Sleepy Sleepers - Sally Is Something Else (1982) HQ
I LOVE the music. Using accordians really adds to it ! Polka Rock?? But the one thing I just love, is in watching them having so much FUN amongst themselves! I get so tired of Rock bands just stand there and try to look too cool. These guys are such a hoot !
And these guys are actually from Finland? YOU ROCK! Solzhenitsyn probably would not approve. Stalin....hell, he'd probably have the whole ensemble packed off in the middle of the night and shot in the head in the basement of the Lubyanka...
How can anyone who is of clear mind transfer "Gimme all your lovin" into a Polka and add the "Russian anthem" into the breaks??? Only a real genius!!!!!!!!!
C'mon, this is the only band in the world that has been able (or even tried) to get the Red Army Military Choir to join with them for some shows. I think that we all should do more rockin' and less fighting.
Well, 20 years before this, the song didn't exist, heh. And even if it had, they probably would not have heard of it....it's a Military Orchestra, after all.
Don't know when this was recorded, but I was THERE in summer 92 or 93 when they appeared in the square with the Red Army Choir. I worked with Osuuspanki in HKI. That was a crazy night!
The Total Balalaika Show was June of 1993--by the next show, sponsored by Nokia, the entire Red Army Choir switched to all-brown transitional uniforms. They were still performing with the Leningrad Cowboys though.
@gardenald Yep, I'm wondering if the tractor is a part of the rhythm section @ :25... Then at 1:22 the drummer is silent, and you can hear the engine running...pretty cool.
25 years ago, the Gulag system had been closed for 20 years.
In any case, they probably wouldn't have sung western songs in the 70s--just like American bands wouldn't sing Russian songs in the 70s. Now, the 80s are different.
Some members of this finnish band were members of band called Sleepy Sleepers in 1970's. In many finnish towns there gigs were abandoned cause "low moral", "outrage behavior", "sexuality" (maskpenis in nose) and for "political reasons". Especially leftwing of socialist party hated them.
The Red Army Choir was popular enough in their own country and overseas to survive the collapse of the USSR--they were still a strong force in the CIS, just because of their own popularity.
Now, whether they would have been as popular overseas without the Cowboys is a different story.
I don't think they ever performed together elsewhere but in Finland and Germany. The band just couldn't afford it. Nowadays I'd assume that Russia would not let their military band (The Russian Red Army Choir) to be "exploited" in that way anyway.
They actually perform annually in Australia with the Leningrad Cowboys. Keep in mind, the band isn't an independent corporation or body, it's still party of the Russian Ministry of Defense, though in the case of Australia, they're probably paid pretty well by the television network that hosts the variety show.
HAHAHAHA OHHHHHH MY GOD!!!!!! I have never heard of or ever seen these guys!!!! They are great!!!!!! I love it!!!!! Kind of like a new and improved version of Oingo Boingo
