Perhaps..just perhaps the greatest rock band of all time.Ignored in the U.S. after the prog movement of the 70's died, they went on to capture a world-wide audience of millions outside the U.S. and made their last cd in 2003 in Japan sounding as remarkable as ever. This band may never die,not for many more decades anyway.
@rematpac You realize that they are, after all, an ENGLISH rock band. And, whether or not they achieved acceptance in the states is rather immaterial. BTW, I saw them while living in U.S., at sold out NYC performances. Progressive rock stations such as NY's WNEW-FM flagship, "where rock live(d)" gave them plenty of air-play. Most significantly, were very popular in the UK. Band members moved on to other great groups. Classically trained rockers they were. Cheers!
@drmarosen Yes, I too heard them alot on WNEW in the seventies.
And I agree they were most certainly an English band. However, they were actually better received in the U.S. than in Britain. The critical reception for them over there was not generally glowing.
more like a demo version than an unplugged one. beautiful music. europe must have been an awesome time back then. far more polished and piercing than joni mitchell.
My introduction to Renaissnce came in the mid-70s when I heard this song on my college radio station, WUSB. Not only was I taken by the beauty of Annie's voice in general, but I was simply mesmerized by the trill she delivers on the word "and" in "...the green grass soft AND sweet...". I rushed out to purchase all the Renaissance albums that I could afford, and the band remains on my mp3 player today.
Yes this is truly a nice version of maybe their most known single song. I will allways return to Renaissance in my music listening! Songs that never dies!
I HAVE NO WORDS TO SAY HOW MUCH I LOVE HER AND HER VOICE. ANNIE MUSIC WITHOUT YOU CAN´T GO. I HOPE TOMORROW WILL MANY ANNIE BE BORN TO KEEP GOOD MUSIC LIVE.
I was in jr, high in '77- remembered catching "Renaissance" on the Midnight Special(the performance here). I remembered falling in love with their music(this was the era of "art rock"), and they REALLY fit this catagory! Annie Haslam's voice was incredible- great rage of emotions. For a collection of their best work, pick- up copies of their "1,001 Nights, Vols. 1 & 2"

I too love this song, this group, this spirit! I love to feel it lift my heart, and I carry this vibration with me....and to those who wish we were 'back then;' do not despair, for we can join to reawaken to this feeling, regain the happy optimism! Maybe some of you would like to explore this global Renaissance?
Thank you "2Old2Rock" and I know you are not too old!!!
The original band on Prologue and Ashes are burning was their best and most musical lineup. i saw their first tour in the US at the Academyof music in 1974 and they were incredible.
one of my most favorite songs of all time-------Annie is such a sweetheart---------this music is absolutely timeless unlike the crap thats out there today------my God ,what has happened to the music industry.thanks so much for the post
annies voice is superb. her brother michael who unfortunately died a few years ago was better though. she took her cue from him. he was managed by brian epstein and toured with the beatles for a couple of years. he was like boltons answer to elvis. love to see if anyone has any old postings of him. i only have him on video and dont know how to post it on here.
Great singer - knocks all those ten-a-penny warbling "never sing one note when 200 will do" modern singers into a cocked-hat. Love this - simple, direct, unembellished, in tune.
I'm 40, and my older brother had gotten me into them back in the late 70's/early 80's. I hadn't heard them in about 25 years, and all of a sudden floods of wonderful memories come back into my life. Thanks guys for having some gorgeous sounding songs
utube never ceases to amaze- if ye know who yere looking for, ye shall find- never thought id see her sing this live, in several different eras no less -she still looks smashing!! - signed, flabbergasted
THE Voice, period. Saw them 3 times, '77 through '80. Seeing 'Ocean Gypsy' with all of the dry ice roiling off of the stage, and poor Annie up there singing, barefoot....:-) Awesome voice, great band. Peace !!!
Had the pleasure of hosting Annie at the church I served where she did annual concerts during the Christmas season for several years. She recorded a CD at the church (Upper Tinicum, Upper Black Eddy, PA)singing songs she had always wanted to record. She now paints with the same flair, passion, and skill with which she sang. Great memories and she always took time to meet and greet after every concert
Her concerts became a Christmas tradition for me in the late 90's when she played at a church in Montclair, NJ. Always got to talk and take photos afterward. She's incredibly funny in concert, too.
i think it was at the capital theatre PeterMarquette1225 where someone yelled out "ilove you Annie" She responded saying you haven't seen me in the morning! Another said "I want to marry you" she replyed you want to come back to England with us...Then Jon Camp said we can fly 10 747's...They always had a great rapport with their fans. Personally, John Tout and Terry Sullivan were most approachable. Did ride back to N.Y. with Michael and friend after a gig in Boston! Thats another story.
this is a really nice song, and i much approve of the ethos style and positivity of it, but it still slightly annoys me that most people probably think this was the original group. that was formed by keith relf in 1969 and included his sister jane. they made a great LP and when relf died reformed briefly as illusion in 1977.maybe they sanctioned this renaissance to take over their name and style ? who knows.
no it was an evolution that started in 1972 with the release of Prologue! By 1977 Renaissance as we know them had already released 6 albums including the double live at carnegie hall!
The original band members left of their own volition, and then the classic lineup coalesced. I think Jim McCarty was the only holdover, with his last contribution being Things I Don't Understand for Turn of the Cards.
A rare acoustic performance- before joining Renaissance, Annie Haslam actually took professional/classical voice coaching on sugestion of a friend who overheard her singing with the radio one day and was amazed with what she heard! As a result, she naturally fit the bill as a lead vocalist for a group with a classical-rock flavor.
annie haslam is by far the best woman voice i've ever heard....it's superb, it's perfect.the sounds grow inside her so beautifully, it almost feels that she is entirely made of sounds.
I have quite a few of them on vinyl too. I played "Ashes Are Burning" so much you could practically see through the record! I've upgraded to CDs but I still miss those 12 inch album covers.
@2old2Rock I have listened to this LP on vinyl and CD and the vinyl BLOWS the CD away in dynamic range and warmth. Analog recording is better quality by far.
