  • I could post this comment on any one of Gordon's songs....but I choose this one not only because it's sweet, but because of the white suit ;) This man is a national treasure.....unbelievable talent

  • salute

  • does anyone know which album this song is on??? can't find it on itunes....thanks..

  • Of all of his songs, this is my favorite. A superb example of an extended metaphor. He is so good it's scary.

  • @mandospence ...you are absolutely right he is the Ultimate best singer songwriter ever to have graced this earth. The only singer I listen to I never tire of hearing his music..and John Denver does not compare to Gordy at all and never will. I am sorry he is the very best! @nylawyer..yes he is GOD...lol

  • I'm looking for gordon lightfoot "salute"

  • Let's all understand something... Gord is God. That is all there is to say. There is nobody like him and those who know have been graced by that.

  • Great vinyl!

  • Gordon just keeps getting better over time!

  • A tremendous musician.

  • Great tune, by a superlative artist at his best.

  • what is the name of this song?

  • Always a great singer and writer, I have listened to him for years and years, In my own opinion in the ranks with Elvis and Roy Orbison, what a good bunch of guys, with beautiful voices.

  • @MrOldcountrylover

Totally agree. He's an amazing singer. I think he's actually better overall than Elvis. I think in the folk music world I'd say J. Denver was the best singer of them all though. the Big O ranks among the best in rock/pop for sure.

  • We love you Gord. Canada is so beautifully represented in so many of your songs. Thankyou for the post icepick141.

  • Thanks for posting this. I haven't heard this since I heard him perform this at the Kennedy Center in Washington ca. 1987, but the melody has always stuck with me. It's so nice to find it again after all these years.

  • Gord is a beautiful writer yes one of the best

  • The album this is from was quite good, a "new" GL if you will that I think many people didn't quite get..

  • GL IS the best!!!

  • An artist's homage to his Canadian folk roots. Lightfoot is among the best.

  • I'd love to find the original chords of this song.

  • Hey My Knotty Pine I love you Paula..from your Maple on the right

    Rocket

  • I'm pining for you , my mahogany evergreen ! Your are the the love in my soul from the woods & stems of all time. I love you , my forest of treasures...No -one shall ever cut our passion down..

    333

  • simply professionel ,

Gorden is the best Songwriter of the World ! !

  • I was listening to this song..................arriving Grand Canyon,Arizona .

  • The chord structured with matching voice intonations and lyrics are so harmonious and right.

  • Gord is the man, saw him in NYC on 6/27, was backstage with him after the show with other fans, he never tires of performing and is such a humble person for all of his fame, was about the 50th or so show I've seen of his. Still enjoys greeting his fans.

  • Wish I had known -- I would have gone back there myself. . . . been listening to him for 40 years!

  • You needed backstage passes to stay in the theater, otherwise he usually greets fans on his way out of the hall , they hang by the exit door, in the case of Town Hall, the big black double doors all the way to the right of the entrance doors.

  • Knotty Pine is my favorite Lightfoot tune, and it was a tough choice because there are so many. He personifies Canada...

  • I have several of his album 33 RPM LP's from the 70's, a couple of tapes from the 80's and several CD's from the 90's. I been lucky enough to have also seen Gordon in concert 3 or 4 times in concert His voice started to go a little in the late 80's. He is still the consummate professional and ultimate troubadour. He is well worth going to see at 70 years old and always has a great show!

  • Have seen him in concert in the 80's and 90's and 00's and I think his voice has mellowed with age like fine wine.

  • Nope, they definitey broke the mold after Gord....just couldn't have two people on the planet that talented....

He was a guest host awhile back on the "Canadian Idol" show. The contestants did a tribute to him singing "Canadian Railroad Trilogy"......A Youtube member posted it. Type "Lightfoot Canadian Idol" into search browser, it should be your first return if you care to view.

Fantastic talent by the contestants and a heartwarming tribute....

  • god just don't make'm like this anymore..too bad

  • Gordon is Gold! I have always loved his music. What a songwriter, poet & singer. He was quite a babe back in the day. Still can't get enough!

  • Good god this guy is great.

  • He is one classy cat. Love the time signature in this song.

  • Don't speak ill of Gordon Lightfoot. He's one of the greatest singers and one of the greatest songwriters of all time, independently of each other. Please be respectful. He can perform and record until the end of the world.

  • @mandospence - God Bless the Last True Troubadour - Deepest humble bow to this Man of The Mountains- Legend & Artist & Poet& Statesman of Canada

  • This song epitomizes everything that's grea about Canadian culture and Lightfoot and his deep poetic sense.

  • he looks like my 7th grade guitar teacher! brilliant songwriter! my favorite!

  • Love The NorthShore Knott Pines : )

    Rocket

  • At the top of his game, to put it mildly--reminding me why I knocked people down in record stores while buying every one of his albums when they first came out.

Oh, and God bless the YouTube people for this whole idea.

  • FUCK YOU

    Lightfoot is god

  • I have listen to this song about 10 times and I want to listen to it again. It's deep, very deep.. Love it!

  • Why is this song NOT a classic? I cannot find it anywhere.

  • classic Lightfoot in his prime

  • On of the most beautiful male singing voices ever.

  • Gord's Gold... Gord's God!!

  • Thank you for uploading this video. I remember watching this show....22 years ago..wow time flies!

  • I love this vid. :)

  • Indeed, this guy is top teir..Dylan said wen he listens to a Lightfoot song,he wishes it could go on forever.

I read last year, Gord said all he's been tryin' to do,he's whole career,is learn how to play the guitar.Man,what a humble dude.

He's a class act in a dog eat dog buisness.

  • Lovely! Thanks so much for posting!

  • Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver.

  • Be still, my heart.

  • Gord is a huge influence on me as a songwriter!

  • Gordon is great!

  • Gordon Lightfoot is the man. His lyrics are the best. Smooth, soothing voice, mean guitar

  • i lived in hope ,bc for 2 months back in 01.

great times.i am from wisconsin dells,wi

  • Yay- WI Dells, cool place, had alot of fun there, Noah's Ark etc...

  • Absolutely brillant! Mr. Lightfoot has written and performed so many incredible songs it's hard to pick a favorite. Lightfoot Fans chk out PP& Marys cover of Early Morning Rain here on YouTube posted by cskwan for more brilliance.

  • what a guy

  • It is one of his best. Thanks for setting my nogin straight.

  • Love this song/video>i thought i had discovered the 'Mystery of Morning Wood' because it initially sounded like 'Naughty Pine'!! lol

  • Very funny....;=0

  • Nice song, nice voice. One of the best ever. 'On Ya Gordon!

  • Gordon Lightfoot has been favorite for 40+ years and this is one of my very favorites. So pretty!!! I have it on video but my VCR is broken..now I can listen to it on YouTube.

Clever lyrics! Thank you for posting! :D

  • did anyone ever listen to the song he sang in the movie Harry Tracey!!! (The hole in the wall gang)!! one of his dearest songs and rare ,hard song to find!!!! lt me know if u do

  • My Love For You written by Les Pouliot in fact

  • @srxsteve - Your comment about the song Lightfoot sang in "Harry Tracey" is from two years ago, but I wanted to let you know that it's now posted by TheDesertrat on YouTube, in case you hadn't found it. As icepick141 mentioned, it's called "My Love for You." So glad you mentioned it as now I've found a new song to hear GL sing so beautifully.

  • @srxsteve - Oh, sorry, "My Love for You" was posted by TheDesertrodent.

  • The facial expressions that he has while singing have always been there...It's his style...I've seen him in concert more times than I can remember - he has ALWAYS done that. He's an amazing musician either way...

    HOWEVER, he was/is a smoker...

  • I am a professional musician(pedal steel)and the best singers I have ever worked with were ALL heavy smokers--dont know why, but cigarettes seem to have a positive effect on many singers--ages and matures the voice,or something--I wouldn't take up smoking to improve my voice, though!

  • @NanceH62 i read somewhere that he suffered facial nerve damage due to heavy alcoholism

  • @srxsteve Not true...he had Bell's Palsy

  • However, saying that he "shouldn't be performing" might be taking it a bit too far! I still greatly enjoy listening to him perform; it's not hard to take the best of what he still has to offer and combine it with great memories of what once was...

  • Wolfgar, I'm a huge Gordon fan, but I agree that his voice seemed a bit strained at times in this song. He DOES hit some wonderful subtle notes at the end of most verses, however. AND it's certainly a sweet song. I don't think there's anything wrong with a bit of objective criticism/discussion.

  • What a beautiful, nuanced performance. Lightfoot's almost indescribably fine voice can transport his lyrics into places that are felt in the soul. Thank you for ALL your music.

  • Comment removed

  • Your a musician correct? Where is your work on youtube or anywhere else?

I saw him in Nashville, guess what he still stains neck muscles, apparently the 27 years you have been listening and not paying attention, it has and always will be part of his style as an artist.

Your comments about his age , I'll pay whatever ammount to go see him again, even if he is 75 .

If he has it in himself to continue touring then I as a fan will get to continue seeing a legend.

  • Comment removed

  • It's still a great performance from a great artist! He has given much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just enjoyed it. That's what Gordon would want...I am certain of it. :)

  • Comment removed

  • I think he may be a lifelong smoker of tobacco and perhaps alcohol consumption complicates that...

    No good for anyone's throat.

As for his voice being 'shot' - BULLSHIT

He is a 68 year old man and one of the greatest voices put to record and if you ever loved the music - and the man who wrote it then

you outta be embarrassed to say he ought not to be performing.

  • I saw Gordon this summer in Eugene, Oregon.

He's 68, not washed up. That only happens when you die. Your bigotry base on someone gaining increased warmth, repartee, and soulfulness in a performance as happens with older people as smart, sensitive and alive as Gordon Lightfoot is repugnant.

I deeply enjoyed his preformance, and I get angry at throw away myopia as shallow as yours'.

I hope he preforms for a long time to come.

  • It is true that Gord's voice is not what it once was. I'd decided to stop going to his concerts a few years ago because of it but what a loss.

Recently he performed at PSU. I didn't go. Friends who did told me of the near-religious experience of everyone in the auditorium. He stayed around and talked to a group of loyal fans without regard for the clock after the concert.

We all know what his voice once sounded like. Once we were ALL young.

He is a diamond. Diamonds are forever.

  • Thanks for posting some Rare Footage!

  • HOT DAMN be easy on the rouge.

  • It's bad television makeup that's all.

  • been a music fan and collector for 40 years now and they dont come much better than this

    FANTASTIC

  • GORDS DA MAN!

  • I accidentally pressed the poor comment button by mistake. Sorry. GORDS DA MAN FOR SURE! I saw him in Grand Praire, Tx this month. I could hardly wait. It was over before I knew it. I could have sat there all night. I don't care how he looks or how he sounds, he's still got it. He's like a fine wine....better with age. He looks damn good at 70. I can't wait till he comes round again.

    Angie

  • Without him music would just be music,he has made it a story to hand down forever.-J

  • Great song, really shows off the voice.

  • Gordy Rocks - Great Story Teller

  • Oh...my...gosh!!! I love this so much! His clever lyrics. Gords the best ever! Thank you Gordon for years of beautiful songs!

  • What a treat to have this song on video! Gordon is one of my all time favorite singer songwriters, and we've been fortunate to see him in concert many times. Can I be an honorary Canadian?

  • Back in 1976, Gordon lightfoot was on my boat for a party. He liked Meyers rum and bitter lemon to drink. What a great guy, he had a unique sense of humor. He played my Martin guitar and played all my favorites!

  • Awesome!

  • Man...I just keep watching this one again and again. What guitar is he playing here?

  • It's a Martin dreadnought of some kind. I know that Martin had a limited edition Model D-18GL made to Gordon's specs that they were producing about seven years ago. They probably don't make it anymore, though. They still make their model D-18 guitar with several variations to it, though.

  • Wow what a great video. Thanks for this. Sure would love to have this concert on DVD.

  • Dary Farrow, a beautiful song. Also, would like to see "Changes", one of my fav Lightfoot songs. Thanks for posting and allowing "us" to view one of Canada's greatest singer/songwriter. Peace from Texas:)

  • Gordon hat echtes Talent, warum hatte er solange eine Pause gemacht? Weiß das jemand?

  • it does has one of the nicest little acoustic riffs ever

  • Wow ... I haven't seen this since the TV broadcast. Thanks.

  • A great job! I normally don't care for this song on the CD, but he did a wonderful performance on the acoustic guitar. He looked like he was in pain throughout the song, though. What is up with that?...

  • I would say that song must have some history in it...

  • One of my favorite Gordon songs,

    echoes in my mind

    fills my soul

    gives me joy

    caresses me with fond memories

    *sheri*

  • To leave things as they stand is my advice,

    She's been good to me,

So I tend to go there when I can...

    Incredible insight to relationships.

  • Darcy Farrow on tape portion w/ Linda Ronstad...

  • This is awesome!

  • Hi icepick ... may I assume you have the whole show ? If you you do, Darcy Farrow and River Road would be nice ... :o) Best Don Barone

  • contact lightfoot249 he has the VHS
