I find it funny and sad @ the same time when people listening to NIN are saying things like: - just stfu about religion etc (worlds problems)and just listen to NIN's music" - what a paradox.
Oh, come on, guys. Trent is attacking the fundementalist loonies, he's said himself that he does believe in some kind of God, I can bring up the interview if necessary, seriously, stop fighting about religion on the videos of every song that deals with it in any way.

O1Kore you rock, and yeah I think, for myself, that's what makes NIN and other music I listen to so excellent, the lyrics. Rez has always had intense and rich lyrics, full of meaning and insight; he has asked us to question ourselves, our world and relationships we have with each since the forming of NIN. (contued)
I agree the root of all EVIL is religion,,,,,I just can't understand why you people are not listening to the WORDS of his music,,,if you just listen you will eventually figure it out,,it's not that big of a MYSTERY....FUCK it is right out there in the open, just LISTEN,time is running out.
You're right. Why should we blindly follow what some guy in a robe says when there are plenty of rock star opinions we can blindly follow? I mean, with war-mongers like Martin Luthor King, Jr., Mother Theresa, Ghandi, and the nefarious Dalai Lama scattered throughout history, who knows what kinds of evil will be unleashed with those atomic weapons those god-hating scientists made?
yeah man i totally agree with you, i feel this song really lacks the great writing or at least better than average writing that trent usually gives us. I mean, i picture him shaking his head, having a swivel in his step, jazz handing it and then starts discoing with like a bunch of normal people. A riot squad tries to stop them during first chorus, then with "step into the light" the riot squad shows them how its done and breakdances. Then its a barrage of disco vs breakdanc.
I love NIN - it's my favourite, and Trent Reznor rules, but seriously... "C'mon, sing along! Everybody now!" - what's up with that? It sounds like some kind of Christina Aguilera lyric, and all i can imagine while listening to that is Reznor walking down the ruined street, singing this lyric, and all people joinig him and starting to dance like on Michael Jakson's video xD Sorry, i didn't meant to offend anyone. I repeat: I love NIN, but seriously...
Religion is just a drug used to control and blind us all to what we are, because we are just too damn scared to face our own inevitable end. It separates rather than unites us, creates differences and becomes excuses for inexcusable acts of injustices. What's stupid is not being intelligent enough to realize all of the above, Thank you for your time.
can we please not (whether direct or not) post shit saying that someone is wrong because they don't agree with your own personal beliefs...it's ignorant and I'll delete any comment from now on that does just that...
I think this whole album was based around what the world could be like 10 years down the road if things keep going the way they're going. There's a little of everything, Police,Government,a little bout religion, and what it'd be like to live in that world when you oppose the powers that be. This song IMO is about how some religions find themselves to be the "One True Religion" would do nothing to help anyone who weren't exactly like they were, or shared their beliefs. They'd treat them like shit
@Leartiest I think you are thinking of a few of the "major religions" but i know for a fact that Buddhism wouldn't discriminate people who believe otherwise
@Leartiest Exactly. The entire album is based on a "What If?": What if the USA became a totalitarian Christian state? What would it be like? The songs are written as though from the point of view of various characters in the scenario.
Trent Reznor, like myself, is a survivalist. He understands how most christians are going to lay around and die when the apocolypse comes (after Peak Oil) economy begins to collapse. I know 2 hardcore christians who believe the second coming of christ is near and they will be saved (so they're just going to lay down) I'll tell you what, Trent and I and other survivalists are the CHOSEN ones. We will not lay down and die, we'll fight to survive by any means until the end - That is God Given
i said "most" christians, at least the ones I've talked to. Have you heard of The Church of Latter Day Saints - they firmly believe in being prepared. I'm sorry if I insulted you. I have talked to real old-school bible believers who think that they are going to be resurrected after they die when Jesus comes back to earth and the apocolpyse, blah blah. I am glad you won't lie down and die, but I'll tell you what, those who lay down and die will make it just a bit easier for US. Yes, I smoke!
nice statement. however i dont believe the future has anything to do with religion. i dont believe Trent Reznor wanted this album (let alone this song) to have to do with christianity or any religions to that matter. survivalism is like you said "God Given" and i believe you can do that with or without god. Sadly there is no place for religions in the future and peak oil is not going to end the world...i think we are fare away from seeint the end of the world...we have gone through worst.
its great to see that Trent still can create such great music after so many years. other artists from his era - sad to sad say have lost "it" Thank God for Trent
"I would never tell you anything that wasn't absolutely true that hadn't come right from
His mouth and He wants me to tell you" Oh ho ho ho Trent your sense of irony and humor are impeccable! Of course, everyone is a vessel of god. Then, simply out of assumption, they must be telling the truth! LMAO! Christianity is a funny little religion.
Whenever I hear the sounds this guy creates the loops the beats, the way he fits words in it always blows my mind, he is so on the ball he is the most original artist ever! As a songwriter he is up there with Lennon,Bowie,Dylan(when Dylan's on the ball). This guy is doing too music what Da Vinci done to art it's mind blowing! I have no interest in any other modern day band The Nine Inch Nails restore my faith in music anytime I think of giving up. I hear something new he's done and I am inspired
i definitely agree that nin is not an anti-God band. i think trent has a lot of issues with God though. i think trent has a hard time accepting the fact that God is God and only God can do the things He does. just as lucifer had a hard time with it. you know? i think the older trent gets, the closer he becomes to God so to speak. trent is a 40 something year old man now and is just now starting to grow up. i love trent, but i do love the Lord Jesus more. more to come on this. character count.
I agree with you to a point--hatred of God is a sign of immaturity, but that's only because the God belief itself is immature. Hating a nonexistent entity and praising it are about equally childish pursuits. Maturity lies in acknowledging that our species is entirely responsible for itself.
to believe in God is not immature, that makes no sense at all! to say that God is nonexistent is just plain ignorant. you cannot disprove God. it is all about faith. your line about "Maturity" is such b.s. - what a load - i think you just like listening to yourself talk or type
no, you are wrong again, faith is a belief that is not based on tangible evidence. to have faith in someone or something doesn't make it false. it also doesn't mean that one is running from the truth. in my case - i know it to be a fact.
I'm a Christian and I don't think the song attacks Christians, but the fake evil hypocritical Christians. Those who worship things instead of God(I sure wouldn't want to be
Praying to the wrong piece of wood) and other things that the true people of God don't approve of like arrogant Christians
"professor reznor" hihi you makes me laugh ok i must admit that i have a litter problem with the fucking conjuctions but prof.reznor is good teacher:)
tnks Leartiest for your vid!..love ИIИ... i'm not cristian and my throth it's in the "Man", in what he can do for yourself and world 'cause i think that we are all the same thing..
im christian and i find no offense to this song (pretty cool one) but some of the stuff the church believes like homophobia, anti-abortion, no mercy killing, and recruiting you for serving in the church just disgusts me sometimes
I'm a christian and I listen to DrakThrone... So this wasn't gonna shock me. But this is way better than DarkThrone... FUck black metal. PURE INDUSTRIAL!
sorry green~ im just saying hes immense in my world. dont call me a retard because i have an opinion. everyones different and thats the way i see Nin you cant change that. so to be honest you can fuck off~ i never said it was wrong. if youre gonna give me a pep talk about the world i cba to read it lol. i dont spend hours on youtube arguing with little people :S I enjoy music and thats my approach towards it. lol youve kinda contradicted yourself aswell by the way..
Actually this album isn't really about faith or Trent's personal life. This albums is more of a commentary on the state of the world and our country. What he's saying in this song is how as Americans, we feel like we're more special than everybody else. It's got to do with the war, immigration, etc.
Actually, if someone has a different opinion it doesn't make it wrong. I like his music (well his old stuff anyway, this new shit is crap) but if someone doesn't agree it does not mean that they have no creativity. You act like this guy invented the wheel. He makes music you fucking retard, and different people like different shit.
Sounds like the lyrics are bashing Christianity, or perhaps Mormonism exclusively.
Funny how easy it is to make a fake religion that some think is totally unbelievable. Give it a thousand years or so, and this song may become the next Bible with enough endorsement.
i keep wondering dus he meen from the color of your skin meaning us colored people or red like the devil cus he sead step into the light mening satan is in shadow
i think he meant for it to come off as a racist statement, indicating that a very narrow minded, scary hardcore religious group is very prominent/dangerous in this futuristic storyline he has created. Either he is narrating the storyline from the cult's point of view, or he is mocking the cult with an outside perspective in a sarcastic way.
I doubt it, the church of plano was only available because it was under questioning by the government, for mentioning the presence.
I think it's just the church state that the US is at the moment. They have been shown to be racist in discriminating against muslims, and basically foreign people that might be "terrorists".
If you actually followed the secret websites NIN planted about Year Zero, you would know that its a fiction based religion based on the Presence (Hand of God) that comes from a tap water supplement (parepin) used to make us docile.
people, please, do your homework. This album is Trents interpretation of where America will be in 10 years or so. This song is him saying if your not White you in trouble and that they can do it as a god given right to discriminate.
that dosnt suprise me at all mate. Its sad really, if we worked together instead of against each other then we would be alot further with things instead of being stuck in this rutt were all in
not even close...more like a comment towards the "Almighty Elitist" attitude that modern day (and some olden days) Churches have towards people who aren't members
we meet again 240p!

Salvador33HPR 3 years ago 2
I agree with you to a point--hatred of God is a sign of immaturity, but that's only because the God belief itself is immature. Hating a nonexistent entity and praising it are about equally childish pursuits. Maturity lies in acknowledging that our species is entirely responsible for itself.
TentativeNihilist 3 years ago
to believe in God is not immature, that makes no sense at all! to say that God is nonexistent is just plain ignorant. you cannot disprove God. it is all about faith. your line about "Maturity" is such b.s. - what a load - i think you just like listening to yourself talk or type
gmodesike 3 years ago
Faith means not wanting to know what is true.
TentativeNihilist 3 years ago
no, you are wrong again, faith is a belief that is not based on tangible evidence. to have faith in someone or something doesn't make it false. it also doesn't mean that one is running from the truth. in my case - i know it to be a fact.

When you examine Trent Reznor's lyrics, there really is no doubt - the man is a lyrical genius.

I'm a Christian and I don't think the song attacks Christians, but the fake evil hypocritical Christians. Those who worship things instead of God(I sure wouldn't want to be
Praying to the wrong piece of wood) and other things that the true people of God don't approve of like arrogant Christians
Salvador33HPR 3 years ago 6
I would say that it does, with more style then Heresy but without that rebellious feeling of Heresy.
Closer is also a good example, religious/spiritual fulfillment from instinct driven intercourse.
If there is hell, Ill see you there.
Udedenkz 3 years ago
He's just mocking hypocritical religions in general. The Abrahamic set probably applies more than some others, however.

trent is a master when it comes to music.
im christian and i find no offense to this song (pretty cool one) but some of the stuff the church believes like homophobia, anti-abortion, no mercy killing, and recruiting you for serving in the church just disgusts me sometimes

sorry green~ im just saying hes immense in my world. dont call me a retard because i have an opinion. everyones different and thats the way i see Nin you cant change that. so to be honest you can fuck off~ i never said it was wrong. if youre gonna give me a pep talk about the world i cba to read it lol. i dont spend hours on youtube arguing with little people :S I enjoy music and thats my approach towards it. lol youve kinda contradicted yourself aswell by the way..
willmangham 3 years ago
Actually this album isn't really about faith or Trent's personal life. This albums is more of a commentary on the state of the world and our country. What he's saying in this song is how as Americans, we feel like we're more special than everybody else. It's got to do with the war, immigration, etc.
BuckChoklitt 3 years ago
he's a genius. simple as that.
if anyone thinks otherwise then they have no sense of emotion or creativity lol.
willmangham 3 years ago
Actually, if someone has a different opinion it doesn't make it wrong. I like his music (well his old stuff anyway, this new shit is crap) but if someone doesn't agree it does not mean that they have no creativity. You act like this guy invented the wheel. He makes music you fucking retard, and different people like different shit.

Sounds like the lyrics are bashing Christianity, or perhaps Mormonism exclusively.
Funny how easy it is to make a fake religion that some think is totally unbelievable. Give it a thousand years or so, and this song may become the next Bible with enough endorsement.

i keep wondering dus he meen from the color of your skin meaning us colored people or red like the devil cus he sead step into the light mening satan is in shadow
dededebobobo 4 years ago
i think he meant for it to come off as a racist statement, indicating that a very narrow minded, scary hardcore religious group is very prominent/dangerous in this futuristic storyline he has created. Either he is narrating the storyline from the cult's point of view, or he is mocking the cult with an outside perspective in a sarcastic way.
Iancharcoal 4 years ago 3
church of plano? <_<
devineproudmanus123 4 years ago
is that the name of the group? i have not kept very well on the storyline at all
Iancharcoal 4 years ago
I doubt it, the church of plano was only available because it was under questioning by the government, for mentioning the presence.
I think it's just the church state that the US is at the moment. They have been shown to be racist in discriminating against muslims, and basically foreign people that might be "terrorists".
socksy 3 years ago
If you actually followed the secret websites NIN planted about Year Zero, you would know that its a fiction based religion based on the Presence (Hand of God) that comes from a tap water supplement (parepin) used to make us docile.
Salems9 4 years ago
people, please, do your homework. This album is Trents interpretation of where America will be in 10 years or so. This song is him saying if your not White you in trouble and that they can do it as a god given right to discriminate.

wow, this song is a bit racist... sounds like a member of the Kloo Klutz Klan wrote it.

not even close...more like a comment towards the "Almighty Elitist" attitude that modern day (and some olden days) Churches have towards people who aren't members
