@DrStabkill The second resonator on the Veena is made of a gourd. The Sitar's is metallic. The Veena tends to have a softer sound because of it. From what I can gather in my World Music class, the Veena is played in the southern regions of India.
this composition is by thyagaraja. maybe you can listen to other compositions of thyagaraja, oothukadu, muthuswami dikshitar, shyama shastri, purandara dasa, annamacharya. other main composers include mysore vasudevacharya, papanasam sivan, poochi srinivasa, dandapani desikar
this video still makes me happy. i'm so glad it's on here. can we buy her albums in the united states? i wish i had a copy on cd/mp3 to take with me on a walk. it's so joyous. (did india invent drum and bass? har har har)
Mridangist Sri Srinivas has done a great job of accompanying; and so has Sri Subramaniam on the Ghatam. Srinivas's style reminds me of Karaikkudi Sri Mani's style! Sunaadam!
Indian music styles, the most beautiful of the world. PUNYA wonderful

Which raga is this?
hsnse 2 years ago
The ragam of this song is called "Nalinakanthi."
Its arohanam is S G3 R2 M1 P N3 S, and its avarohanam is S N3 P M1 G3 R2 S. It's a janya of the 27th melakartha ragam, "Sarasaangi."
