Smoke from punk wood, as well as the birch fungus Inotus Obliquus will repel insects fairly well. If need be, animal fat, mud and clay will all keep the bugs from biting through. Natives in northern Ontario and Quebec often mixed rendered animal fat with ochres and charcoal, do keep the biting bugs off, and add some decoration.
