DLR is hilarious. A great interview. A rock god with a brain and a sense of humor...hasn't been one of those around since John Lennon or Jim Morrison. I'm feeling a whole new appreciation for the old boy.
Get the feeling he was slightly nervous in the beginning of this interview - maybe am reading too much into it, but that's perhaps why he forgot how to say 'auspicious' or even what word he was thinking of - you know how it's easy to forget words at times, even for someone as intelligent and articulate as him. Anyhows, he was still great!
DDLR/VH made the music that people will be listening to 100 years from now. Say what you will about DD, he knew how to deliver a song. And EVH is simply one of a kind. The two together were magic.
Or how about"why can't this be love?Boy that's a real rocker too. I was blown away by that one.Just rocked so hard. as good as anything roth did.Like DOA or Light up the sky or unchained. yep that van hagar was rockin.Love comes walkin in. was a true rocker aswell(sarcasim)
@smithdsmit So you just totally want to single out what you want to bash. DOA and Light Up the Sky are great, but you can't even compare Unchained and Why Can't This Be Love. Unchained is great when you want a hard rock rush, while Why Can't This be Love is great if you want a song that is a bit more thought out and meaningful. Plus, you would just love Finish What Ya Started if Roth sang it word for word, you just can't accept change.
@jakemk21 when i heard Hagar joined VH I had hoped it would rock.I was open minded to it.I accepted and loved the Dio sabbath.I liked Sammy's work. When I head VH with sammy.I thought it was week and Pop sounding.Sammy is great and Members of vh were great. the songs were week.I wanted to like it. I really did but it just didnt rock enough to be vh
@smithdsmit I find that understandable. For me, I love Hagar-era as much as Roth(hearing Poundcake, and then Eruption followed by Ain't Talkin' Bout Love was what got me into guitar). I just think Hagar wrote some great lyrics along with some great music from Eddie and the gang, even if it did sound like pop sometimes. Anyways, I think our common ground in 2010/2011 is hoping that the new album will be great.
@jakemk21 I hate listening to people argue that this one is better blah blah blah, Its apples and oranges the way I see it. I saw them with Hagar in 04 and with DLR in 07, they both were awesome shows.....I do, however, think that Dave forced Eddie to "play harder" and push himself more. Sammy era VH doesn't get my foot stompin' the way the Runnin With The Devil does when eddie goes into that riff, IMO
As for the next album? I hope Eddie can keep that bottle down long enough to make a good one.
@mase5701 Me too. They're in two different worlds. VH w/Roth and VHw/Hagar are almost two seperate bands that should be analyzed differently. Van Halen was not looking to get a sound-a-like, like what Journey does, but they wanted to move in another direction. It's like saying Velvet Revolver sucks because they don't have Axl Rose. Hey! The guys weren't looking to form Guns n' Roses 2.0 when they formed Revolver.
Dave had alot more to do with the sound of vanhalen then he has ever been given credit for.Listen to VH fairwarning album(81) then DLR eat em and smile (86). they sound alot alike
@smithdsmit Don't you think he may have just taken Van Halen's formula for Fair Warning and applied it to his solo album? I doubt Roth knew how to tell Eddie how his guitar should sound.
@jakemk21 I never said DLR had anything to do with the sound of eddies guitar.I said He had more to do with the sound of vh and the songs then he is given credit for.Look what happened when Dave left VH went to crap.
@smithdsmit Well I think Van Hagar was great, damn good music and lyrics. Sure it wasn't that California party music as much, and Roth's showmanship was gone, but they still had great energy with Hagar live.
@jakemk21 "How Do I Know When It's Love"It's Just Something We feel Together"Puke,Vomit, Yuck.Vh Went from a great rock band. to a pop band.I guess, to each his own
@smithdsmit Ok, so even if you don't like the ballads, you still have songs like Black and Blue, Poundcake, Runaround, The Dream is Over, Top of the World, Seventh Seal, Amsterdam, and a lot of other hard rockers. anyways.....whatever.
I dont think you can look back withouth thinking iin somone Being Crosby and Al Jolson, Little Richard and Ray Charles, Cab Calloway and Fred Astaire and countless others.
Dave, Freddie, and Little Richard however are my favorite because I gre up with them but I can only Imagin what people felt when those other great ones took overe the stage back in the day.
DLR is something else for sure...lol....but I'll tell you what....no matter what you think about his attitude, he is definately a very talented singer and entertainer....I stress that he is a great singer....he knows how to sing....u can't take that away from him.

"AWESPICSISS OCCASION" dumber than stump but entertaining. I saw them live in small venues in the 1970's. They were good back then.
