My thoughts on this subject are that it was a pretty bad idea to start whaling again. The loss of goodwill from people will lead to losses in revenue from whale watching and tourism in generall. Wich will far outweigh the financial benefits of whaling.
However I think this whole discussion is absurd. I don´t know the exact number but last year it was around 20 whales that we killed. The whaling is being closely monitered. Theres no way we will make them extinct.
that statistic was used by japanese delegates from the international whaling commission and that stat is from 1993. they stopped using this statistic in 2004 because it is considerably less than 100 000+ mink whales. so far there is no new estimate.i just think whaling isn't hunting and is cheap bullshit to do that to a whale.

Actual whales are more like humans, they are intelligent and very emotional animals. A lot of species live together and can tell individuals apart through "voices", "songs" which they communicate. They mourn for their dead, and mothers have even been documented to starve themselves if a calf dies. And like humans they reach sexual maturity at around 13 years, vary species to species.

No... the whales are not a problem to the fishing industry. If yo noticed, that was a baleen whale. The problem with the fishing industry is one caused by humans! We have overfished and depleted our fish stocks worldwide. We have also fished in ways that are very damaging to the environment, meaning that populations cannot recover well before we fish again. excuse me! iceland has had to cut down the yearly fishing quota of cod down to 2/3 of what it used to be (cod is our main export of fish) because the fish doesn't have enough to eat and therefore has decreased in numbers...
and because of this decrease in quota a lot of people are getting unemployed or already are and the icelandic fisherman, which was ones 40% of iceland's employment, is now dying out.. cod and whales are dependent on the same food in the sea but the whales seem to be more capable of getting it and obviously there is a connection between those two... killing 200 whales is not much and to comparison the USA kills about 2000+ every year and that number does not include those hunt illegally.
most people dont mind eating cows, pigs, chickens etc. its because they're farmed animals not wild and theres a hell of alot of them.
many species of whales have been driven to near extinction so to take this majestic animal out of the sea that has probabally been there for 50+years is just a depressing joke. whales take some of the longest time to reproduce in the animal kingdom (one calf every few years) so to say they re produce like no bodys business is a bit short sighted!

European fisheries slaughtered millions of whales for blubber, which caused whales to be endangered in the first place.
Now Japan wants to hunt maybe 20 or 30 whales for food because of their culture, and there's a global uproar. This is hypocrisy at its greatest.

Well, it may be, as it is with many other species, but I really doubt it. It sounds as if whale populations are still not that strong. That would be the biggest problem. Eventually, some will have to be culled, but is that now? I haven't seen anything that says so.

your statement is unreasonable due a number of reasons a)whales are wild animals and cows are raised (in a similar matter as other food sources) b)there are no wild populations of cows, so population numbers aren't a concern. c)there are no global regulations of cow slaughter d)people are dying around the world, but what do you propose we do about it, no one is saying that human death woldwide is justified, but supporting whales doesn't imply wanting to kill people.

No... the whales are not a problem to the fishing industry. If yo noticed, that was a baleen whale. The problem with the fishing industry is one caused by humans! We have overfished and depleted our fish stocks worldwide. We have also fished in ways that are very damaging to the environment, meaning that populations cannot recover well before we fish again. Saying that whales are the problem with the fishing industry is an ignorant and misguided excuse.

Killing innocent animals is absolutely no justification in terms of jobs or employment. Humans are so advanced that we have created economics. The world has millions of oppurtunities for employment. I think killing whales and justifying it for jobs and employment is a lazy and weak excuse. There are somany opprtunities. excuse me! iceland has had to cut down the yearly fishing quota of cod down to 2/3 of what it used to be (cod is our main export of fish) because the fish doesn't have enough to eat and therefore has decreased in numbers...

and because of this decrease in quota a lot of people are getting unemployed or already are and the icelandic fisherman, which was ones 40% of iceland's employment, is now dying out.. cod and whales are dependent on the same food in the sea but the whales seem to be more capable of getting it and obviously there is a connection between those two... killing 200 whales is not much and to comparison the USA kills about 2000+ every year and that number does not include those hunt illegally.

many species of whales have been driven to near extinction so to take this majestic animal out of the sea that has probabally been there for 50+years is just a depressing joke. whales take some of the longest time to reproduce in the animal kingdom (one calf every few years) so to say they re produce like no bodys business is a bit short sighted!
