It's completely irrelevant whether the film is made using film, CGI, actors or animated characters or somewhere between all of these things. The only thing that ultimately matters is whether the effect is achieved and people watching are able to feel the magic and connect with whatever vision the artists were trying to put across.
I like it all the BETTER because it's made using computer graphics. This is a real tour de force in both technology and artistry and emotional connect. So what do you care what the medium is? This is the 21st century and the dawn of the independent digital film. I can do simple machinima. I'm in awe of people who can do this.
@azgeogirl Yeah, I actually read it ... and I would dare to say its a film... and I agree with you there are many CGI elements... but I have a different opinion about the use of CGI. I think it is another way of showing things that cant be showed and the director wants to offer in it's film. Like you mentioned... it's just an opinion (: but hey! both of us say this is art (which it is...) we just differ in semantics ( and I hate grammar classes) lol...
@Timin: I had no idea how much of it was CGI upon seeing the original. Knowing how much CGI went into it only makes it MORE amazing in my opinion. Technology is technology, it's what the artist does with it that matters. This short film is an astounding execution of an equally amazing concept.
Insane. The final product is a gorgeous piece of art. I love how this shows the incredible amount of work that goes into some of these higher concepts.
All that work... the first 28 seconds or so of this video - just to make a shot that lasts only a few seconds. I love these making-of videos. It's so hard to realize all of the work that goes into making a film until you see all of the individual layers. Very cool.
@azgeogirl Would you not call a Pixar movie a film because there's CGI in it? I think this has more soul than most of the junk out nowadays people would call 'films'. I would argue that if you didn't realize it was CGI while you were watching 'Nuit Blanche', you shouldn't be disappointed because it never detracted from your viewing experience.
@timin I love Pixar movies! They are definitely technically amazing, but different than effects used in film (think Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.). Perhaps this is a matter of semantics, but "film" denotes a certain level of artistry without the use of computer imagery, in my opinion. I'm not saying there is anything at all wrong with this video, but maybe digital productions should be in their own category from traditional film?
@azgeogirl you sound like a professor of "film" who has never made one. It must be a good life writing books and opining about other people's work, about how they're not quite up to your standards. why don't you make something and show us your standard?
@numbuh1bassclar Obviously there is quite a bit of cgi but I thought there might be some bit of non-computer effects in there as well. I have every right to state my *opinion*. (And in case you missed that lesson in grade school, and opinion is neither right nor wrong.)
@azgeogirl It kind of looks like YOU missed that lesson in grade school!!! Opinions can be & are RIGHT or WRONG! Ex: It's my opinion that Human life is worthless. The opinion is absolutely wrong! You have no idea what U R saying! it's my opinion that feelings can be & are right or Wrong as well! I feel hurt that no one loves me. Well, your opinion is wrong it makes your feeling automatically wrong. Someone does love you! So before you talk down to someone, make sure your point is valid
@Donnamariemay Maybe you should open up a dictionary and check out the definition of the word opinion ("a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.") And why is it ok for you to talk down to me? Hypocritical much?
Oh hell yes, now THAT is how you use a green screen! This is just beautiful!
Thank God for you guys at Spy Films; without creative vision like this the film industry is in danger of becoming stale. I only hope you get more of the kind of backing you did for D9 so your vision can feed more into the mainstream.
Irado!

I was disappointed to see how much of this is cgi, but I can appreciate the artistry of the video (sorry, but I won't call this a film).

@infernoacid I totally agree! It is a beautiful piece of art. Computer generated art, not film art.

@azgeogirl Uhhh.... I think if you didn't know that most of this was CGI, then you shouldn't be the one to judge it's legitimacy as a film.

The only thing I can't quite figure out, is the intention behind the face compositing and shifting of their mouths towards the end...
