I'm sure the Educators got their idea from a German movie called "The Edukators" or "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei", in which poor, struggling youths prank the wealthy, heartless bourgeois as a form of social justice/mild terrorism. It's a great movie, so check it out if you get the chance!
