So many distros, i just migrated from WINDOWS to LINUX (sabayon), and even though i dont NOTHING about LINUX, i think i could learn to love it. Oh yeah, by the way, whats the difference betwen Ubuntu, Beryl, Sabayon, SUSE, in words a non geek-hacker understands?.
Loool. its different distributions. Like different operating systems But all based in linux. but made by different persons and with different features. Some smaller... some faster... some "geeker"... some with better graphic effects.... some better for working. Some simplier to use too.
It's all about search for each one on linux's website, and see what you like the most.
@osmodivs the linux kernel/engine = the same of Ubuntu, Sabayon and SUSE, beryl isn't a distro but a window manager who now is merged with compiz, and the diffrence, and ubuntu = debian based, Sabayon = Gentoo based and SUSE... correct me if im wrong but i thought it had something to do with Slackwareso the diffrence between the distro's is the the company/foundation who looks after it, and what package's it uses, apt-get, portage, RPM and what GUI it has, but nowadays you can easyly change that
I don't like when people get Linux just for the eyecandy. Then they ask "Where is the EXE's?" and "WHY CAN'T I PLAY MY GAMES?!?" and so on. I hate it infact... It has grown towards a disliking of Compiz and Beryl... Metacity is better....
dude ill post a vid of my linux, using command lines, effects, and all sorts of stuff, more than just this...im not trying to down the vid, im just trying to educate. that there is more to linux, then the "eyecandy".
Watch Kill Bill Volume 1, and when you hear this music and see the scenes you'll understand why it's not a good idea to play this music at your grandma's funeral!!!!! It is cool music, though...
bro you know how much more you can do with linux. there are even far more extensive effects then this, its really awsome, i would recommend ubuntu 8.04, its pretty good, i have a lot of computers, and i am running multiple linux, and i find that unbuntu works best ...thats just my personal opinion. suse is more for beginners though, its really easy to use, and its a pretty decent OS, its really different from ubuntu, so pick your choice.
Well, what are your hardware specs? Is your laptop old or new. Linux supports most hardware, but not all. No, I don't know of any software which will tell you but the best way would be to download the ubuntu livecd. If that works then the install will most likely work.
You probably don't have it enabled. If you have Compiz fusion settings installed then go into the settings and find Desktop Cube. Enable that and also enable "Rotate Cube". Then try it.
Open Compiz Config settings manager and go to general settings. On the Desktop Size tab, change the Horizontal Desktop size (I think) from 2 to 4. Try it now.
I had Beryl desktop on my laptop. That was working pretty smooth w/ my ATI card but I used eny to install a driver to make the compiz-fusion work out. Danm... I almost crashed my system.. the xorg stuff was completely messed and I dunno how to fix it. Anyways, the effects are pretty cool but I lost some of machine performance because I have a 3 year laptop.
For anyone that can answer this... Linux - are these different Linux operating systems only available for PCs? Or can they be used on a Mac? I have actually never known anyone that used Linux so I was just curious.
lol yeah also Mac.. through bootcamp or for old PowerPC there are quite a few distros that support it. I dont know how do you install it on a Power PC but I have seen quite a few distro's support it
Can you run ordinary games such as Team Fortress2 on Linux? And are there any Linuxes that you can just download onto your harddrive so that I don't have to keep switching from Windows to Linux?
IF you download something called Wine for linux than you may be able to run Team Fortress. But I recommend that you buy a application called Cedega for linux gameing becuse i had a graphics problem with wine and world of warcraft but that just might of been my graphics card.

TLQ, you sound like an ITT graduate, which isn't a good thing. 95 & 98se??? Are you retarded? I'm not a bandwagon fanboy, each OS has it's unique niche & strengths/weaknesses. thats awsome, i like macs, now im thinking about go with linux,,,...........i need info about it, what hardware do i need? some one let me know please!!!!
it depends, since you are probally running apple id sugessing going with a distro like yellowdog linux, but suse and Ubuntu might run on macs. I dont know since I only ever owned 1 mac that I installed with linux
It should be possible since you have that amount of RAM.
If my memory isn't all messed up I think you should be able to do it with even a 400 mhz CPU. The main concern I would think is the strength of the GPU. Give it a try I think you might be surprised.
Mathijsweb , this 'should' work on your system, The processor and ram is plenty Im not sure if there is any rendering issues with oyur video card, however SuSe plays very nice with Nvidia cards.
No exactamente necesitas ser un "NERD" para eso, solo tienes que saber lo basico de linux. ya practicamente linux y los diferentes distros estan saliendo mucho mas user firendly.
this is not hard to do on any Linux Distro just get Berly and then install the XGL code with Berley and bingo i have this runing on Ubunto and have had it running on Fedora
My fav distro so far has been Knoppix STD, though it doesnt have the XGL eye candy, I feel that in about a year, that well all see some huge improvements in stability and more flexibility in applications
I don't know enough about linux to get my ATI card working :( it looks like the update for SuSE 10.1 makes SLED 10 look like crap, i wonder how 10.2 will fare

Because Ubuntu supports your hardware automatically with a default install.

For future reference, recording programs look a lot nicer than putting a camera on your monitor.
But nice video none the less.

No exactamente necesitas ser un "NERD" para eso, solo tienes que saber lo basico de linux. ya practicamente linux y los diferentes distros estan saliendo mucho mas user firendly.
juannicolas123 5 years ago
this is not hard to do on any Linux Distro just get Berly and then install the XGL code with Berley and bingo i have this runing on Ubunto and have had it running on Fedora

Linux is already squishing windows, the bad part of linux is the gaming. That's it.

My fav distro so far has been Knoppix STD, though it doesnt have the XGL eye candy, I feel that in about a year, that well all see some huge improvements in stability and more flexibility in applications
Exemptpersonal 5 years ago
I just installed XGL. Let's see if it is stable. GLX was crap under my old SuSE 10.0.

What's your favorite distribution?
granthef7 5 years ago
Im using a Nvidia 6800 ultra on that setup there, but I had a small annoyance getting ATI cards to work with XGL
Exemptpersonal 5 years ago
i finally got Xgl working with my ATI card for SLED 10 :)
granthef7 5 years ago
Exempt, what kind of graphics card do you have?
I don't know enough about linux to get my ATI card working :( it looks like the update for SuSE 10.1 makes SLED 10 look like crap, i wonder how 10.2 will fare
granthef7 5 years ago
Anything is better than windows, unfortunately, I have to windows for gaming....
