There are only like 4, maybe 5 things that can kill a dalek, (a nuke is one of them), yet the doctor always wins. Is anyone else wondering why this is happening?
2) Elisabeth Sladen's reaction. Sarah Jane has met the Daleks, she knows what they are capable of, she has just realized that all those ships out there are full of Daleks waiting to EXTERMINATE, and she basically descends straight into full-blown terror.
This scene gives me goosebumps every time I watch and I'll tell you why:
1) The message from the Daleks. They have one single message they want the entire human race to hear and what is it? "EXTERMINATE" repeated ad infinitum. That is pants-wettingly scary: they want to do one thing and one thing only and that is to kill us all, and they want everybody to know it. It's very effective and unsettling.
@platypusbabelicious I was commenting on the immensity of the threat, that she would consider her (adopted) son ALREADY DEAD just upon hearing the voice of who they were facing.
I have to commend the actors on this scene. The true terror and horror is clearly written on each of their faces. This scene would have lacked that punch-to-the-gut feeling without it.
Honestly not invested in the series. From an outside point of view this scene is laughably stupid. No offense to fans, I'm sure it has some significance but taken by itself its a guy saying "EXTERMINATE" that sounds like Mr. Freeze from Arkham City.
@Quazaam I really don't notice any sound similarity, except that both have mechanical tone.
But it's no guy. It's the voice of the Dalek Empire unified in its absolute conviction to kill everything in the universe. The Daleks are pretty much the embodiments of irrational hatred, and though their looks are rather outdated compared to modern scifi monsters, that fact keeps them scary.
@Lightice1 I can see where the fear comes from now. I still think it doesn't stack up against other villains though. Take the reavers from firefly. They are just monsters that used to be human and spoilers aside are now just maniac that murder everything. After they torture and skin it. I'm not a fanboi of Firefly but I think that the villain in that is a lot more compelling.
@Quazaam Yes, well, unlike the daleks the reavers are undisciplined and, more signifigantly, as vulnerable to harm as any human. Daleks are a cyborg race designed explicitely for genocide, and have technology sufficiently advanced that they fought a time-travelling empire to a standstill.
@Ganurath Just look at the film the Grudge. Irrational and suspenseful fear is just as strong as real fear. I don't think enough elements of horror are put into the daleks for them to be scary.
@Quazaam Very different kinds of villain types. The Reavers are mad, sadistic killers, visceral and brutal. The Daleks combine mad hatred towards all life with cold, clinical detachment that allows them to form a plan to destroy the entire multiverse in one fell swoop, leaving only them and the void, and see no problem with the idea. The idea of hyperintelligent life-form capable only to feel hatred is pretty scary, and the series has even explored the tragedy behind it a few times.
I agree it's a great scene but I've always been puzzled as to why Gwen didn't know what a Dalek was, seeing as a couple of years earlier they were flying all over London fighting Cybermen.
@MrWhoswho1 The Daleks had only minimal involvement and were hardly seen during the attack, so that is probably why she didn't recognize them. I would also bet that Ianto didn't know who they were--he just didn't ask.
Her face says it all. As she hears the Daleks shrieking "EXTERMINATE" after she thought she never would again, it reminds of her of her bouts with them, alongside the Doctor. Especially with the previous one ending in their seemingly eternal separation. She's sorrowful, fearing she may die, but knows she may be able to see the Doctor once more before she and everyone else does die.
The amazing thing about this scene is that you not only see the horror and the fear and the sense of doom that the characters feel, but you feel it as a shiver runs down your spine, and you realise that you are just as frightened.
This is one brilliant scene. It gathers all previous Doctor Who companions that featured in the series, bound together by a tremendous fear of these hatred-fueled invincible creatures, adds the initial horror for those who haven't met them before, our childhood fears regarding the Daleks, tops it al with a chilling theme and abridges all of the Dalek's anger and pride in one word, repeated like a parasitic thought: EXTERMINATE.
@RedheadDane torchwood would have had their files on the daleks or had access to other sources such as unit. being active members of torchwood they should have been familiarized with likely threats to the planet so they should have known who the daleks were, but they did not show it.
@SpockBorg5 Ianto already knew, he was at the Battle of Canary Wharf. Gwen's an idiot who hasn't bothered to read up on the threats they face, because that type of work would require something other than trying to convince Jack to a.) sleep with her or b.) give that poor alien a fighting chance!!!!!1
They're all scared as hell, but I don't really understand why. I mean, the Daleks aren't really that powerful, and the Doctor had beaten them once, so he can do it again, right? But when I first saw this scene I was scared, too, because of the wonderful acting those actors were doing. I just love Doctor Who! And now I miss 10.
@Alice19ist That's just it though, the Daleks really *are* that powerful. They suffer from villain decay because they have to be beaten (mostly) else it's game over for the universe. Make no mistake though, they are amongst the most dangerous, most powerful factions ever to feature in Doctor Who. They rose up and fought the Time Lords to mutual extinction, and have actually survived their own extinction on numerous occasions.
As a species they will just go on and on until they finally win.
Why doesn't Rose get scared with it? Because she knows BBC Wouldn't make her go trough the Universe walls once more if the doctor wasn't gonna be there...

It's a pretty awesome scene. I do love how they ALL recognise this voice of utter horror from these beings from their past that are quite unlike anything any of them have ever faced individually.
I mean Jack is more scared of the Daleks than he was of Abaddon in the first series of Torchwood.
And I really like Sarah Jane's expression, it's been years since her last encounter which makes it all the more terrifying for her to hear this recogniseable voice as she remembers what they could do.
@Carnage1235 When I was watching this episode, my jaw dropped when I heard the Daleks. Sarah Jane's reaction sold it, though; sure, Jack and Martha both looked scared, but Sarah Jane was one of absolute terror.
In all my years of watching Doctor Who I never had such a feeling of utter horror when I saw this scene for the first time. It gave me nightmares for weeks.
i have a friend thats a complete nutter for doctor who, he was alone in his house and i decided to prank the poor fellow, i rang the doorbell, when he answered i had a recording that i played............ "EXTERMINATE!" scared him half to death...
i had to call him some 6 times till he answered, and then i had time to explain it was a joke xD ain't i a stinker?
@TheJboy88 That's because The Doctor was there. The Doctor wasn't here at that point. And Jack didn't really know what the Dalek were capable of back then.
The first time Jack encountered the Daleks he never heard of them and they actually KILLED him! Now he knows what they are capable of and that scares the Sh*t out of him.
@TheJboy88 Last time he died. For real died. All his defenses were crushed and all those fighting with him murdered. And then he died. Given his past experience, it's sensible for him to say "there's nothing I can do. I'm sorry, we're dead." because that's exactly what happened last time. There was nothing he could do.
It's not their appearance that makes them threatening it's the way people talk about them as sheer death machines. Also that metallic voice is just the icing on the cake, they're also an allegory for the nazis.
@Batou3 ummmm... just HOW MANY doctor who episodes have you seen? they may look like giant salt shakers, but they can cause some serious damage. like, for example, killing you.
oh, and fyi, the only vulnerable spot in a dalek's armor is the eyestalk. to hit anywhere else would call for some serious firepower, like a bazooka or something
@ClawSlasher1 The only one I ever watched, let alone like, Is the impossible astronaut and day of the moon. This show pushes what I can believe too far. and they act like they never seen one of those dumb things in the last 50 years .
I will make this my ringtone someday, and I will turn up the volume as loud as it can go, and make sure that it goes off in class. Often. THIS I SWEAR.
@LostMercenary99 I think it's great. It means that if I'm in arm's length of Jack Harkness then there's a chance I can get kissed too. Maybe more if there's absolutely no way we're going to survive. End of the world sex is the best.
@FullWrangaAlchemist9 I love when she finds out the Doctor can't see or hear her, and instead of trying to figure out what to do she spends the entire time going "I'm here, Doctor!" to a computer she knows has no microphone and no webcam.
Thats why I love Doctor Who and Torchwood at this point the Daleks have had their asses kicked like 4 times already, yet each time they appear they make you feel fear, each time they manage to be a convincing threat
@AliensExist51 Then that broaches *this* question-- why hasn't mankind heard from the Daleks themselves yet, on their merry way to exterminate *Humanity* as well?
Delete is pretty cool as well Doctor who for the cheap special effects and the glaring faults in it's production ( the parking lot in the background of the allien planet with the mini coopers , the boom showing ) gave us many memorable villains and excellent episodes .
this happing at real life like we see ships in the sky and every radio in the world has that message and every brodcasting station shows a Daleck only those who know Dr.Who really know how screwed we are.
Oh cool alien life.

As much as I love this scene, I can't help but supress a slight chuckle at how Barrowman was hamming it up with that "Oh no!"
Mo chuckle for Sarah Jane. She earned her hamminess, and wore it proudly. May her final voyage in the TARDIS be an enjoyable one.

As Bender would say "...Whelp! We're boned!"

EXTERMINATE. In outer space that's the universally recognized signal for "we're screwed".

RIP Elizabeth Sladen...you were the best companion and a wonderful person!

I just LOVE their reactions. This has to be one of the best scene's in all of Doctor Who.
Sarah know's there power, and is freaked out.
Jack know's their power, and is freaked out.
Martha know's their power, and is freaked out.
And Rose is..... Trying to find the Doctor >.<
FullWrangaAlchemist9 9 months ago 3
@FullWrangaAlchemist9 I love when she finds out the Doctor can't see or hear her, and instead of trying to figure out what to do she spends the entire time going "I'm here, Doctor!" to a computer she knows has no microphone and no webcam.

i getting that very odd feeling that im missing the party... there were no daleks on my road, whats going on??
NerrissCullen 9 months ago
They say "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" 22 times...I am that fascinated by the Daleks. I count how many times they say their catchphrase in an episode...

This video is documented evidence for why the UK needs to be nuked.
comedytracker 9 months ago
Thats why I love Doctor Who and Torchwood at this point the Daleks have had their asses kicked like 4 times already, yet each time they appear they make you feel fear, each time they manage to be a convincing threat
billywitchdocter 9 months ago
Liz Sladen has the best reaction here, amazing acting
DI7789 10 months ago
@DI7789 i totally agree, because she knows the Daleks more than any of them and has seen what they can do.

UGH! Ianto, where the hell is the emotion?! You survived Canary Wharf, you've seen what the Daleks can do, why weren't you scared?!

Fact: Aliens exist.
Question: Why haven't we heard from them?
Answer: The Daleks exterminated all of them.
AliensExist51 10 months ago 170
@AliensExist51
no, it's cuz they fell to The Silence....
spontaneoussam2 9 months ago
@AliensExist51 Then that broaches *this* question-- why hasn't mankind heard from the Daleks themselves yet, on their merry way to exterminate *Humanity* as well?
DorianMichaelsIII 7 months ago
Dalaks could exterminate the Borg from star trek resistance would be futile for the Borg no asimulation required just exterminate end of story
Amonthered 10 months ago 5
@Amonthered that makes me wonder....who would win in a battle: Cybermen or The Borg?
StealthClaw1 8 months ago
One of the better "Oh, shit." moments.
Lopperopoly 10 months ago 4
you can see the amount of fear the companions thats why the daleks are awsome but i'd rather prefer the sontarans

WOOO I love the Daleks. They pwned the Cybermen in Doomsday and the cybermen are shi-i-i-it
chocolatefountain95 10 months ago
If I am confronted by a Dalek, I wouldn't scream or run. I would yell "DOCTOR WHO
IS REAL!!!"
Linkfeak 10 months ago 2
@Linkfeak
Then you would be EXTERMINATED. Better to run away while screaming "DOCTOR WHO IS REAL!"

Delete is pretty cool as well Doctor who for the cheap special effects and the glaring faults in it's production ( the parking lot in the background of the allien planet with the mini coopers , the boom showing ) gave us many memorable villains and excellent episodes .

Deadpoolzilla 11 months ago
@Deadpoolzilla I don't think the Justice League could handle the Daleks.
Fbueller129 11 months ago 3
@Fbueller129 Agreed. The last one alive would be Superman, and then they would build Kryptonite-powered guns to kill him with.
