  • That far left crash is not to be heard? lol.

  • @WickedCrawl I second that thats like superhuman...Mozart anybody?

  • Sick playing man. Gavin is my favorite drummer and I can definitely see how listening to a lot of PT during this time influenced that. I honestly like your version of this song better than Maitland's. Nice work!

  • yo where did you get those bells above ur hats or did you make them like gavin?

  • GREAT (COVER + IMPROVISATION) dude =D

  • That was awesome man, fair play!!

  • @bobpower I love you!

  • can you describe your drum set and microphone hardware?

  • nice fills man. very gavin esq. Great cymbal placement too. He loves those groups of 3 and 5.

  • Hey, you're a talented drummer (with an impressive set up!) I hope you have your own band... I always think tribute bands (and people that cover others songs) is such a waste :) you're obviously talented - get out there and rock! \m/

  • well done mate!

  • is anybody aware that it was chris maitland that wrote the drumming for this track, so comparing chris anderson's drumming to gavins just isnt accurate

  • this cover is fucking great!

  • Nice cover guy !

  • it sounds great

  • So sick, so so sick

  • A year and a half! Must be every day for hours then.

    Well done.

Can you tell me what camera you use and what you use to capture the vid please.

Good job. Check out my vids and leave a comment ta.

  • That's sweeeeet...!!!

  • That was absolutely amazing.

Also, you have my ideal drum kit sound... soooo jealous.

  • what chinese do you use?

  • well played. now play gavin.

  • This guy needs to buy some more cymbals.

    Great drumming man

  • ANESTHETIZE!!!

  • for a year n half playing man that is sweet keep it up

  • Your snare sounds fantastic, do you mind me asking what it is?

  • shit dude,i've been playing for a year and a half too,and I've only reached melvins/queens of the stone age-level...

seeying you makes me wanna take drumlessons :o

very nice sounding kit btw, must've cost a shitload of money:o

  • the fill at 2:23 is awesome. nice job on making it so clean

  • Reminds me of Gavin Harrison's setup.

  • jesus how do you achieve that snaresound ???

  • only been playing for a year and half?? damn

  • i adore your setup =O

  • freekin brilliant, dude-- AGAIN-

    7:34 ! → new hidden tom.! kool~

  • if it's true that you've been playing just for a year and a half you're a damn genious and you have a fucking great kit mate, congratulations.

  • You did very well my friend!

  • Hey so Porcupine Tree is probably the best band ever, and this is great- excellent work. VERY impressive considering you've been drumming for so short a time. As a musician always trying to expand my horizons, I picked up the drums about a year ago, though I'm nowhere near as dedicated or, well, awesome, as you haha.

  • wow, REALLY good for a year and a half! Keep it up dude.

  • so much cymbals on the chops, is the only wrong

  • how did you get the music without the drums?

  • @metaldrummer888 download the song?

  • ai so this is you?

  • nicenice

  • awesome !!

  • love that bell!

  • i always wonder, how do you afford all of this?

  • A Job?

  • @gavbag1234 i was looking for a real answer bud. i know now he is an I.T. guy. at least i think.

  • I know, I'm a bit of a smart ass that way. However the answer does seem to be axiomatically "a job".

If you're asking how much he earns, well that's a different box of frogs altogether.

  • Please play FUTILE!

  • That was soooo C00L! Thanks Chris!

  • you are amazing

  • good job man

  • You've got more moves than Ex-Lax! :)

What kind of small chinas are those? How long did it take to learn that song? Thanks.

  • My buddy just introduced Porcupine Tree to me and I am seriously liking the drummer. Thanks for posting this video. I loved the fill you did on 2:20 and 3:38 the most. Love the sound of your toms too.

  • Nice drumming.

  • absolutly briliiant. seriously. I think you made it perfectly. for real. way to go. keep up the good work with porcupine's tracks. you are very talented and a got a great touch and of course sense of rythm. to tell you the truth I can't believe you studied such delicat and sufficticated drumming like those of gavin harrison and chris maitland for only a year and a half when this video was up. put on more videos please. a fellow musician and porcupine tree lover.

  • What are those chinas on your right? Great playing but that K crash on the left isn't practically audible...

    Cheers

  • wow this really helped me to learn some of the fills in this song, spot on man

btw, its nice to see someone else using wuhan chinas, at least thats what they look like

  • also your toms have a really nice sound, very similar to gavin's

  • I went to buy a wuhan a few days ago, I had 2 from the late 90's and one finally died. WOW did they drop in quality. there is barely any hammering on them anymore, they are thinner than they were and had horrible overtones, I was crushed.

  • thats sad i was just thinking about getting another one for the other side of my kit

  • omg

  • wow..you're drumming is perfect

  • YOUR

  • awesome! my favourite part about your technique is how youd ont try and murder your kit, cymbals in particular. Im a sound engineer and drummers murdering there setup has ruined many fucking gigs!

  • your drumming is advanced and quite flawless, but I have to admit I wished for a moment that you didn't had the almost the same setup that harrison have, but anyways it is your music, express it as you wish :)

  • nice one birdman

  • I'm sorry if you faggots can't understand... Chris is awesome. He needs to be working for a band with the levels of talent and technical skill he's demonstrated.

  • Seen a lot of GH/ PT drum covers. nicely done! way to not overplay. shows that you've got some stuff left in the tank.

  • Hey Chris! You probably don't remmember who i am but we talked a while ago about Boston and laptops and ambeint music and....yeah. Anyways got myu recording equipment to work and just uploaded Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled video. Going to see PT September 26th at the House of Blues.

    Keep in touch

    -Mike

  • brillliant job man just like maitlands drumming, very tight and spot on great sounding toms.

  • 2:57 veeeryyy nice ;]

  • pretty nice. Time flows naturally. You should try controlling your ghost notes on the snare tho. Would sound a lot tighter.

  • Killer! xD

  • hello what vor a china have you

  • a little Gavin Harrison... Spectacular!!!

  • ps, could you give me some info on your kit and cymbals and drum heads? I'd love to know what gear complements your great playing

  • does your kick have low volume or did i just kill my speaker?

  • Nice job!

  • great playing greetings from Greece.Chris Maitland is one of the greatest drummers around,i hope for his return to porcupine tree. And the older stuff from the band until ligthbulb sun is so much better than the new.

  • Sorry but Gavin destroys Chris. Chris iks great, but Gavin is so much more creative and has a better sound

  • @Magnum1978 hey cut the guy some slack. he's incredible. but gavin is... well... GAVIN, you know :)

  • @Magnum1978 Dont forget that chris plays only 4 years... and Gavin has been playing since he was a child..

  • @tzouzi He think was talking about Chris Maitland, former Porcupine Tree drummer. Anyway, awesome cover here, great sound, a very talented drummer :)

  • @Magnum1978 Just so nobody thinks you're insulting the person in the video here, I assume you mean Christ Maitland, the former PT drummer. And yeah, Gavin > Maitland in every conceivable way :D

  • @Magnum1978 Chris* lol not Christ

  • U're pretty good for a-year-and a-half drummer!

But maybe you could show a bit more dedication:p but thats a little thingXd

and you certainly have an impressive kit for a-year-and-a-half drummer!!

  • rich parents???:D:D:D

i saved my money 6 months for my cymbals...!

  • Hey man, please play songs like Glass Arm Shattering, Fadeaway (XMII) or Stop Swimming, some of the most "musical" drummed songs i've ever heard and your style would fit very well in them.

  • Your videos are good stuff, man. Keep them up, congrats.

  • awesome! skilled and smooth playing! to me its perfect! The sound and all!!!! wish i could afford all that : (

  • Yea! Good!!!!

  • Immaculate playing, my friend..............

  • I'm 41 and absolutely flipped when I first heard 'Lightbulb Sun'. Are there other videos for the songs from this album????

  • Jesus fuck this guy has K customs... I've been playing for 2 years and I'm still rocking the B8 cymbals I bought about a month after I started.

Bravo on the cover, BTW. Sounds tight!

  • very nice- are they all Gavin riffs at the end..?

    due yer very smooouth---- ☺

  • there might be some "Gavin-inspired" sections in the end of the video, it would make sense considering at this period in my playing, i was listening to a LOT of porcupine tree :)

I'll be putting up some new videos soon, maybe i'll do something like the end of this video except, you know, not laughable :-D

  • Insane...great job.

  • a year and a half.

    jesus man.

    This cover is amazing.

  • dude your awsome!

say do you have the same cymbals as gavin?

  • You for the Epic Win, Sir.

  • kick ass...

    nailed the bastard

  • How the hell did you aquire that much skill and expensive gear in a year and a half?

  • apparently you get in what you get out. i guess this guy put in aloooot

  • Wow, very well done! You have tabs for this anywhere?

Tab begging aside haha... That was awesome, very fluid, relaxed, and in time. Crazy good dude, 5*.

  • The drumming is awesome man uve pretty much nailed it , insane stuff

  • Not only does it sound awesome, your drumming also looks really smooooth and nice. Great cover.

  • nice job, sick set.

what are the china's you've got?

  • well played, right in the pocket =)

  • ok.. anyway... well done. i like the way you played it.

    CHEVERE!

  • I don't suppose you have a sheet for the fill in the middle with the tripplets, I just can't figure it out, it's all weird. like it starts at an odd place.

  • really cool! but rather unfair that you are that good playing a year and a half :P

personally i would have liked to have a bit more of the cymbals in the mix.

    still great!!

  • Well done, especially for someone with only a year and a half of experience. Keep it up, never stop learning.

  • hey dude that was soooo beast btw im 15 and check out my drum solo i used logic audiio to get a sound btw

  • Hey man, I love this PT tune, you have a sweet groove! Yeah I noticed some Gavin Harrison come through in your playing too, though he didnt play on this track I don't think. Any way man great playing, you have a nice feel! cheers :)

  • you're right, chris maitland played drums on this album.

  • couldn't flaw it a bit, very fluent, awesome job

  • nice drumming man, your toms sound really good and the snare drum sounds like heaven, really good fills 5/5

  • Good wrist action and finesse

    However, your lacking in power

Considering your a rock drummer you need a

stronger back beat and more dynamic range

instead of jazzing on rock drums :)

Good timing and your a chopmaster for sure

Join a band and get on the road and pay

your dues instead of sitting in your bedroom

    playing along with records

    :)

  • Nice job man:):) Fantastic really considering your years of experience in the instrument...I also noticed some gavin harisson influences. Good for you.I think that the only thing that needs to be improved is your doubles technique...not speed, technique. It's very important because if you learn to play them the wrong way is difficult to change that later on. Keep up the incrediple work :)

  • great.

  • What kind of remo heads are you using in this video?

  • great timeing!!!!! nice

  • As said before you should make your cymbals louder in the mix. Maybe try adding some compression to your drums in pro tools also

  • amazing job lovin the toms ha

  • ... I'm overwhelmed man! I love this! There are so many questions I want to ask you about some of the fills you did! I totally need to talk to you!

  • But how did you cut them? With what kind of tool?

  • i used some tin-snips and metal shears. it's very difficult, but not impossible :)

  • dude, i drum, and i totally respect u man. Porcupine tree songs have the most dynamic parts, and you totally NAILED it. Good job! You can go far dude!

  • You are certainly one of the CLEANEST drummers I've heard, aside from Maitland and Neil Peart. Bravo. I can't even play this song, and I've been playing for almost 2 decades.

  • Excellent.

  • what kind of mics are you using?

  • -Recording Equipment-

6 x Shure SM57 (toms, undersnare, and aux snare)

    4 x Rode NT5 condenser (overheads L and R, ride , and hi-hats)

    1 x Audix i5 (snare top)

    1 x Audix D6 (kick)

    M-Audio Firewire 1814 (main interface)

    M-Audio ProFire 2626 (using as a A/D converter)

Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro 16-channel mixer

    Pro-Tools M-Powered 7.4cs4

  • Put quite simply, Chris, you are becoming my favorite YouTube drummer. You are one of the very very few people I've seen play Porcupine Tree music (from both the Maitland era *and* the most recent era) that can actually do it justice. Purely brilliant drumming, can't wait for more vids. Not to mention, your mixes for the most part are excellent, especially in your Awakening video.

Keep up the excellent work, mate!

  • for 1 and a half years this is really really good. keep it up.

  • amazing playing! but if possible, try to make crashes/splashes louder. i cant even hear the one to your far left.

  • i know :) this is a bad mix anyway (the snare is WAY too loud), and I was using a poor overhead mic pattern which i've changed several times. Everything's sounding really good lately!

  • Any previous musical experience before drumming? Your time is impeccable for 2 years, man. Hell, your time is better than mine and I've been playing for 5. :]

  • i messed around with guitar for a bit in highschool (nothing serious, just power chords and novice stuff), but i wouldn't really count that as true experience. I've always been a really attentive listener, though, and i'm always practicing in my head. Listening to really complicated stuff doesn't hurt either! almost 90% of the music i enjoy is stuff i can't play (and won't be able to in the foreseeable future)

  • cuando sé es bueno en dos años es porquese ensaya mucho,

  • wow. flawless. i want you in my band. im not even kidding were do you live?

  • dude you have like same kit as gavin harrison except you have a few more splashes!

  • haha not quite!! it's a very similar setup though (which i'm about to change) - His kit is different, he's got a Sonor Delite, which is made of birch. I've only got a 20" bass drum, as opposed to Gavin's 22". Also, he has a 16" floor tom, which i lack, and he uses very high-end snares (Designer, Yamaha RCs, etc). His cymbal placement, size, and type is also different. Maybe i know too much about his kit!!! haha :) take care

  • Omfg... You do really really really kick ass man!

It's unbelievable that you aren't a famous drummer. Please join a band or do audition for semi famous bands. You will make them reach for the sky man.. Really..

    You rock!

    Peace

  • wow!!!very good !!^_^

  • GREAT drumming

  • Love the setup... although it looks awfully familiar. Ever heard of a guy named Gavin Harrison?

    ;-)

All kidding aside, the playing is fantastic, and the drums sound gorgeous.

  • ok I give up .. Can you play Shallow or Halo ?

either way you are way good~

  • a YEAR AND A HALF~ ? Somehow I highly doubt that. Sorry~ but I know drummers who've been drumming for 6-7 years and CAN'T do what Gavin or you just did.! Great job!~ But I'd say you've been bangin' for a while.

  • haha thanks man :) i'll have to take your disbelief as a compliment, because it's true, I bought my drums (just a bare 6-pc shell pack) in November 2006, and didn't actually have enough hardware (and cymbals) to play until about 2 months later. I take lessons with a guy here in my town - his name's Ben Wiseman, and he's pretty amazing! Berklee grad, etc. I'm ultra-serious about progressing as a musician, and i take my practice time very seriously, and i'm hoping it shows :) take care dude

  • Sorry Chris~ we'll need proof somehow --TOO GOOD... NOW ~from experience, Im abit older than you and I've been playin' for 6 months. singlerolldoublrollparradiddle` singlerolldoublrollparradiddle scarmuuch will you do the fandago.? Double Stroke Open Roll Flam Tap 56789101112~15 Stroke Roll Double Drag Tap Sorry dude-- NOBODY and I mean NOBODY plays GAVIN in 18 months... so fess up-- its just easier that way~~~~ you're making us all look bad.! :-)
  • the man is talented! that's for sure!

his technique of course can get much better, you can see it in his grip and in his stroke.

but don't be surprised, anyone who is a bit talented and practices, i say, four hours a day for 18 months can play that!

and note that its a very long distance to play something in the way you have heard it from playing something in the way you have imagined it or conveived it!

  • please don't laugh??? You have a great technique dude great sttuff keep drumming like that!!

  • you seem way serious for someone who has been playing a year and a half, great player, awesome setup.

  • Man Absolutely nailed it! I love the sound of your drums and you're very good for 1 year and a half =) I'd say you're a natural talent.

I've also played for about a year and I can't even do fast rolls yet! but I'm 15 so I have plenty of time to learn it ! lol ;P. but I'm evolving and my biggest influences are GH and Martin Lopez (from Opeth) Again! very nice drummiing!!

  • ohhh nice over head mic set up..i haven't tried that one because i loved panning my cymbals left and right..let me try this once...

  • Love the Band...Love the Drummer...And absolutely Love the way you drum!! A year and a Half...pretty solid i'd say!!

  • Really nice playing and setup!!!

  • I really love your style. I also love your coated emperors on the toms ;)

  • Thanks man :) My snare is a Sonor S-Class in maple, and I use a coated Ambassador on top, with the Hazy Snare side on bottom. The reason the woody tone is so much more pronounced (instead of a sharp, metallic snapping sound)is due to the snare wires - they're Prosound Custom 16-strands, and i cut the outer two wires off each side, making it a 12-strand set. To be honest, that made more of a difference in tone than anything else i've done. EQing was with Waves SSL/RBass/Protools

  • wow, chorus looks like a blast! Nice playing

  • awesome drumming. as usual!!! more vids please! can u pls do Lazarus? please!!!

  • Hey, great!!!! I watched 5 times in a row :)

  • Really good man, i dont like too much the snare sound, but if you like it then dont do anything.

Damn i need a teacher haha.

    Diego.

  • Holy shit, that's a nice set up. Great work.

  • which kind of bells ? diameters

  • Those are custom-made chimes, cut down from larger crashes (between 16" and 19") I believe i used a 16" AAX Studio Crash, a 19" Avedish Medium Crash, and a 19" A Custom.

  • which kind of bells ? zil-bel or what ?

  • Awesome sound and excellent job too!!! 5 stars

  • I really like the song, and the drumming is very musical. It fits well. I know it's youtube sound quality, but I'd love to hear those toms sing just a little bit louder. Great mix though, man!

  • There's nothing to laugh about here, it's very good.

  • Excellent job man, nice set-up to man.

  • I really want to have a go on your set one day, it looks so comfortable...

You've played this song great again by the way. The improvs at the end were great too. I love your bells :)

  • Amazing playing !

That Sonor sounds awesome .. great recording .. 5 stars.
