  • 3 words: positive air shutoff

  • How does this happen & how best to stop it & still save the engine? - possibly.

  • is it a ford?

Prolly just wants to end its misery

HOWEVER, this is why a jake brake is always a good thing to have

  • how about pull the fuse to the fuel pump..??

  • @kingofnone its burning its own oil

  • why doesn't some one grab a fire extinguisher? there designed to put out fires and the co2 ones work grate on a runaway.

  • Typical yanks, engine blows up WOOOO ALRIGGHTT GET SOMEEE WOOO AMERICORR!

  • well thats a dodge cummins for you

  • @thunderbird948 Yap... Just curious what do you drive?

  • junk

  • drop a rag in a turbo? of a cummins screaming? i think not

  • @11TurboDiesel it will work . better lose a turbo then a engine

  • put it in 5th and stall it...

  • damn shes still runing

  • i like how the driver is just like what ever

  • The lady at 0:06 sounds like Edith Bunker.

  • Please consider renameing this video "Cluster Fuck"

  • @jackmiser AGREED. For a bunch of guys that do this as a SPORT, how the hell did no one know how to kill it?

  • put her in gear: FULL PULL

  • He should have bought a 6.0 Powerstroke!

  • @speedy02 haha the motor would be blown

  • Comment removed

  • I love the guys still faffing around in the cabin "Whah wownt tis dang thing stawp!?! I done gawt the key raht here!"

  • yeah i got that, I made a mistake. You can normally kill the intake going to the turbo, for some reason I said fuel... probably because I work with gasoline engines too much.

thanks, now everyone stop trolling me!!!

  • should prob put a^positive air shutoff on it

  • The turbo**

  • Should have covered thwarting.turbo

  • how about disconnecting your fuel and waiting about 30 seconds?

  • @walperstyle Gahhh!!!

    Look up "diesel runaway"

    Become an expert

    Then think about giving tips

  • @Bosmob oh crap, I meant to say AIR lol.

  • @walperstyle uh huh...

  • @Bosmob lmao yeah that would help some people. The best way to stop a run away is with a c02 fire extinguisher

  • @alanack67 actually the best way to stop a runaway deisel is with a roda emergancy air shutoff valve in the intake. aCO2 extinguisher is a close second best

  • @speed150mph i think a decompression lever would work pretty well too my Kubota tractor has one and says its for cold starting and in case of a run away

  • @walperstyle Its running on oil pushed up past the piston into the combustion chamber. Not fuel. Disconnecting your fuel lines would accomplish nothing in this situation.

  • A 2x6 over the turbo will smother it out real easy. coulda saved him a motor...

  • When this video said runway dodge, I was expecting it to go driving off...not just sittin there...

  • dump a CO2 FIRE EX

  • It's probably been said already, but aside from smothering it with CO2 could'nt they also put it in high gear let the clutch out (unless it's an auto) and lugged it to death? Doubt it would go anywhere in the dirt with all that weight hooked to it.

  • A CO2 extinguisher would have been better than feeding an engine monoammonium phosphate powder,

  • Nice video!

  • Shove a fire extinguisher in the turbo inlet and pull the trigger.

  • haha, brilliant.. there goes a thousand dollars, there goes a thousand dollars, there goes a thousand dollars, there goes a thousand dollars,

  • why didnt they just plug up the intake it would have died in a few seconds ....what a bunch of idiots

  • a ball valve in the fuel line would have made for much less suffering. and cost about 10 bucks.

  • @foo444 its not running on fuel at this point. its burning its own oil as fuel. the only way to stop it is to kill all the air to it.

  • @foo444 not really... it was running off of it's own oil when it ran away... really the only way to stop it would have been to shut off ALL the air...

  • @ivankoran balls didn't realize it had blown a turbo. yeah if i had a rig like this id have a simple way to cut off air with guillotine valve or something inline in the intake.

  • to much boost

  • Need a positive air shut off valve

  • Wonder why you didnt take your cap off and put it in the intake ,heck jerk your shirt off and stop up the intake, or better yet, hook the chain back up on the sled put it in a higher gear let out on the clutch and let it smother it self out!!!!Sorry this is just advise from an ole logger and sawmiller that has to use common since to stay in business at work or play!!!! Try it,it works...

  • @ldc71960 No to be a dick, but 1 the turbo would shred whatever you put into making the problem worse and it would be my guess that its an automatic, the reason so and all he would have to do is pop the clutch and done, but i believe the 1:30 of engine problems proves it would be an auto. Just my knowledge on diesel's

  • well how much damage would the dry-chemical extinguisher do? just wondering

  • dude this happened to my 2003 ford f-250 the turbo went out and i bought a new one and forgot that all the oil went to the exhaust and my shit just revved till it blew the engine...now im out $3500 buying a new engine lol

  • It's supposed to do that, that's how he warms it up before the pull lol

  • i saw a vid of 1 person stopping a runaway in fucking 11 secs,,,,,,,,,come on , it shouldnt take about 7 ppl to stop a runaway

  • Why did it take 7 people 1 minute 30 seconds to stop a runaway diesel? This is something that the driver should *always* be prepared to handle when it comes to it!

  • @hoppsrabbit i agree

  • Stupid asses!

  • seriously? "drop a rag in the turbo!" yea when that rag comes out the exhaust in a million little fibers what r u gonna do? not even a phone book will stop a runaway diesel, itll just come out as confettii, best thing to use is a 1/2" thick rubber mat

  • THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE FUCK WITH SHIT THEY DONT UNDERSTAND.. EVERYBODYS A OVERNITE DIESEL INJECTION SPECIALIST

  • @buzzindozen it was a turbo seal u dummy, if it was an injector pump run away it would of rev to the sky till it sent a few rods outa the block. derp

  • @ps3dethman1 Yerr talkin out your ass. IF it was turbo SEALS it will burn up the engine oil in 30sec or less @ that rpm. And when they run on oil they dont sit there at a fast idle. You should stick to gaming, not commenting

  • @buzzindozen turbo seals run aways can run for several minutes, it all depends on how fast the oil is pooring outa the seal, sometimes they wont even run for 2 seconds cuz the engine hydo lock's. ive seen a 95 powerstroke make it 5 miles to the shop, it had a run away seal. he did smoke the engine but it was running untill we pinched the intake pipe.

  • @ps3dethman1 u got pwned buzzindoozen mutt

  • Come on, how many people does it take to cover a fucking turbo up.

  • fat bastard driver couldn't be bothered to get out of the cab while all that was going on!!!

  • @discocreator76 somebody has to stay in the truck in case shit really hits the fan. you dont want a runaway engine with nobody behind the wheel.

  • @dookie600f4i pretty sure he would have took it out of gear

  • @dookie600f4i What would happen? it wasn't in gear so it wouldn't go anywhere...

  • @kylebohde like the sun

  • could somebody explain what was going on here? thanks

  • @lolbeaner69 The engine could not be normally turned off, it started injesting and running on its own oil.

  • Dont make a Cummins mad?

  • All you have to do is stop the turbo throw a rag in it or something

  • uhhh...the warranty is ..."VOID"...sorry..Cummins

  • Don't hurry or anything, overalls man....

  • Yeah throw a towel in the turbo. It's toast anyways. Save the engine.

  • well that ain't no good but it damn sure sounded badass

  • can't stop a cummins,to much power to shut off,lol

  • @NIGHTRIDER995 nope, just too shitty and broke

  • @trueblue151 idk man me and all my 10 redneck friends have cummins from 1stgen to 3rd gen we love them all wouldn't trade a cummins for nothing and i've been through all chevy, ford trucks dodge is deff the best you wouldn't know unless you own one.....

  • @NIGHTRIDER995 Ive got a f250 6.4L powerstroke turbo diesel and it does twice as much as my old cummins with out blowing the tranny

  • @trueblue151 oh yeah...fords are nice but id rather be in a dodge,my buddy just blew up his power stroke....not sure wut happened but he has to lift the cab off to rebuild it,yeah my 03 and a half dodge cummins dually i used to have had a predator programmer, removed silencer ring from turbo, modded intake,5 inch exhaust turbo back great truck took and bad ass beating but never gave me any trouble

  • @NIGHTRIDER995 im not saying i hate other companies. i think its all about how you treat the truck and how you modify them. there are chances for mechanical failures in any engine

  • @trueblue151 oh for sure

  • How much damage was done to the engine because of the rev being so high? I bet it blew a head gasket..

  • Something kind of similar happened to a buddies drift car, just got it hooked up by the tow hook quickly then dumped the clutch and stalled it out, kinda funny to watch though

  • throwin a rag in the turbo will cut off the air supply... its actually not a dumb idea... unless u have an airfilter

  • Tell the announcer to shut the hell up for a second.

  • there are several ways to shut down a runaway diesel, board over the intake or turbo, fire extinguisher into the intake, or if you're lucky, you've got a stick shift and can stall it. all of these have been noted by previous posters. The most important thing is to recognize when its happening and act fast.

  • Why cant you just install valves on the oil lines to and from the turbo. I have seen videos of railroad engines destroying themselves when the seals failed. The air damper didn't stop them. It could have been a simple thing to kill the oil supply with a couple of valves. As in another comment, new turbo is cheaper than a new engine.

  • Just undo the battery.

  • @rcturbos Since the engine is running on oil sucked in through the turbocharger, disconnecting the battery would not make any difference.

  • Just up do the battery.

  • there goes a thousand dollars there goes a thousand dollars!

  • If it was still hooked to the sled put it in high gear and dump the clutch.

  • @mrplowjrezv ya no shit thats what we always do

  • @mrplowjrezv he might just smoke the tires haha

  • @mrplowjrezv THen have not tranny?

  • @BuffaloBillCody987 I've run in high gear @ WOT all the time, never lost a trans b/c of it. Might smoke the clutch, but hey either is cheaper than replacing a 5.9.

  • @mrplowjrezv they arent that smart...or its an auto

  • @mrplowjrezv

^ This is how the hell we stop them too and it stops them damn quick.

  • thats one good and bad thing about diesels, they can run on anny kind of petrolium bassed oil, and they dont need spark or other suporting equipment to run, give her fuel and shel go.... but the bad thing about that is it will keep going till the fuel is gone or the injection is shut off...

  • Umm... Do SOMETHING!!!

  • thats why i keep a 12x12 in board in the back seat. works every time man

  • Comment removed

  • @norfolkdash9 in the patch they use a positive air shut down works every time ;)

  • @redneckD90

What do you mean by patch?

  • @redneckD90 oil patch

  • That's why it should have a guillotine type blockoff on the intake side of the turbo.

  • every single comment thats been made about this video is completely ignorant. do some research on diesel motors, then come back.

  • Couldn't they just put the positive wire to ground?

  • @ZombieTacoWaffles

    yeah theyre dumbassed

  • @ZombieTacoWaffles

    yeah theyre dumbasses

  • @ZombieTacoWaffles it dont work that way on diesel there a compression ignition motor u short em out they keep runnin unless they have electronic injectors

  • Comment removed

  • @ZombieTacoWaffles, and if its mechanical injection??? also what does it matter, the air dont get injected, it comes through the valves. basically whats happening is instead of sucking air in compressing it and then injecting fuel the oil is getting sucked in with the air and its all being done in one step

  • How does this happen usually?

  • Comment removed

  • @JustinHansen6669 : So if the diesel runs on the engine oil why cant you just simplty shit off the engine?

  • @JustinHansen6669 : I mean SHUT* off the engine haha

  • @elitecssplayer, even on modern engines just shutting it off wont do it. you are turning off the power to the injectors but the oil isnt being injected throught the injectors, the engine oil is being sucked into the intake side of the turbo and forced in through the intake valves with the air on the intake stroke, sort of like a gas engine in a way (where the fuel and air come in together).

  • @JustinHansen6669 : Oh I get it now, thanks alot!

  • @JustinHansen6669, in that case just like a few on here have said... suffocate it with a co2 fire extinguisher, yes people use dry chem extinguishers but your asking for alot of problems that you dont need, but if its the only thing you have then use it.. im not sure on this but from the people that i have talked to that did have to use a dry chem they said it left a hellish film on the cyclinder walls. again im not sure if thats the truth or not but we always have a Co2 extinguisher with us

  • stall the truck?? could work

  • i geuss its true cant kill a cummins motor.

  • idiot rip the intake duct out and cover the choke or a throttle body dont spray dry chemical into the engine now you're gonna end up replacing most of the internals and fuel injectors and god knows how many more parts

  • @volodymyrm1 Holy shit you're fucking dumb

  • @gregrob20 wow cunt really?

  • throw a towel into the turbo lol. what a moron

  • @tqadir007 That's a legit way to kill it. It kills the turbo, and shuts the engine down. New turbo is cheaper than an entire new engine, right?

  • @themechanic345 The best way is to spray a co2 fire extinguisher into the intake. I have seen a runaway diesel suck a shop rag through the intake spit it out the exhaust as ash.

  • @specialross77

Yeah a rag would be a useless way of trying to stop a runaway...I agree with what you said about the fire extinguisher though..That is the best way to stop a runaway.. No oxygen no combustion..

  • @themechanic345 how the hell is a rag going to shut the car off. if anything it will chew up the compressor turbine and those little peices will go into the engine.

  • @tqadir007 no thats the only way you can stop it, cus the engine is running on the oil leaking through the turbo seals, so you have to stop the turbo spinning to stop the engine.

  • @tqadir007 thats how you cut the air to the turbo

  • @tqadir007 towel will do it, or your sweatshirt. Anything is better than letting it run away and grenade the motor. Its amazing how none of these rednecks have any idea what to do.

  • @tqadir007 lol i bet the 29 ppl who thumbs up this watched detroit diesel runaway last vid.

  • @weedissafer yea bet i did

  • @weedissafer haha i did

  • @tqadir007 That's not a stupid comment. Obviously you don't know much about these things. Putting a rag over the intake would shut her down. Using the exstiguisher is the best thing to do but anything that would choke the engine would save it and a rag would do it.

  • I would have liked to see her eat if he dropped the cluch though

  • lets give him a big hand for melting every piston

  • So thats where the Ironman sled ended up. I remember that thing back in Ravenna Nebraska

  • couldn't the guy dropped in last gear and dump the clutch? if it were a manual of coarse.

  • @pdgeman I honestly don't know much about pulling trucks but I'm pretty sure most of them have powerglide transmissions (someone correct me if thats wrong) in which no you cant put it in the last gear and dump it.

  • LMAO PUT A RAG IN THE TURBO

  • why not put it in a high gear and stall the engine?

  • Dads big rig ran away on the side of the road once. He put a towel in it and the turbo sucked the entire thing into the engine, stuttered and kept running. Turbo blew about minute after that.

  • you know that things got compression if it can run on motor oil

  • On the big diesel pulling tractors they have a shutter or door they can pull to take air away , that is how a diesel is stopped. I still love the " Throw a rag in the turbo" that is funny.

  • poor cummins :(

  • This is why you keep a small piece of plywood in the truck so you can block the damn air from getting in the turbo if this happens!

  • Ever hear of a fire triangle? You need 3 things for the engine to fire (air, source of ignition, and fuel) You cant stop igniton because you can't stop the compression. You can stop the fuel or the air though. Hence either screw around talkin off the oir line to the turbo (or cutting it) or you simply hit the intake with a CO2 fire extinguisher. Problem solved. Dry chem extinguishers are HORRIBLE to spray directly into the intake. They work if you have nothing else but CO2 is best.

  • @hlm3588 When I was pulling I had a halon extenguisher attached to my tractor. Halon is very effective, extenguishers are small, and it wont hurt the engine.

  • Can of coke into the intake?

  • Throw a rag in the turbo , what a asshole...

  • @rotax7804 thats how you stop it... asshole

  • You could pinch off the turbo oil line which would kill the fuel source or

put a block of wood over the intake or

kill the motor with a co2 fire extingisher

  • @markification hell,the turbo's screwed,just throw your shirt in it

  • @osp80 Your shirt would just get sucked into the turbo shreded in the motor and shot out the exhaust.

  • @markification shop rags i've stopped a runaway with must be magic

  • @osp80 I don't think it would be impossible to stop a runnaway with a shirt if it were running at low rpms

but I saw another vid of this same runnaway were about four guys took off their shirts to try to choke the engine and none worked they ended up shuting down the motor with a fire extingisher

  • @markification im not for sure but some diesel can malfunction to where the motor will start to just run off its own oil and the motor just runs away

  • @Ryanligon72 The most common cause for a runnaway condition is a blown oil seal in the turbo and the engine will run on the supply of oil going to the turbo until you stop the oil going to the turbo or choke the engine air intake off or kill the combustion process with co2, or the engine runs out of oil.

  • @Ryanligon72, all turbocharged diesels can.. all it takes is a blown oil seal.

  • @markification A diesel can also suck up oil out of the crankcase as well, so pinching the turbo oil line isn't a great option. CO2 is the best ,as you don't have to be as close if the engine comes apart.

  • if the wheels start spinning when you dump the clutch apply your brakes, if you can still spin wheels with brakes applied you should really get a service once in a while

  • the reason dumping the clutch didnt work is when the turbo blows it takes the oil from the motor and sends it into the intake of the truck oil burns just like fuel if it is atomized by ht e injecters the only way to kill it is to smother the intake with a piece of steel

  • ...kill th' fuel?

  • i wonder if you could make an intake block like an exhaust cutout that would be able to handle the boost when running normaly but cut off any oil and air from the intake incase of a run away condition
