I don't doubt the math these guys did, but in a video I saw of some guys setting other records for dropping like.. 250 feet, much smaller than this, the cliffs they went off of seemed a lot higher than this one..

I thought the same thing, however, most huge jumps are planned with cameras positioned for optimal effect. Look carefully and you can see a puff of snow as he lands at 4:59. He launched at 4:55 for approximately a 4 second freefall. Accelerating at 10m/s/s means he falls roughly 10 meters the first second, 20m in second #2, 30m during 3rd second and 40m during the 4th second. 10+20+30+40 = 100m = 333 feet. I trust their calculation more than this very rough demonstration in physics.

Usually the scout the landing and make sure the snow is very deep. They don't have to land any certain way. I have seen people jump and land on their head and survive, they just get buried in the snow. He was lucky that there weren't any rocks there.

There's a lot of planning. You wear weighted and padded backpacks and scope landing and take off. You need the right kind of deep snow to cushion the impact and you have to make sure you land slightly back on your skis rather than forward because you can not ski out of a jump like this. There's a learning curve. You start small. And hey, there's always a certain amount of luck involved but you don't wanna rely on it, that's for sure

yeah, normally the snow would be insanely deep so you can land anyway and not hurt yourself. and the bindings on his skis would have been pretty loose so he wouldn't have broken his legs or whatever
