@gwendolyniswendy "Omar writes everything but the lyrics." Yeah I herad Omar say that he passes the material to Cedric, and they are theonly people to hear and see the material. Before they can start recording or practicing.
Also, as for Omar's playing being 'outside', I do agree, and I think he intentionally guesses the notes to make it sound as random as possible. His technique is far from horrible though. If you require proof of this, watch the videos of him playing alongside Flea and John Frusciante.
His guitar wasn't out of tune. Omar started playing the song in the wrong key. LMFAO!!! and Juan the bass player was just reminding him what key its in, by slowly playing the riff.
@ryanlk i dont think omar would screw up which key its in, its hard to mess up keys as a guitarist, that riff is something you just memorize and you don't really think about what key its in, at least omar probably didn't, i mean he claims to not even know theory, i wonder how much he knows abt keys?
@canthinkverywell Just listen, he's playing in the wrong key. Not to mention you don't hear him change the tuning at all, and it never seems he bypasses his amp. "its pretty hard to mess up keys as a guitarist" I'm a guitar player, why is it hard to mess up what key your playing in? I'm sure he knows about keys, just like time signatures, I know he says he doesn't know theory but he must to some degree. Lets say he just started playing the 5th fret instead of the 3rd.
@ryanlk i play guitar too, ive never messed up what key im in before, that sounds like crazy talk to me. if you know which fret your supposed to use, you do it, unless you're improvising the key doesn't even have to be in your head. and i thought i saw him move the nobs, ill watch it again but i remember seeing him actually tune it when talking to juan
@canthinkverywell Also if u listen the entire riff is off a half step up not just one string, so you would think that it would be hist fault not the tuning.
aren't the roadies suppose to tune the guitars for the musicians? i know its one of their jobs its probably not even omar's fault. and if it is, its probably because he is high
@ravelength i think as long as the drummer has the ability to play what omar composes its not a big deal. deloused is the only album omar didnt completely write by himself so thats the only time you can really judge any1. even live, according to interviews, they dont improv as much as it looks like, its mostly stuff omar wrote ahead of time.
@ravelength i think any of mars volta's drummers outdo bonham. he's considered amazing because of triplets on the base-drum creating polyrhythms, pridgen, elitch, theodore, and all the in-between guys have done way crazier stuff
@canthinkverywell Bonham is famous because of his groove and the way he feels time. No one will remember theodore, pridgen, elitch 100 years from now, but every drummer will know who Bonham is, regardless of how much "better" theodore, pridgen, and elitch are.
@ryanlk theodore and pridgen have excellent groove, i havent heard enough elitch. whether or not people remember them or always talk about them wont change anything, the most famous pop artists currently out there suck ass. obviously cedric has a more impressive voice than justin bieber, maybe not as naturally-pop-accessible, but more impressive, but more people will know who justin bieber is years from now than cedric bixler.
@canthinkverywell Theodore has great groove, thomas isn't exactly a "pocket" player, also cedric's voice is always terrible live. Without vocal tuning cedric would never be able to do what u hear on the record.
@ryanlk he has a more naturally pretty or pop-accessible voice, but cedric is a better singer because he does things that take more effort. any fag can be born to sound like bieber (no offense to fags), but a voice like cedric's is something that takes work. and people will remember justin beiber for a longer time than cedric
@canthinkverywell Cedric's voice just isn't good. Just like Omar can't really play guitar. I think they are always the first to admit this. I give him credit for trying and he has decent range but I like his songwriting better then his voice. Also cedric's comments in between are epic.
@ryanlk i mean they work harder and do things nobody else could. if you really need a different example, the dude from coheed and cambria has an excellent voice, but people will remember and recognize the jonas brothers for a longer time than him. the point is, who's remembered doesn't reflect how great they are, and i could name different examples, as for cedric and omar, i love the way they play, and cedric's voice, even live, has NEVER sounded bad to me, and nobody can do what they do
@canthinkverywell "and cedric's voice, even live, has NEVER sounded bad to me".... enough said.. No one will remember the Jonas Bros. Coheed and Cambria blow.
@ryanlk every1 will remember the jonas brothers, everybody remembers the good-looking people with naturally pretty voices, not the actually hard-working talented musicians, and coheed and cambria is amazing. what other example do i need to give? does it really matter, i'd think you would get the point by now?
@canthinkverywell Do you gig regularly and play a couple hundred shows a year? I"m sure they fuck up here and there. Here's proof. I just learned this song in like 5minutes. Try playing the first time and move the notes where they should be 1 fret up. When they start over go back to playing where it should be. Think about how badly it would have be out of tune to be a half step off. That would be like tuning to E# instead of E. first start on the C and then second time start on B
@canthinkverywell I'm sure omar doesn't learn guitar by memorizing what fret it is on, i'm sure he's much more musical then that. This is why when I hear this riff I can listen to it and learn in it without even having to touch the guitar at all. All good musicians can do this, and I would imagine omar is the same way. Also do u think the beatles, rolling stones, pink floyd, King crimson, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Radiohead, etc...etc. are remembered because they are good looking?
@Petey0707 Name a volta song where his solo's aren't just Gibberish noodling? Pick anything? and its the same nonsense, he writes really good riffs, but his solos are terrible.
I'll agree that *most* of his solos are kind of out-there, but he's written some freaking face-melters too. Ever listen to Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt?
@samurai641 Yes, not a great solo, but more "inside" than most of his solos. His guitar is also drenched in reverb and delay in the solo to help out his technique. Or do you mean the breakdown? ITs really more of a riff than a solo
I disagree as well, ALL of it is coherent. ALL of its good ALL of it I (and many others) like. you are entitled to your opinion but you won't be able to convince me that ALL of it is good so.... end of discussion.
its seem like you won't admit that at least 1 solo is good. You will say "coherent" or "inside" but wont simply say any of his solos are good. He DOES have a lot of good solos. I can understand where you are coming from cause a lot of their stuff is off the wall and weird but not ALL of it is random notes. What might be random notes to you and me might be awesome to someone else. It's all according to taste. I respect your opinion though. I'm just glad you like the band! :)
@computervidsfromme Well vermicide is a good solo. Also, its not that his playing is outside, I like outside playing, but with Omar it feels dishonest, like he's guessing the notes, not hearing the notes in his head before he plays them. Search youtube for this video, Randy Brecker group live with Wayne Kranzt and watch Wayne play "outside" It feels like he's choosing to play outside rather than playing outside by guessing, Although video is pretty 80's out though! haha
Sorry it was so long till I replied. Anyway, yeah I will check it out. I think what makes Omars playing not register to you is he said for the first 2 albums he was trying to make his guitar sound like anything but a guitar. Said he was angry he couldn't communicate musically with other musicians as well without the guitar. On amputechture he said he made peace with his instrument. Note thats the album vermicide is on. I think his playing is slowly getting better with each album.
he was pretty out of tune lol
