I just have one thing to say-the Mother series(including Earthbound)is one of the greatest video game series of all time....im speechless...the storytelling is so epic, the music is beautiful(and awesome),and the gameplay is cool....
You know in some really small ways this game can teach some good life lessons like about Friends that reallcare and never giving up and of course the most important in my book Having a good sense of humor
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING Shigesato Itoi IS A GOD In my opinion I know I might sound like I am overreacting or I am a fanboy but anybody who can make an RPG series that I LOOOOOOOOOOVE *and I actually hate RPG's* is a god in my opinion.
You're one of those pursits, right? Bitch please, its a good game, calm down. Although the I wish you luck line does personify the "voice", but other than that, who cares.
Ugh, you're one of them, aren't you? One of those people who won't settle for anything less than the original script because you're an ungrateful bastard who should be thankful this game WAS translated since it's the ONLY Mother game to get released outside of Japan.
Thanks for calling me a bastard. Calling people names does wonders for your argument on the internets. Mother 2 is an SNES game. Most jpn SNES games suffered from hack translations, and Earthbound was no exception. And Mother 2 DESERVES a good translation. If you feel otherwise, please explain.
Umm...sorry. I don't mean to be rude, but Earthbound actually had a very smooth and accurate translation compared to a lot of other games. Naturally it's not exact, and they had to adapt the script to fit an American audience, but that doesn't make it bad.
theduelist675 was being rude, but he did have a point. At least it was published in America at all without all the hassle that's having to be done with Mother 3. And most people are satisfied with the translation anyway.
Hey, I've been reading the differences between the Japanese and the English translation, and so far it sounds like they really did a good job on it. Most of the changes are very understandable and they kept the feeling of the original intact. It's not like they did any super heavy censorship that completely changes the feeling of the game, just little things here and there. So, what are you getting at? I wouldn't call it a "hack translation" in any way at all.
I can see where you're coming from, but I'll have to disagree. It may not be AYBABTU but it's still not good enough by modern standards (unless you're Square-Enix, they have no standards). They called Porky "Pokey" for one thing. It would be understandable if he was an a one-off character, but he's not. He's the main antagonist (kinda hard to miss) and he looks like a pig. That shows poor understanding of jpn phonetics. The text in the video is riddled with funky translations too.
(cont.)If this was a translation screening test, they'd be burned at "the worst person in your neighborhood" for translating 最悪 as the "worst person". A suitable translation for 最悪の隣人 would be something along the lines of "despicable neighbor". A good translator could easily avoid writing about Porky knocking the door twice in a single paragraph too. No sense of economy. There are some other parts that feel really awkward but I don't wanna rant for 10 comments...
The thing is, this coffee sequence happens to be some of the better translated text in the game, and still it has errors. Play through current Nintendo releases and you'd be hard-pressed to find any translation mistakes in an entire game (I know because I've tried to). Mother 2 deserved a stellar translation but was out at the wrong time. I don't think a fresh translation on VC would be too much to ask, they could even charge 200-300 points more if they felt like it. Noone would mind.
I remember hating that coffee... it took too long to read... and sometimes I'd drink the coffee again on accident, and have to go through it all over again.
Well, considering that I was only in the second/first grade when I first started playing it, I probably wouldn't have understood most of the words anyways. xD

I never really thought this scene was trippy. I thought you and Mr Saturn sat down and drank the coffee, and he recapped your adventure for you.

You know, I love the coffee scene so much. It just might be my favorite part of the game!
I always get a fuzzy feeling inside when I get to this part.

If I had some of that coffee it would be someone blaming me for spilling soda on the floor and telling me to clean it up.
By passing through the kitchen and proceeding to the living room carpet.

it's supposed to represent a narrator=like voice, not actually being spoken to by something linear and human... it adds more to it, for me.

I found it interesting that the Japanese version of the coffee scene actually included Kanji. :D
Of course, this means that I have a more difficult time reading it, as I'm a novice.
