It was June 1984, I was 20 years old on a boat sailing North across the South Atlantic after a 4 month tour in the Falkland Islands, on my way home. On the radio, was music coming from Frankie goes to Hollywood, The Art of Noise and Simple Minds, and I thought grrrrreat!!!!! This is the music of the future. This is what I'm coming home to.
And from then on, I always thought things can only get better, until who should come and spoil everything but STOCK, AITKEN AND FUCKING WATERMAN!!!!!
I am going to be honest, I never even heard this song until last night, and when I did I was blown away. This song has an awesome keyboard hook, meaningful lyrics, and still rings true today. So what if they were a gay act, you'd have to be narrow-minded to give a shit about that. This is a great song, much better than some of the crapola dominating the airwaves today. Definitely a perfect addition as DLC for Rock Band 3 sometime, I hope they do it!
Yeah we would need this so much. War, Two Tribes and Warriors are great songs. And now even 9 years in war we still have no single song about what is happening in Iraq.
@llothar68 To my mind, George Michael was the ONLY artist to make a public stand against the unjust unlawful war and look what happened to him. Where are today's protest songs? Why no comment from metalheads and rappers? Where's the spirit of rebellion? The silence is deafening.
@TheQuiet1 You're right. Well said. Today seems to have no protest songs. In the eighties it seemed that was the last great era with protest songs. Nik Kershaw was another who did a lot of protest songs (ie: I Won't Let the Sun Go Down On Me)... I just can't picture the likes of what's on offer today having the guts to do anything like that.
Cloverfield911 - I remember when you knew nearly every song on a "Now That's What I Call Music" album. I don't know hardly any of them on the latest albums!
This should have been No.1. It only just got into the top 20, but it would probably still outsell today's No.1 as single sales were very much higher back in the eighties!
Big sound - great electro/rock track. This was the best track on the Liverpool album. This is a bit like Europe's "Final Countdown", but this has more meaningful lyrics. Nice video, too!
Man what a song, you can relate this song to any genre, you can make a heavy metal song just by making guitars a cell different! Pity, where is this music today? Buried in the minds of happy people who lived in the '80. and now have 48 and so and 4 children....cccc...
awesome song...i wish i could find an instrumental version of the album version (or at least a version with lead vocals removed) so I could sing it at a karaoke with some updated/altered lyrics that pertain to how the hunger for oil is the main reason behind the iraq war. Check out Rychard Head and their "American Brand Dammaged Goods" plus "Banjo Bob, The Topless Knob" videos right here on youtube...yes, thats Rychard Head with a 'y' in Rychard.
I've covered several Frankie goes to hollywood songs instrumentally.. i did "Relax", "Welcome to the pleasuredome" and right now i'm working on one of their songs called "Black night white light" ... never recorded any vocals on 'em though.
It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since this came out. Still sounds fresh and ballzy. One of my all time faves! After all these yeasr it still makes me get up and dance and play air drums like a lunatic :):) Hi to all Frankie fans. The vid is spot on. Big song, big images.
fantastico! i always thought Liverpool was a neglected classic album. and this video is a revelation, i am a cartoon/warhol/communist poster art junkie and just got fixed good and proper.

You are right...no tunes for the conflict.
