His parents probably had people over one night, while he was off somewhere doing his own thing his parents were visiting with their guests. He thought can't be too impossible and then was off from there.

@C12830772 Well, these are all physicists, which for some reason Data has a fondness for. Personally, I'd remove Newton and Hawking (no offense, I'd love to meet him, but we are picking our top three people to play poker with) and put in Teddy Roosevelt and Niccolo Machiavelli. Roosevelt because, let's face it, he was an awesome guy (nature conservationist, boxer, bear hunter, and President to boot. Not to mention started a war AND fought it) and Niccolo because I want to try and bluff him.
Clearly you miss heard Data; he had said "three of" not just "the greatest".

Clearly you miss heard Data; he had said "three of" not just "the greatest".
Data was also showing a human trait while again unaware of it himself, in that he has personal favorites perhaps of persons in history. As stated by others, Mr. Hawking was also there on his own accord and volunteered for it.
You also must remember that the show has a cast, and writers also choose characters ALL viewers will recognize. And thus the more popular minds are chosen.
