Laugh if you want, but I truly believe that.
Then why not go with the OPEN Act???? I dont know if I'm right, but doesn't it primarily target foreign websites that are "willfully" allowing online piracy?
how can you suport a law that takes down honest websites that instantly remove illegal material from their service and sites when they find out about it inbetween millions of files.
this law has some good points but the overal ewecution is against a free internet, and endangers the existance of it !
sandra aistars is a fuckin bitch , youtube videos get removed everyday cause its says some copyright crap , and this bitch says this same shit over and over again
fucking fags , dont they get enough money aldready and now these mother fuckers want to earn money from sources which were actually free . damn mother fuckin congress sons of a bitches
ALL THIS SHIT IS HAPPENING JUST BECAUSE JUSTIN BIEBER COMPLAINED COZ HIS BEAUTIFUL MATERIALS HAVE BEEN PIRATED, OBVIOUSLY I PREFER WIKIPEDIA AND I'VE NEVER LISTENED TO JUSTIN BIEBER EVEN BY ACCIDENT.
Great job by Sandra. As an indie filmmaker, I appreciate the work she does every day. You're obviously not familiar with her or the work she does for Copyright Alliance. It's actually one of the few organizations that has grass roots appeal for smaller creative artists who have been essentially ignored in this "debate."
It's apparently convenient to demonize creators as being greedy bloodsuckers. Easier to attack one's opponent rather than debate the merits.
@MegaDorothyD "apparently convenient to demonize creators"
No one's demonizing the creators, rather the distribution monopoly the creators are forced to patronize. To the benefit of indie artists such as us, it gets easier every day to create and distribute one's work without the old guard middlemen taking a cut. Avenues for artists to profit directly from their works, of course, upset the execs, who are being made redundant, ergo SOPA.
There are thousands of artist's in all media who freelance using the web and out number artist's who sell their stuff in stores and other place's. Most of the freelance artist's have to get known through the internet via ads, Facebook, twitter, Photobucket, YouTube, Deviantart and various other site, so they can actually sell their art. Getting rid of these sites doesn't help up coming Artist's. I hope they really think about who actually gets hurt by doing this.
So that's what lying, shit stain cunts who do nothing to further humanity and freedom look like. What's her name, Sandra Aistars? Well I guess now I have a good example of who not to be like. I guess you can learn things from useless cunts on the internet too.
the motion picture industry has been making record profits over the last 5 years because a night out at the movies is ridiculously expensive. for two people to take in a movie and have some popcorn, it's what, about $40. that's highway shrubbery if you ask me! and most hollywood movies are shit anyway. as for the music industry, well, most of that is shit too.
bottom line, it's all distractive bullshit entertainment that is worthy of nothing more than downloading it for free, then deleting it
I hope she's lying, if not I don't know show someone like her can get a job.... Sandra you are not looking at the big picture. I am an artist my self, and I am against SOPA!
Sandra Aistars works for Time Warner, her Copyright Alliance is actually just a fundraising front for her media conglomerate clients who want to lobby to control the internet with DNS take down notices to sites that do no more than link to what they consider infringing. There is no due process provisions in either of these bills, and the claim that these bills are "still a work on progress" only proves to me that they we attempting to overreach in the first place.
ok, so it sounds like only her 11,000,000 clients are allowed to use the internet 'freely'. I am taking that out of context, but this was good to watch. I am against PIPA and SOPA. If she is so dedicated to the free world and freedom of speech then these bills should not exist!
Jews are taking our rights away and they are designing this from with in and now SOPA supporter companies have Jews attached to them. SO lets see Jews take away are ability to use the net then the make money then they take away are ability to get news from YouTube and more. THE CONTROL OF AMERICAN NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT
What I find interesting in what Aistars says is that it's not like there isn't laws against piracy in pretty much all countries in the world. So instead of making laws like this start taking better action in taking down sites like piratebay and torrentz. STOP ruining the internet, just because you're butt hurt
SOPA is not the way piracy should be addressed, most of people who download copyright protected material illegally would not buy it in the first place, so you cannot compute the effect of piracy on entertainment industry accurately. Who is more likely to download a pirated movie, a person wanting to save 10 bucks on a movie to buy cigars or a person who cannot afford a movie because he is in a difficult financial situation (college debt, etc.)?
ANY user generated file-sharing website can be marked as "entirely dedicated to ilegal sharing of copyright protected material" and all websites that link to them can be marked as their companions, i don`t really care where the bill softened, this after all was pretty much the original idea, to allow big companies to have more control over the internet.
Isnt it weird?, that even when napster, the pioneer in music download, appeared on the internet that there are still artists getting rich of their music, movies, tv shows and books?, I mean, shouldnt there have been some sort of artistical armageddon since birth of download? If you wanted to send somebody to jail, you might have thought about sending the first big company to sell us radios with "tape recorders" , that to me is when piracy actually started, too late now.
@melvinsucho it's even better, since the "illegal" sharing of media these media only got more and more popular. lots of artists agree that even piracy boosts their popularity and thus royalties
It's like using DRONE STRiKES that kill dozens, on the effort to assasinate 1 target.
The KEY word in all this mess is MONEY.
If the SHARiNG of information, works or media results in monetary PROFiT, then it is infrigment, & there R already laws that deal with that.
If SHARiNG is not 4 profit, then these laws R all about controlling KNOWLEDGE/POWER & keeping it in the hands of the military, politicians the wealthy 1% dictators*
You want to understand SOPA, Millionaires and Billionaires techies want to support their business model of free labour that Google calls "freedom of speech".Wikipedia and Google have no solutions like the Occupy Wall-Street Protest. Go after the people uploading Jimmy? No Jimmy it only takes one person to upload an illegal movie which is available to millions. Jimmy cites no law, no actual precidents, nothing, he spits fear saying that you are responsible for supporting his job
@flmae46 why is she a bitch??? because she says actually a truth??? a truth that nobody cares to listen a truth that everyone pretends to think its a lie... because what you all want is to have everything on the web for free... you dont respect musitians. you dont respect artists, you dont respect anyone... you (society) are becoming selfish and silly since you think you are special, just because you have a "facebook profile" what an idiots... GROW UP MAN, piracy is stealling!!!
@flmae46 i am stupid?? no... YOU ARE AN IDIOT SIR... because at least i have MORAL VALUES, AT LEAST I KNOW PIRACY DESTROYS OTHER PEOPLES LIVES, you are an HIPOCRITE, you insult mrs Sandra Aistars because she stands agains your selfish behaviour on stealing midia contents, because your are an idiot that are OK with piracy, your an IDIOT that live happy with it, and dont care about the damage you cause to other people... you can insult me, but i at least have HONOR and values... you DONT
I'm willing to bet money that Sandra didn't even read the bill. It states that it will target sites IN THE US that "enables or facilitates" the websites committing the "criminal" acts. The enables or facilitates means virtually any site that lets you comment (a.k.a. the one you're on) is allowed to be shut down if somebody gives a link to a website committing criminal act. Honestly half of the people in the U.S. government talk like they havent gone to college...
Thank you Sandra Aistars, thank you very much for missing the point. I am a hobby crafter/one shot writer, and something like SOPA would even stop what I do, and I don't even make any sort of net profit once time is factored in. These bills would stop me from making crafts of my favourite games, or writing about characters from movies or tv shows because the writing is so unclear.
Jimmy has the right idea about what to do: go back to the drawing board and figure this out, properly.
If it hasn't been said yet, I think it should be pointed out that if these bills pass, those supposed 11 'million' artists will probably all be thrown in jail or fined because they've streamed music over YouTube or something, which would pretty much undo what these bills attempt to accomplish, and probably do even more damage than what was being done in the first place.
Problem is, you don't have "sites entirely dedicated to ilegal sharing of copyright protected material". There's NO such place. There IS sharing, full stop, which can be of legal material as much as ilegal material.
And even those sites which promote, say, watching tv shows on the internet ARE legal: you are allowed to buy a CD and share it with your neighbour. It's the same logic, except you are sharing with complete strangers. Making copies and keeping them is ilegal, not the sharing.
Who the fuck cares?! those artists are already making millions with the internet as is,, Why the fuck does SOPA care so much to protect those artists and help them earn more money?!
No shifting of the burden of the proof? Seriously? I could have sworn I just read something that states "(1) IN GENERAL- At any time after the issuance of an order under subsection (b), a motion to modify, suspend, or vacate the order may be filed by--"
As a Socialist even I do not follow dis. I am a Socialist for the people and must say that if this passes it will effect ALL ENGLISH SITES. Not just the Americans.
SOPA is SO stupid. I don't care about greedy corporate douche bags who want more and more money. No one owns the internet especially not the government!
She does NOT speak for the 2 million artists, she speaks for the 2 dozen CEO's like Sumner Redstone and the obscenely wealthy owners of the media giants. Artists want the creativity and freedom, her bosses want to crush, control and run the internet for their own benefit.
@jredheadgirl well, yes, it's true the tech companies are bigger than those of entertainment (read: orders of magnitude more jobs will be lost by this bill than saved), but in terms of lobbying, the old guard media outspends tech by more than 10x.
if you're really that concerned about piracy, might i remind you that it's actually a service problem, not a legislative one. the internet has demonstrated repeatedly that, if you offer a product people actually want, they will pay for it.
I used to think legacy content was just misguided (open internet is in fact a very good thing for artists), but nope: active, purposeful liars.
The broadly-worded "facilitation" clauses of SOPA and PIPA most certainly DO leave youtube and wikipedia to vulnerable to closure, with no due process. If you don't believe the law will get abused in this fashion, just look to the dajaz1 fiasco. The bills even provide new explicit immunities for abusers.
If something is truly great, even when freely available, sometimes people do spend money. Look at Louis CK. I personally am very happy to hand over $ to support talented artists and musicians.
@erikrei Really? Have you noticed what's been topping the charts (on all or most of the largest music sites) lately? Besides, it's not up to you to decide whether or not I give away my property for free...or not..or how much I charge. I am the creator and the owner; therefore, it is MY decision to make. You are free to invest in the creation of your own content, that you then can give away for free. No one is stopping you from doing that; it is your right.
@jredheadgirl The issue is when you look to defend that right in such a way that infringes on the rights of others to do non-copyright infringing activities it becomes untenable to enforce it in that manner. Unless you're familiar with, and I mean in terms of having taken classes on graph theory and network theory, the term end-to-end you probably are not qualified to talk about whether SOPA breaks the internet.
@jredheadgirl as a consumer, and not as a provider or music industry player, I really could care less about what is topping the charts. Not to shoot my own argument in the foot; yes, money and market talks, and free content is not topping a chart based on sales (duh). But my point is that I and the consumers enjoy the liberty to spend money where we please. I DO willingly pay for content I deem of superb quality. Feel free to charge as much as you want. Who knows if people will pay. That's my pt
The ones who are ripping the artists are the record labels and the film companies as they too are ripping the consumer by selling their products at extravagant prices.
11 million artists? U.S. population is roughly 300 million. This would mean that one out of every 27 Americans is a professional artist. While I won't argue that there is a certain art to making a McDonald's Big Mac, I find this claim dubious. The National Endowment for the Arts correctly reports "There are now almost two million Americans who describe
their primary occupation as artist, representing 1.4 percent of the U.S. labor force" Nice try lady, but being a bull$#!% artist doesn't count!
@ug5a2ld0 There's probably about that many artists, just not professional. I wouldn't consider myself professional even though I sell my photography prints (and the occasional portrait session). But that being said, this witch definitely does not speak for me.
i downloaded the movie fargo the other day and there's a great line near the end where margie says to one of the men who kidnapped jerry's wife, "there's more to life than a little money y'know...don'tcha know that?"
how the rich ownership class hates it when the rest of us share for free, without the motivation of profit, whether it's food, clothing, shelter or music. capitalism views free exchange as a threat to its very existence and will do everything in its power to stop it.
What ever happen to the rant of deregulation? The proposed laws goes opposite. The Aistars was mumbling a lot and was searching for arguments. She sounded like a Fed chairman.
The bill targets major sites because it's so VAGUE. Maybe if they proposed a new bill that wouldn't shut down all these major sites people would SUPPORT IT.
"We’re talking about sites that are operated & dedicated to piracy & that are really preventing individual creators across the country from having an economic livelihood from their creative pursuits."
what a load of crap! the vast majority of these "individual creators" are doing just fine thank you. & anyway, these companies have no real concern for the artists they own, all they care about is their profits growing year after year. they're not satisfied with being rich, they wanna be superrich
with the current state of music and movies (which they continuously produce shit) then I don't see how this bill will help them financially if they enforce censorship. In fact I only see it hurting them... At the same time I am against piracy! Still, the bill is so vague it deems any website that "happens" to link to another site hosting pirated content subject to being blocked by the government (without courts or prior investigation). To stop piracy we need innovation not legislation!!!
I'm an artist, I've sold my work. She doesn't speak for me. Make that 10,999,999 artists. Other artists probably agree with me, but I don't assume to speak for them because that's just pompous and arrogant.
@snoop0x7b I'm an indie artist and she DOES speak for me. If you want to give your work away for free, that's your prerogative. Don't force your business model on me. What do you think would happen if you failed to pay your phone or internet service bill every month? Is THAT free? This is not only about "big" entertainment companies, The vitriol and selfishness of those who fail to recognize the pain inflicted by piracy astounds me.
@jredheadgirl the pain that has been inflicted on others by greed and censorship is far greater than any suffered from the sharing of a song or a movie for free.
@dwdeclare1965 Preventing theft is not censorship. Stealing IS greed defined. First the record companies ripped off the artists and now the people are doing exactly the same thing and claiming that two wrongs make a right.
@jredheadgirl Where the issue of censorship comes up is the fact that many businesses abuse the existing DMCA takedown rules to takedown content that is considered fair use and content critical of them. What SOPA would do would be to allow takedowns to be unilateral, and thus it's open to abuse. I don't think anyone is arguing that the stated intent is censorship or to break the internet, but rather that as written it would lead to that. We can do better than SOPA, to pretend otherwise is dumb.
@jredheadgirl I don't give my work away for free. I happen to have the luxury of selling art on the side, my day job is a software and network engineer... I happen to understand how the internet works, and I'd prefer not to break it. We need not destroy existing internet architecture and due processing in an attempt to curb piracy. My opinion is we need to act, but that SOPA and PIPA are absolute crap.
@jredheadgirl No one's trying to, but the law as written does it. SOPA's DNS blocking provisions will make DNSSEC, a next generation security technology, impossible to implement. Not only that, people can get around the blocking provisions and in doing so will open themselves up to more malware. My opposition of SOPA isn't based on an opposition to stopping piracy, just the stupidity of the bill. Are you a network engineer? No? Then you aren't qualified to say if it will break the internet.
@jredheadgirl just bc no one is trying doesn't mean you should continue to support a bill that WILL break it. Just because we're against SOPA doesn't mean we're pro-piracy. There is simply a better way to do things, and clearly the entertainment industry AND their pet clueless lawmakers have no clue how to do so in an efficient, safe, and logical manner.
@jredheadgirl if you are too lazy to modernize your business model, that's your prerogative, absolutely. if you feel free speech and due process—two of the most important aspects of our entire society—should be recalled for the sake of your laziness, well, that makes you something else entirely. the vitriol of those who think piracy needs to be tackled by litigation, rather than free market competition, is unequivocally disgusting. on the off chance you're not an MPAA sockpuppet: read the bills.
@snoop0x7b I am sure that I will receive all kinds of insults as a result of my standing up for myself. Hurray for tolerance and individual thought. The mob rules..scary.
Look up a video on YouTube by Mike Mozart called "Be a HERO and Help STOP SOPA Now!! I'll tell you How! This Video that Must Be SHARED!" The major media started all the piracy in the first place, now they want special laws to protect themselves, and her point that these bills will hurt corporate artists is simply untrue, these bills will give corporations the power to own the web, it will be just like TV all over again, corporations = 100% of the voice, people = 0% of the voice.
Jesus. They charge for t.v. now and I threw mine out. Now they want to do away with the same thing as radio??!?? If they go on to charge us for breathing we'll have to shoot them.
Sandra Aistars and the Media Moguls she are representing. are the middle men
and they are whining, Why ?
they provide publishing for artists, they tie artists hands, they control how much money
the artist can use to spend on advertising his content.
but thanks to Youtube and the Internet, now artists have an equalizer.
Fans can directly follow their artist on Twitter, and the artist can directly communicate with their fans and sell products directly to the fan. eliminating the middle man.
@izaccy "in matter of fact I have yet to see a mainstream artist advocating for SOPA,"
Do you even need the word "mainstream" in that sentence? The only people I've seen speaking in support of SOPA are people who work for the "MAFIAA"... which, sadly, includes several members of the senate.
Sandra Aistars lost so much credibility just right from the get go,
If there is anything that i love more then what i believe, is the truth.
Sandra began by saying right from the get go, that poor struggling artists are suffering because of the Internet. Thats first not true, second just be freaking honest, you are not speaking for artists. Sony and UMG never cared for their artists, they held their rights and controlled what artists could sing about for decades.
This is all about greed - greedy people in hollywood and in the music industry. If the Pirate Bay was based in America and Hollywood was in, for example, Zimbabwe, I wonder if this would play out the same way?

Great job by Sandra. As an indie filmmaker, I appreciate the work she does every day. You're obviously not familiar with her or the work she does for Copyright Alliance. It's actually one of the few organizations that has grass roots appeal for smaller creative artists who have been essentially ignored in this "debate."
It's apparently convenient to demonize creators as being greedy bloodsuckers. Easier to attack one's opponent rather than debate the merits.
MegaDorothyD 1 month ago

Then those artists can allow those websites to use their copyrighted material.
That's actually how copyrights work.

the motion picture industry has been making record profits over the last 5 years because a night out at the movies is ridiculously expensive. for two people to take in a movie and have some popcorn, it's what, about $40. that's highway shrubbery if you ask me! and most hollywood movies are shit anyway. as for the music industry, well, most of that is shit too.
bottom line, it's all distractive bullshit entertainment that is worthy of nothing more than downloading it for free, then deleting it

What I find interesting in what Aistars says is that it's not like there isn't laws against piracy in pretty much all countries in the world. So instead of making laws like this start taking better action in taking down sites like piratebay and torrentz. STOP ruining the internet, just because you're butt hurt
ThatUnfunGuy 1 month ago
SOPA is not the way piracy should be addressed, most of people who download copyright protected material illegally would not buy it in the first place, so you cannot compute the effect of piracy on entertainment industry accurately. Who is more likely to download a pirated movie, a person wanting to save 10 bucks on a movie to buy cigars or a person who cannot afford a movie because he is in a difficult financial situation (college debt, etc.)?
FlameSwordWielder 1 month ago
ANY user generated file-sharing website can be marked as "entirely dedicated to ilegal sharing of copyright protected material" and all websites that link to them can be marked as their companions, i don`t really care where the bill softened, this after all was pretty much the original idea, to allow big companies to have more control over the internet.

Honestly half of the people in the U.S. government talk like they havent gone to college...

If it hasn't been said yet, I think it should be pointed out that if these bills pass, those supposed 11 'million' artists will probably all be thrown in jail or fined because they've streamed music over YouTube or something, which would pretty much undo what these bills attempt to accomplish, and probably do even more damage than what was being done in the first place.
theblissfulchaos 1 month ago
Problem is, you don't have "sites entirely dedicated to ilegal sharing of copyright protected material". There's NO such place. There IS sharing, full stop, which can be of legal material as much as ilegal material.
And even those sites which promote, say, watching tv shows on the internet ARE legal: you are allowed to buy a CD and share it with your neighbour. It's the same logic, except you are sharing with complete strangers. Making copies and keeping them is ilegal, not the sharing.

@jredheadgirl well, yes, it's true the tech companies are bigger than those of entertainment (read: orders of magnitude more jobs will be lost by this bill than saved), but in terms of lobbying, the old guard media outspends tech by more than 10x.

The broadly-worded "facilitation" clauses of SOPA and PIPA most certainly DO leave youtube and wikipedia to vulnerable to closure, with no due process. No one is stopping you from doing that; it is your right.
jredheadgirl 1 month ago
@jredheadgirl The issue is when you look to defend that right in such a way that infringes on the rights of others to do non-copyright infringing activities it becomes untenable to enforce it in that manner.

@dwdeclare1965 Preventing theft is not censorship. Stealing IS greed defined. First the record companies ripped off the artists and now the people are doing exactly the same thing and claiming that two wrongs make a right.
jredheadgirl 1 month ago
@jredheadgirl Where the issue of censorship comes up is the fact that many businesses abuse the existing DMCA takedown rules to takedown content that is considered fair use and content critical of them. What SOPA would do would be to allow takedowns to be unilateral, and thus it's open to abuse. I don't think anyone is arguing that the stated intent is censorship or to break the internet, but rather that as written it would lead to that. We can do better than SOPA, to pretend otherwise is dumb.
snoop0x7b 1 month ago
@jredheadgirl I don't give my work away for free. I happen to have the luxury of selling art on the side, my day job is a software and network engineer... My opinion is we need to act, but that SOPA and PIPA are absolute crap.
snoop0x7b 1 month ago 2
@snoop0x7b No one is trying to "break" the internet. Stealing is against the law. If we have no rule of law, then there is only anarchy in the end.
jredheadgirl 1 month ago
@jredheadgirl No one's trying to, but the law as written does it. SOPA's DNS blocking provisions will make DNSSEC, a next generation security technology, impossible to implement. Not only that, people can get around the blocking provisions and in doing so will open themselves up to more malware. My opposition of SOPA isn't based on an opposition to stopping piracy, just the stupidity of the bill. Are you a network engineer? No? Then you aren't qualified to say if it will break the internet.
snoop0x7b 1 month ago
@jredheadgirl just bc no one is trying doesn't mean you should continue to support a bill that WILL break it. Just because we're against SOPA doesn't mean we're pro-piracy.
