Kant's actual point is that the soul IS non-mortal is, in transcendental logic, a misleading statement of affirmation, whereas the soul is NOT mortal at least "wards off an error". The point is central to a reading of Kant, reoccuring as it does in the antinomies, for me the culmination of the critique.
The Lacanian interpretation of the restaurant story reminds me of George's anxiety over the risotto in Seinfeld.
