Sick playing man. Gavin is my favorite drummer and I can definitely see how listening to a lot of PT during this time influenced that. I honestly like your version of this song better than Maitland's. Nice work!
Hey, you're a talented drummer (with an impressive set up!) I hope you have your own band... I always think tribute bands (and people that cover others songs) is such a waste :) you're obviously talented - get out there and rock! \m/
is anybody aware that it was chris maitland that wrote the drumming for this track, so comparing chris anderson's drumming to gavins just isnt accurate
Hey so Porcupine Tree is probably the best band ever, and this is great- excellent work. VERY impressive considering you've been drumming for so short a time. As a musician always trying to expand my horizons, I picked up the drums about a year ago, though I'm nowhere near as dedicated or, well, awesome, as you haha.
My buddy just introduced Porcupine Tree to me and I am seriously liking the drummer. Thanks for posting this video. I loved the fill you did on 2:20 and 3:38 the most. Love the sound of your toms too.
absolutly briliiant. seriously. I think you made it perfectly. for real. way to go. keep up the good work with porcupine's tracks. you are very talented and a got a great touch and of course sense of rythm. to tell you the truth I can't believe you studied such delicat and sufficticated drumming like those of gavin harrison and chris maitland for only a year and a half when this video was up. put on more videos please. a fellow musician and porcupine tree lover.
I went to buy a wuhan a few days ago, I had 2 from the late 90's and one finally died. WOW did they drop in quality. there is barely any hammering on them anymore, they are thinner than they were and had horrible overtones, I was crushed.
awesome! my favourite part about your technique is how youd ont try and murder your kit, cymbals in particular. Im a sound engineer and drummers murdering there setup has ruined many fucking gigs!
your drumming is advanced and quite flawless, but I have to admit I wished for a moment that you didn't had the almost the same setup that harrison have, but anyways it is your music, express it as you wish :)
I'm sorry if you faggots can't understand... Chris is awesome. He needs to be working for a band with the levels of talent and technical skill he's demonstrated.
Hey Chris! You probably don't remmember who i am but we talked a while ago about Boston and laptops and ambeint music and....yeah. @Magnum1978 Just so nobody thinks you're insulting the person in the video here, I assume you mean Christ Maitland, the former PT drummer. And yeah, Gavin > Maitland in every conceivable way :D
Hey man, please play songs like Glass Arm Shattering, Fadeaway (XMII) or Stop Swimming, some of the most "musical" drummed songs i've ever heard and your style would fit very well in them.

I'll be putting up some new videos soon, maybe i'll do something like the end of this video except, you know, not laughable :-D
I don't suppose you have a sheet for the fill in the middle with the tripplets, I just can't figure it out, it's all weird. like it starts at an odd place.
Hey man, I love this PT tune, you have a sweet groove! Yeah I noticed some Gavin Harrison come through in your playing too, though he didnt play on this track I don't think. Any way man great playing, you have a nice feel! cheers :)
Nice job man:):) Fantastic really considering your years of experience in the instrument...I also noticed some gavin harisson influences. Good for you.I think that the only thing that needs to be improved is your doubles technique...not speed, technique. It's very important because if you learn to play them the wrong way is difficult to change that later on. Keep up the incrediple work :)
dude, i drum, and i totally respect u man. Porcupine tree songs have the most dynamic parts, and you totally NAILED it. Good job! You can go far dude!
You are certainly one of the CLEANEST drummers I've heard, aside from Maitland and Neil Peart. Bravo. I can't even play this song, and I've been playing for almost 2 decades.
Put quite simply, Chris, you are becoming my favorite YouTube drummer. You are one of the very very few people I've seen play Porcupine Tree music (from both the Maitland era *and* the most recent era) that can actually do it justice. Purely brilliant drumming, can't wait for more vids. Not to mention, your mixes for the most part are excellent, especially in your Awakening video.
i know :) this is a bad mix anyway (the snare is WAY too loud), and I was using a poor overhead mic pattern which i've changed several times. Everything's sounding really good lately!
Any previous musical experience before drumming? Your time is impeccable for 2 years, man. Hell, your time is better than mine and I've been playing for 5. :]
i messed around with guitar for a bit in highschool (nothing serious, just power chords and novice stuff), but i wouldn't really count that as true experience. I've always been a really attentive listener, though, and i'm always practicing in my head. Listening to really complicated stuff doesn't hurt either! almost 90% of the music i enjoy is stuff i can't play (and won't be able to in the foreseeable future)
haha not quite!! it's a very similar setup though (which i'm about to change) - His kit is different, he's got a Sonor Delite, which is made of birch. I've only got a 20" bass drum, as opposed to Gavin's 22". Also, he has a 16" floor tom, which i lack, and he uses very high-end snares (Designer, Yamaha RCs, etc). His cymbal placement, size, and type is also different. Maybe i know too much about his kit!!! haha :) take care
It's unbelievable that you aren't a famous drummer. Please join a band or do audition for semi famous bands. You will make them reach for the sky man.. Really..
a YEAR AND A HALF~ ? Somehow I highly doubt that. Sorry~ but I know drummers who've been drumming for 6-7 years and CAN'T do what Gavin or you just did.! Great job!~ But I'd say you've been bangin' for a while.
haha thanks man :) i'll have to take your disbelief as a compliment, because it's true, I bought my drums (just a bare 6-pc shell pack) in November 2006, and didn't actually have enough hardware (and cymbals) to play until about 2 months later. I take lessons with a guy here in my town - his name's Ben Wiseman, and he's pretty amazing! Berklee grad, etc. I'm ultra-serious about progressing as a musician, and i take my practice time very seriously, and i'm hoping it shows :) take care dude
Sorry Chris~ we'll need proof somehow --TOO GOOD... NOW ~from experience, Im abit older than you and I've been playin' for 6 months. singlerolldoublrollparradiddle` singlerolldoublrollparradiddle scarmuuch will you do the fandago.? Double Stroke Open Roll Flam Tap 56789101112~15 Stroke Roll Double Drag Tap Sorry dude-- NOBODY and I mean NOBODY plays GAVIN in 18 months... so fess up-- its just easier that way~~~~ you're making us all look bad.! :-)
his technique of course can get much better, you can see it in his grip and in his stroke.
but don't be surprised, anyone who is a bit talented and practices, i say, four hours a day for 18 months can play that!
and note that its a very long distance to play something in the way you have heard it from playing something in the way you have imagined it or conveived it!
Man Absolutely nailed it! I love the sound of your drums and you're very good for 1 year and a half =) I'd say you're a natural talent.
I've also played for about a year and I can't even do fast rolls yet! but I'm 15 so I have plenty of time to learn it ! lol ;P. but I'm evolving and my biggest influences are GH and Martin Lopez (from Opeth) Again! very nice drummiing!!
Thanks man :) My snare is a Sonor S-Class in maple, and I use a coated Ambassador on top, with the Hazy Snare side on bottom. The reason the woody tone is so much more pronounced (instead of a sharp, metallic snapping sound)is due to the snare wires - they're Prosound Custom 16-strands, and i cut the outer two wires off each side, making it a 12-strand set. To be honest, that made more of a difference in tone than anything else i've done. EQing was with Waves SSL/RBass/Protools
Those are custom-made chimes, cut down from larger crashes (between 16" and 19") I believe i used a 16" AAX Studio Crash, a 19" Avedish Medium Crash, and a 19" A Custom.
I really like the song, and the drumming is very musical. It fits well. I know it's youtube sound quality, but I'd love to hear those toms sing just a little bit louder. Great mix though, man!
That far left crash is not to be heard? lol.

I take lessons with a guy here in my town - his name's Ben Wiseman, and he's pretty amazing! Berklee grad, etc. I'm ultra-serious about progressing as a musician, and i take my practice time very seriously, and i'm hoping it shows :) take care dude

the man is talented! that's for sure!
his technique of course can get much better, you can see it in his grip and in his stroke.
but don't be surprised, anyone who is a bit talented and practices, i say, four hours a day for 18 months can play that!
and note that its a very long distance to play something in the way you have heard it from playing something in the way you have imagined it or conveived it!

EQing was with Waves SSL/RBass/Protools

which kind of bells ? diameters
