I love caviar, but caviar on our table is not a frequent visitor, as the caviar of salmon. It is quite expensive and there are doubts about the freshness of the product if you buy in a city store. If you want to eat the freshest caviar, go fishing! And do not forget to bring with you a bottle of cold SWEET champagne and sweet girls;)))
@TheLeohaupt - Russian food is NOT the best by ANY stretch of the imagination. It is VERY simple, mostly VERY cheap, and usually POORLY prepared because there hasn't been ANY food culture in Russia (except among the aristocracy) EVER. By the way, I've lived in Russia for several years now as the executive chef of a large restaurant that is trying to bring fine dining to Russians - truly an uphill battle, as all they want is "extremely well done" steaks and cheap sausage.
@KostjaMRH - If you prefer Russian food, then you like bland, overcooked and things slathered with fat (butter, mayonnaise, and sour cream). I've been in Saint Petersburg for many years now, as I said. Things are now finally changing slowly, but only for younger people. Old Russians still want their cheap sausage and plain meat that's burnt black.
@KostjaMRH - I am speaking in terms of the average Russian. I've been the head chef at three restaurants here. I think I know what I'm talking about. Your mother may be an exceptional cook, but that has nothing to do with the average Russian.
@MrPlanx It is still wrong to generalise it like that. An average pizza in the world is quite bad (because a lot of them are take-aways), but that does not make pizza bad in general. :)
im from kazakhstan, i remember in the early 90's when i was a little kid my uncle had a whole freaking jar of osetra caviar... he used to eat that shit with a tablespoon. or chuck thick layers of it onto bread and butter and munch it down.
i tasted it and i thought it was gross, but i was like a 5 or 6 year old kid.
now im 24 and i genuinely want to try that stuff because i am a bit of a food connoisseur, but i cant fucking afford it now, like $100 for a little can. FML i want caviar now!!!!
I can eat caviar out of the jar with a spoon. Its delicious, and has nothing to do with being fancy. Even better spread it on buttered borodinsky bread. Heaven.
@RyanLikesAmp - salty, but also kind of creamy...its not possible to really describe the taste with words. The best answer is that it tastes like caviar. Lol. If you want the best, youve got to try Beluga caviar. Its the most expensive but it tastes awesome.
Caviar tastes like complete shit. When people brag about it, its because they basically had a pamperd life, or if they didnt, they lie. The only thing good about caviar is that it could be thrown out! Canned tuna should be priced higher!
Ive had the lucky experiance of trying black or rather GREEN caviar with the tiny eggs once in my life :(, but the orange caviar is delisssh! I MISS IT SO MUCH
st petersburg is one of the most common places were russian skinheads are located im russian by the way it whould be funny if he was black WATS POPPING READY TO EAT SOME CAVIER..........
Maybe I'm weird.. but I cannot stand the taste of caviar... Being Japanse, I've been brought up on alot of raw fishy parts passed off as food, but for me all fish eggs make me gag.
black caviar is an acquired taste. I've been eating it through all my childhood before it became outrageously expensive, and I absolutely adore it - but would never eat it like this guy - piece of fresh bread and butter with a thin layer of caviar - the combination is to die for :))
I wonder if the beef stroganoff is really as good as as he says. Russian food looks interesting. it doesn't look very spicy though. most European food isn't.
I've had that tasting plate from that hotel. That effing caviar tasted like shit. Not worth the money I spent, caviar is effing gross, rich snobs can have that shit, it's gross.
Caviar has been regarded as one of the most appreciated delicacy through the centuries. It is nowadays even more special because of it's rareness. I will say that he did a better job than Anthony Bourdain did in Saint Petersburg. Also, the city is in the midst of a culinary change that is just starting to surface. Things are changing very rapidly these days.
I can't say Bourdain is always boring, but he is extremely self-indulgent. WHEN he's good, he's very good, but that's only about 5% of the time. Both Bourdain and Zimmern's research assistants didn't do a good job at seeking out what is really interesting in Saint Petersburg. There are some amazing things, but they change FAST, so you have to interface with local experts - and that means starting at an expat bar to talk to local residents. Bourdain got his info from his wife, from what I heard.
I went to st pete....i had the baluga and the honest truth?....it wasnt worth it....far too expensive and unbelievably dissapointing....

@MrPlanx I would not say that there is such thing as "best food". It is up to a person to decide what they like best.

Why the hell was he using METAL utensils to eat that caviar? More importantly, why were they SERVING it with metal?
You use bone, wood, or mother of pearly to serve and eat caviar, NOTHING else.
Metal reacts with the eggs, and changes the flavor.

Caviar has been regarded as one of the most appreciated delicacy through the centuries. It is nowadays even more special because of it's rareness. There are different kind of caviar from different sturgeon varieties almost in every continent of the world. The market price for those we serve is extremely high. This is a matter of taste and likings, most of our customers find that rare delicacy worth tasting and they are more than willing to pay for that gastronomical experience.
