Funky Blues is a collective masterpiece, but I was shocked to hear that at the end one of the great Ben Webster solos has been mercilessly cut off. The full version is a few minutes longer.
Funky Blues!!!!! Love this song! and going to "Share" with my young grandson who is now discovering the love of jazz and blues, while attending University of Michigan on a scholarship in "music!"
Just re-discovered one of my favorite sax player's from the past as I looked him up today! Enjoyed the sound of his "great" playing on the sax back then and also on this video! And added so many of his recordings today...."A Pound Of Blues" and "Wham", just to name a few. So good to hear him play the blues!
So there's Hodges at first, then Parker, but who's third ? I'm not familiar with Benny Carter's style I must admit. But that doesn't sound like Ben Webster, this I'm sure of -because he's at last-!
@WAMEDJO hey, here is all the musicians on this track
Charlie Shavers (tp) Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges, Charlie Parker (as) Flip Phillips, Ben Webster (ts) Oscar Peterson (p) Barney Kessel (g) Ray Brown (b) J.C. Heard (d)
@WAMEDJO You're correct, it's Benny Carter who follows Parker. The remaining solos are: Peterson, Kessel, Shavers, Philips, I suppose Webster played after Philips, but of course track is cut short.

@wamedjo. 3rd is Carter, not Webster.

@WAMEDJO for me Kessel was a real treat on this track. He is so good and was never formally taught guitar
