lol. When I watched this movie with my girlfriend, this part scared her. lmao. She's not use to seeing a lot of scary movies, & I don't think she's seen too many "Breaking the fourth wall" kinda films either.
Apparently Quentin offered up the Stuntman Mike role to John Travolta, Willem Dafoe, John Malkovich, Micky Rourke, Ron Perlman, Bruce Willis, Kal Penn and Sylvester Stallone, but none were available. But Kurt did a great job.
It's a shame this didn't do better at the boxoffice. I think this film (with a few changes and character enhancements) could have been a stand-alone success.
but I don't think I would have like those other Mike's. Kurt really understood the character. The John Wayne skit, which was is already in the script, ties in to Russell's Jack Berton character. Plus it was all Kurt when Mike bitches up and I love the "what-what- what are you gonna do." classic
I just can't imagine Mickey Rourke, or Ving Rimes doing Stuntman Mike justice, after all he's supposed to be a sexy, charming 50 yr old & they are not, I'm glad they said no.
I liked Kurt's acting, except for a couple of instances when I felt it was just a bit over the top, but I don't think he was the only guy who could have done it, even considering the John Wayne reference (which I don't believe would have been a factor in choosing an actor). Michael Madsen, Harvey Keitel, and others come to mind.
Maybe they could have play the role but their not GOOD LOOKING, and look old. All the other choices don't come off as cowboy stuntman I shocked he didn't think of Kurt 1st. Stuntman Mike is a redneck with that rodeo swagger, 55 with a nice body. I just can't imagine he had Mickey Rourke in mind. I'd like the way fate play the cards but sometimes I do imagine a different Mike but I'd think it would have been a different movie. But I agree others may have added something to the character.
Kurt is "good looking" and doesn't look old? Has a nice body? Your standards are pretty loose...Kurt's a bit long in the tooth himself. He was 56 when they made DP.
In any event, the looks of male actors have never been one QT's big criterion for roles in his films. In fact 'pretty boy' actors generally won't do these kind of films for several reasons including not wanting to play against type.
LOL you know I mean compared to his other choices. Kurt could be a charming old man who looks good for his age and has a scar that makes him look cool rather than grotesque. I didn't think he was hot in Big Trouble in Little China or Overboard, but he has aged well and has charm, so it believable to me he could get a lap dance or a blow job offer (from Pam via script). If I saw Mickey, Ving, or Harvey, I'm not sure I'd believe it, it just be a movie. Kurt makes it realistic. Good point though.
@Zeeboe the line is a reference to John Wayne, even when "Jack Jack Burton" did it in Big Truoble In Little China it was a John Wayne reference. by the way you should notice Rusell actual t-sirt from the movie above Shanna's head, and I never said John Wayne's name was mention it the script, it the whole "in my book" I was referring to.
I was in error to suggest that QT wanted Kal Penn as Stuntman Mike. It IS true he wanted to cast him (in a dfifferent role, probably as Nate), but it's also true he looked to others to play Stuntman Mike before Russell with serious initial consideration being given to Mickey Rourke. Now is it safe to say he tailored he character to Russell when he got signed? Of course.
@Zeeboe don't get me wrong, I think its a fun film and already something of a cult classic, but it's nowhere near as well done as Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction.
@broadjumper1 - Gotta disagree there. :-) I've honestly enjoyed all of his movies, and it's hard to pick a favorite, but Death Proof has a special place in my heart for a lot of reasons, and I think it's very much in the same league as QT's other movies, and Stuntman Mike is QT's greatest character. Just my opinions.
@Zeeboe - Everybody has their own personal favorite and I like the movie as well, but I think the film suffers a bit from not being done as a stand-alone, but then it wouldn't have allowed for the homage to grindhouse style films. I think the film could have been truly great with more focus and character depth.
@broadjumper1 - I think it works well as a stand-alone film. I've introduced it to people before who has never seen or heard of Grindhouse, and they pretty much got the movie. Also, being that it's a grindhouse film, I don't believe it was ever intended to be anything but a fun, entertaining, popcorn movie that pays homage to B-rated 70's drive-in films.
@Zeeboe - I didn't say it doesn't work, just that it could have been better, perhaps even his best work critically as a stand-alone if it received all the attention. I do agree that it his homage to b-rated flicks, but we can't deny that it bombed at the box-office due to public confusion about the movie's subject and a pretty poor zombies flick, with Planet Terror. Just think, a movie called DEATH PROOF on the marquee. I think people would flock to that!
@broadjumper1 - Oh, I agree. I wouldn't trade my Grindhouse watching theater experience for nothing, but I do think that if the film had been a stand-alone movie, it would have at least been number one at the box office the first week.
Couldn't have picked anyone better for this role. It's not everyday you get to see Kurt Russell as the villain either. Especially loved the nacho scene which i think is legendary.
That was a look of I'm gonna kill those bitches.

@Jrcrave - I read the script, and John Wayne is not mentioned. That was Kurt Russell's idea to talk like John Wayne. :-)

@Jrcrave - Oh I know that. I love Kurt Russell's John Wayneish voice in that film, and I have seen that shirt before in Death Proof. Awesome shirt.

Kurt Russell was the best. Thank god he got the role. He was born to play this part.

Yeah, he did a great job, it's sad that the movie did so poorly in the theater, so I don't think it's the one he'll be remembered for.
