I really love the fact that after all Laura went through in her life, even the self inflicted wounds, the good was still in her and God accepted her. This part of the movie always moves me.

I loved the tv show but this movie was wonderfully boring and stupid. We didn't need prequel. No wonder it was a big Flop in the box office.. Even phenomenally brilliant Sheryl Lee's acting couldn't save this movie. And why the hell they ignored Sherilyn Fenn here? She was the most beautiful, charming and mysterious character in Twin Peaks.
@Magnolia296 I Disagree. I thought the movie was fucking amazing and depressing as hell. You may have not needed the prequel, but I'm glad to have it. It's a great tragic tale. It's also somewhat of a sequel too. Finally seeing Laura being forgiven for all her sins.
It was a big "flop" because it was a lot more of a David Lynch style film. That and the Twin Peaks fever fizzed out at the time.
Also, Sherilyn Fenn didn't star in it because she didn't like where the 2nd season went.
Lets try this again without the massive spelling errors:
I cry every single time I watch this scene.
Through the whole movie Sheryl just acts so well, letting the smiling façade slip from time to time to reveal the heartbroken and exhausted person Laura really is. I BELIEVE it the way Sheryl acts it, all the pain and the hopelessness. And then this!
Then this perfect happiness that it's over and she's finally safe from it all, and I just cry.
I'm so glad this movie is finally being appreciated today and I applaude Lynch for having the courage to follow his muse. Movies can be made for people, places or events, but rarely do people make them for a character. The movie is for Laura Palmer, plain and simple.
Christ this is beautiful. the kind of compassion it shows for a subject is earth shattering. And the kind of compassion it engenders in viewers is as much if not more so. It's funny that Lynch uses fear as a gateway to compassion. This is our greatest form of modern tragedy.
As with any of David Lynch's art, it can be viewed in a myriad of ways, but personally I never felt either White or Black Lodge was seen- just "limbo" (the waiting room)- Bob, Mike's Arm (Little Man) and the Giant were sprits trapped in the waiting room that fed on fear, pain and suffering. The ending shows that Cooper (the real Cooper) was trapped there too, and that he was able to show Laura that good existed still through the image of the angel. Just my take.
My understanding of the finale of this film was that Laura passed through the Black Lodge and into Heaven (The White Lodge). On a second viewing of the TP series and the film, in order, I viewed it as the Cooper that is trapped in the Black Lodge, using his love (which is one way to enter the White Lodge) and compassion to allow Laura into the White Lodge.
Nonetheless, this is one of the most beautiful endings to a film imaginable. Truly, TP:FWWM is his masterpiece!
This is something that periodically emerges in Lynch`s movies. He puts his audience through Hell, before finally offering them a glimpse of Heaven - which is exactly what makes the endings of his films so cathartic.
It`s a shame that similar filmmakers, such as the Coen Brothers, seem to have been consumed by gloom altogether and only believe in Pure Evil without acknowledging the possibility that Pure Good can exist as well.
@sophomorictrash Well the Coens are nihilists, so they end everything in Nihilism. Polanski is the darkest, making films that end in no hope whatsoever, but after going through the Holocaust and having his wife and friends murdered by the Manson family, can you really blame him? But, I think Blue Velvet would have been more poignant to end in a Polanski note, rather than the mockingly/jokingly sickly sweet tone.
Agent Cooper is there because he is her protector. A father figure substitute who loves her in a way that her abusive father never did. She has ultimate protection in the physical world as well as the divine world.
Yes, I see that now. He is a kind of guardian, I think, giving her assurance that it's ok to pass over. Does that make sense? Thinking about it, in a sense, Agent Cooper could be regarded as an Angelic presence - not really of this world, but an agent if intervention for good.
@zark78 There is no passage of time in the Lodge. Because Agent Cooper enters and stays in the Lodge much later in the temporal scheme of things, he can still be there to greet Laura.
Pff, David, I beg you place make some more movies. Nobody does it better then you do. Best filmmusic ever made is by Badalamenti, btw. Titlesong of this film is best piecce of music i ever heard
Agreed. The world is ready for another David Lynch film. I just checked the IMDb, and it doesn't look good. He's executive producing a few projects, but that's about it.

I would of prefer'd a bright light then the choice of angel in this scene to really do justice to the emotion she is giving off.

This is just my understanding,
but is Cooper there because his soul will eventually reside in the White and Black lodges?
As the lodges are a place outside space and time, his spirit has always been there, even before the first season of the show
