  • hi there my name is marcus i am trying to put freenas on my old window computer i do every thin u say and it is still not working

ps i do not no what is going on when i remove the cd from the cd drive it is not booting up with freenas

now i did opition 3 from the install menu and then every thing is fine and all but when i do every thing els then reboot there is no file or anything on computer

with out the cd it is not doing any thing please help

  • I guess I'm missing something, but I just don't get it, please help me out on this. Wouldn't it be easier to set up a windows or Linux box with a samba share. Or a DC hub. Or a Nix box that you can have a script rsync to. This seems overcomplicated solution that doesn't seem to provide any extra benefits. What am I missing here? Seriously I wish to know as atm I'm apparently ignorant of the advantages of this type of NAS/FreeNAS.

  • easy setup..headless(no monitor/keyboard needed) box..

O.S. only needs 32mb install space

Was installed/running within 1 minute of burning the iso.(took 5-10 minutes to configure afterwards)

It just sits on your lan doing its job when needed....

wow setting up a win$/Nix box now seems overblown/overcomplicated

  • Thanks for the info warcraftpeon :) That does break it down for me. I imagine this would be a great solution if you had a lot of old components lying around which weren't being used. I'll keep it in mind if I ever find myself in that situation.

    Cheers

  • @Gerrrry 1- it's free. 2 - it's low power 3- it's stable, try running a windows server for any period of time.

  • @nefarious you'll notice I said "or Linux box" so number 1 and 3 aren't really relevant. Low power, well I guess, yeah although you could use use a full install to do a lot more so could end up saving power by not needing a second server to do other tasks.

  • zomg noobs :/

  • Freenas is nice! But it is very important to follow each and every single step during setup. Everytime I had a problem seeing my folders it was a missed step on my part. Other than that, everything works great. There is a nice animated quick start guide on the freenas website which will get you up and running.

  • i think this is one of the greatest free software projects ever, i use it freenas for over a year now.

  • You can buy a pentium computer in the garage sale, for $2, Install Network Card, then install FreeNas, then connect it to your router, then configure it then your good.

  • Thanks , something is better than nothing..

atleast i can save on windows server OS space/licence for file server.

    i got every thing thru

but my \\freenas is empty how to add folder buddy?

  • this os is great! my old pc has a new life (without monitor)

  • no raid controller card?

  • HW raid sucks under *NIX

  • i love how the CD/DVD drive wasnt plugged up in the PC.

  • i can see my freenas device in the Network places, but how can add folders?? i have not permission?? please!! HELP ME!! give me please step for step

  • Very nice video.

  • Great video! Try and bolt that table down (I was getting sea-sick). To backup up your drive, use the freeware called Windows DeltaCopy. It's much better than batch method, runs as a service and can be set to only copies files that have changed.

Oh, one more thing.. your wall clock needs a battery ;-)

  • Man if I'm going to jack up my hand like that installing FreeNAS I'll pass and just buy a NAS appliance!

  • NVM, i realized it had a web interface

  • is it hard to set up SSH server? can you login as root?

  • :) great vid

  • Good work, make a follow up, that's interesting

    Thanks
