makes you wanna just get up and buy Gillette brand named razors & accessories. Still, I'm not giving up my straight edge razor, nothing like shaving with a straight edge I tell ya.
I could never quite get the original tune to this Gillette commercial out of my head over the last 20 years since I first heard it back in 1989 when I was 9 years old. Brings back a lot of good memories.
The 80's was such a magical time, music films cartoons and even there adverts were such deep quality, this is probably my favourite advert,so positive and true, be the best u can be!
Back in the day, commercials had emotions, AWESOME music, even a cool Story - Line. Nowadays, commercials are mostly facile, with bad music, no story, but lots of senseless CGI-Animation.
I feel for you, and for your brother. That is a harsh, devastating illness. I hope he is doing better now. Commercials like this remind me of men at our very best. May part of being our best include finding wholesome, humane cures for mental illnesses like schizophrenia. We can tap into that powerful, good, life-affirming masculine energy and do that. Best wishes to you and your brother for peace and good health.
This commercial makes me feel like a failure because of my beard

Unglaublich, glatte Rasur mit nur 2 Klingen, heute geht das natürlich nicht mehr.
Man braucht schon mindestens 4 Klingen! Wahnsinn, was ein Fortschritt.
Den Preis von damals braucht man natürlich mit heute auch nicht zu vergleichen.
Selbes Ergebnis, dafür aber 10 mal so teuer wie damals :>
