Great explanation, but isn't it possible as well like this. Let's call the intersectionpoint of the diagonals S. You then put triangle ABS upon BCS to form a rectangle and you can put triangle ASD upon CDS to form another rectangle, laying next to the first. The area of the two rectangles combined is 0.5*AC*BD, so 0.5*d2*d1. That's how we did it, I found it to be a little easier :-) Your way is interesting as well, though, and I think it's better, mathematically!
