This hits it on so many levels - I first heard this during a "trip" in the late 60s...and this version captures the heart and soul of it. The original was from "Music of the High Renaissance in England". Does the group do "Hard by a Crystal Fountain"?
We're studying this in my high school music theory class. This song is super amazing. I like the word painting, as well as the references to Roman mythology.
@weiming10 Latmos Hill was the hill in ancient Rome where Vesta's temple was located. Vesta was the Roman goddess of the hearth, and Diana, who is later mentioned in the song, was the Roman goddess of the hunt. Vesta was the Roman equivalent to the Greek goddess Hestia and Diana was the Roman equivalent to Artemis. At the end of the song, when the swain praise Orianna, who was the Roman goddess of the dawn. Orianna was referring to Queen Elizabeth, as her reign was a time of triumph in England.
having a test on this and you tube has it all that my music teacher is teaching about. I like finding the ones that have alot of comments so i can read them and try to understand the music better, because i also have to write papers about each one... :p but i totally dig this movement and i cant wait for the test
haha this is funny most of the comments on here are relating to a music appreciation class! I'm in one too and I have a test on this tomorrow haha great tool to study for! this is the best version I have heard of this song and I am now in love with it! :)
Really excellent. It shows the universality of Weelkes genius that this should be performed in Indonesia. Viewers may know that this was Weelkes' contribution to the Triumphs of Oriana, published in 1601 by Thomas Morley in honor of Queen Elizabeth I.
a little slow but really nice balance and blend! :)
check out the parksingers singing this song! they sound great!
a little tip..... at the end when singing the long lives.....sing the 'long lives' really loud and the rest of the sentence very quiet because then you get a chorus of long live long live long live..... sounds cool :)
As Vesta was from Latmos hill descending, she spied a maiden queen the same ascending, attended on by all the shepherds swain, to whom Diana's darlings came running down amain. First two by two then three by three together, leaving their goddess all alone, hasted thither, and mingling with the shepherds of her train with mirthful tunes her presence entertain. THen sang the shepherds and nymphs of Diana Long live fair Oriana!
That was simply wonderful, Im writing a paper on music appreciation while I was listening to this. When I finished the song, I looked back over my work, and I was stunned by how emotional it was! Thats the power of a excellent muse!
ow! r u a chorister too? Nice to know from fellow indonesian. thank u. Glad you like our performance. We're an independent group, consisting a group of people who love singing a bit too much :)) anything else u wanna know, just ask away :)
I played this song over and over again back in the days when there were 33 1/3 LPs and I really loved it. Now I'm 48 years old and I just did a search for the song and I was absolutely delighted to hear your rendition. ^__^
I am currently studying madrigals in my music appreciation class. We are analyzing the various examples of "word painting." This madrigal is a great example of word painting and declamation!
WOW! What a magnificent performance! And what a wonderful choice of repetoire! It's a great madrigal but not often performed. You did it beautifully! Thankyou!
this is really good, but to hear this song in a faster tempo and sang by all guys, look at the vid of this song by the King's Singers. Amazing.

my favorite part is the "first two by two, then three by three" [then they something i don't know] and then it's "leaving their goddess all alone"
our teacher taught us about word painting a week ago with this song.
