Heres how to do detection with newer version.

Select you object you want the soft body to collide with . Click the object button (F7) then the physics button. In the first box the second tab will say "collision" click it and then click the box that says "collision" If the cloth goes half way trough increase the outer. (sphere's are the easiest). Oh yea. You have to hold the left arrow to start back at frame one everytime you change a setting. Hope this helps :D ill post a vid response.

Hold down the scroll wheel to move around in 3 dimensions. Scroll to zoom. Hold down the shift key and the scroll wheel and move the mouse to pan.

When you clicked new, you forgot to set the weight to 0 first. if you don't do it before you click assign, the weight paint is red and you have to go through the steps again. just make sure before you click assign that the weight is set to 0.

you can also just use the "Cloth" button. You have a bit more control with this, but if you just want a basic cloth effect, Cloth works very well.

I don't know if you will answer, but, when I made my soft bodies, I made a new object so it had something to collide with. But when I went back to add some color to it, it would only apply to the box. And no matter what mode I was it, or what I selected, it only effected the box... what do I do???

There is something weird I gotta tell you, Super3Boy. When you come to the part where you set the weight paint, your plane is all blue. But when am gonna set the weight paint, my plane is ALL red. Why?

that is because you forgot to set the weight to zero. blue = 0, red = 1. the closer to red it is the less it moves

You have to enable softbodies on the cube. Then click on deflection in object mode/physics/fields and deflection. Don't add any weight to the cloth and put it over the cube. then Ctrl+A to play animation. Hope it helped.
