I love how Shannon performed that free hip hecht. She never broke form, and always had a nice swing once she regrasped the bar from low to high. I'm not sure what the rating was for that skill during that time, but I do wish she had kept it.
@1982mjdk I wish she had kept it also, but that routine was inpossible for her by 1996. Her left wrist had been in such bad shape,... it just wouldn't happened. :-( This performance would have medaled in Atlanta.
wasn't really thinking about individual medal for the event, just saying it had a couple more elements that made it more difficult/exciting vs. the watered down one she did at the olympics which still was very good for the time... she's my all time fav
beautiful! yes she just overcame a stomach muscle injury and a hamstring she had during this competiton so that is why her tumbling wasen't great in this competiton on floor. Though i am glad she won well deserved i think. Everything was beatuiful lol
that one and a half turn to underswing handstand is fucking amazing. This routine should have been used for the olympics but i think she just got too big to do some of the moves
growing up this girl used to be my idol and i used to tell myself i was going to be just like her...until i was sent to boarding school and i grew to like 5'9....
She was injured by 96. So badly she couldn't even grasp the bar. It was amazing she lasted two Olympics. She was always competing injured. That pulled stomach muscle I heard had her in tears all the time in 94
Yep they showed a clip of her at one of the meets, it may have been nationals, while she was practicing her routine and had to stop in the middle of it. Then she grabbed her wrist while she was tears, poor thing.
@TuesdayPillow exuse me? she was not OVER with her injury?! she had surgery A MONTH BEFORE, plus in the book i read " Shannon miller my child my hero" it said that during the olympics she had developed AS STRESS FRATURE in her ankle! so her elbow and ankle were killing her! do you not know how much PAIN tht is? have you ever worked through any of that? she was NOT over any of her injurys yet.
@luv4cookie1 It is simply not possible for her to have a stress fracture in her ankle during the Olympics,s he would not have been able to do anything she did. Also her elbow was healed by the Olympics, training for the Olympics though she had to train through pain to get there.
@snofagun1814 She would never have medaled on bars in Atlanta. Dawes was better than her on bars after 93 and even she couldnt medal in Atlanta with her best routine in the finals. Khorkina, Chow, and Wengjing were clearly too good for Shannon to have beaten on this event. As good as this routine is there is nothing as spectacular or original as those 3 had in their routines, and her handstands are not as good either. Chow had form issues but the judges ignored them anyway.
she doesnt hit her handstands very well, but other then that great routine! im surprised she won the all around considering her problems with her last pass on floor
I think a free hip hecht with a full would be really cool, also! And you are both right! Shannon looked so good on the bars here! And remember, she was doing this routine with a torn stomach muscle!
That free hip hect with a half is great. I wish people would do more interesting tranistions like that now days. I would love to see someone attempt it with a full.
I love Shannon. She - a great gymnast! She is very elegant that uncommon for gymnasts the United States. I like it more than Nastia Liukin.

She only came to my gym for like an 2 or 3 hours before the gymnastics superstars tour but she was really nice
Poparatiz 2 years ago
why didn't she keep this??? this was her best and most difficult bar routine, she would have made finals and medaled with this one in atlanta
snofagun1814 2 years ago 2
This is a brilliant routine. Far more unique than the Atlanta one, which had more of a cookie cutter feel compared to this.

Her injury. She could barely train bars in 96 she was so injured.

She was injured by 96.She could hardly grasp the bar. The only competition she competed at healthy was 91. Even in 92 she was getting over an injury.

She was over her injury by Barcelona.

The hit handstands really only started coming into play in 2001 on. They wanted them before but the deductions weren't as big for not making them.
gropious3 3 years ago 4
yeah i know, i just wanted to point that out that this routine wouldnt score very well in like 2005 scoring
gymnasticsforever95 3 years ago
um most routines before 2005 wouldn't score well in the current system...
gymns411 3 years ago 2
She won the AA because Milosovici had mistakes on both bars and beam. Otherwise she would have lost it.
kerstenfanatic 3 years ago
This is probably her best & most difficult bar routine of her entire career. IMO
