@LargeRedRizla because New Line (currently owned by TimeWarner) released it in 2000. Atari also released a ported portable VG version of the Super Nintendo classic, Dungeons and Dragons: Eye of the Beholder, for Game Boy Advance in 2002.
New Line released a movie version which was loosely based off the popular cartoon of the same which is loosely based off the #1 board game RPG of the same name.

@infinitevitality OMG You never saw it! It was great! Better than the video game, which was the first time we saw graphics that cool. There were so many great episodes. You have to see, if you haven't already. "The last Illusion" is a favorite and "The Box" and "Day of the Dungeon Master" really show why these poor kids have such a bad time getting home. To come that close..., well you'll just have to watch. LOL
This is one of the all time greats of the 80's it was pretty hardcore at times! no cartoon these days would dare tackle the issues this did! I wish they had finished it up rather than scrapping the last episode ( what were they thinking?)

@TheJboy88 It was sort of ended for the fans. A final episode was written, which was to lead to season 2. In it, they get home but also get the ability to go back and forth from home to the DandD world. The season 2 dungeon master was to be a woman and the season would have had an Asian them.
It was cancelled before that, but you can read the script online.
The United States dvd has that unmade episode done as an audio play and is called "Reqium."

I loved this show, but it did seem to me that Dungeon Master TOYED with them a lot. I didn't think he was really trying to get them home. So I started thinking maybe there was some goal they each needed to reach, some self growth before they could make it home. I was sorry they never had a final episode that did that.
I wonder if Hank ever tapped Sheila. I imagine he'd have to have hit Diane too. I can't see the other 2 guys getting any ever. The one thing worse than that question has to be the fact I still remember all their names 25+ years later. omgwtf.
Anyone else realize the weapons are kinda cheap? I mean, a bow that doest even shoot real arrows, a log, a hat, a shield (not a weapon), a cloak, and a giant glow stick. On top of that they get a frikkin mentally retarted, all thanks to the midget in red :D

@corduroy99 Okay the animation did have some comically bad moments but for me this was far superior because the characters felt far more plausible I was really hooked by the storyline thats almost unheard of in weekly cartoon series and for me Venger is probably one of the greatest foes ever, I did love Thundercats but I got really invested in the characters and story of this, the Dragons graveyard is the best example, really powerful stuff it really felt like their actions had consequences.
Am I the only one who thinks there should be a classic cartoon channel on sky, MASK, transformers, centurians, the racoons, thunder cats, heathcliff, dogtian, bravestar, count duckula, trapdoor, rude dog and the dweebs, fantastic max,..... I could go on. Fuck me, it'd get millions of viewers!!!
Love this show. Own the series and I'm glad to be part of a special time watching animation in the 80's. The stories and themes still hold up and the animation has more detail and flow then even some of the newer shows that are out. I wish Television would get back to this level of art. I guess production cost would be to high. Also make no mistake, this is art without a doubt.
@mdentari The production costs would not be the issue, its not commercial enough. We are told to like very slick productions that have no substance.
Doctor who is a good example. Old doctor who often had awful acting from some characters and sets that were in danger of falling apart, but the mood of it was much better than new Doctor who, but now its slick and shiny and people like the style of substance.
ok climbing up the cliff while Tiamat attacks?? I call no way!! the penalties would've been way too high for any of them, even with rope climbing skill, to attempt it, and then Eric blocking the fireball from venger with his sheild even though he's still on the rope, again, would've needed at least three nat 20's in a row....I just totally geeked out there didn't I?
I miss unique toons, toys, & cereals. I wish Hub, WGN Retro, & Cartoon Network would get blocks of these to air on Weekend Mornings. Imagine the ratings they could get. All the retro fans now have children in their lives. We watch then the kids in our lives would watch. Basic Cable Networks would make money on shows they don't pay to produce now. Why can't they understand that? Anybody know what I mean? Thumbs up, & email the idea to the networks repeatedly. Indifference achieves nothing.

@Kuhrimoo I'm not sure I ever saw the premier. Did he really? I thought he was a good guy. EXCEPT he did seem to TOY with them a lot!!! Always the promise of home around the corner. How many episodes did he say this could be the key to your returning home and they never get anywhere near a portal? VARLA was one. Great episode, but broken promise.
Fun fact, actually: Cavalier, Barbarian and Acrobat (Thief-Acrobat to be precise) were all some of the first class variants developed for AD&D and were published shortly before this show started production. Actually, the "weird" class here is wizard, as there were only "Magic Users" in AD&D, not wizards.
The were also soon to be reprinted in the Unearthed Arcana supplement for AD&D, and TSR was likely trying to breed interest in their 'new' character classes by using them in this show.
Also, I'm pretty sure that acrobat was a class at one point or other in the genesis of D&D, but whether before or after the cartoon, I can't recall.
Also, "Venger, the force of Evil!"? Sure, just because his face is trapped in a perpetual snarl, has black membranous wings and a horn, and wears a skirt(?!), he must be eeeevil. Thanks, DM. Never mind that he single-handedly cares for his infirm mother and gives generously to charity. PURE EVIL.
I'm not good with my D&D rules, but isn't that why they call him the Dungeon MASTER? ie. he dictates how the game flows. If DM says Venger is evil, Venger is evil.

As much as the DM is always right, and on the other hand moral ambiguity in characters is preferable (to me) than black-and-white morality, the DM that straight up tells their players that a character "is evil" is doing a pretty sucky job. At least make a (hidden) intuition roll or something, before saying "YOU THINK he's killing babies because he likes it, not because it's his job".

BTW fun fact some of the characters in this show appear on Portraits in the Adventurers Mart in Baldurs Gate 2 :) This may be a bit of a conicidence but the thief in this reminds me of Imoen from the Baldurs Gate series :)
I read that the network censorship (as well as the ever present parents groups) forced a huge number of changes on the original script as well as the character themselves. Eric,for example,wasn't originally the asshole he was in the series. He initially was going to be an insecure kid that slowly matures into leadership. But his character was then portrayed as the one that goes against the group just to preach to kids the maxim of "The group is always right; the complainer is always wrong".

@philiptwood except that dungeon master doesn't talk like he was smoking weed, but usually speaks in riddles which is always funny to see the caviler throw a fit.(which is piratically every episode)

This was one of my favourite shows as a kid.
The only downside to it was that they never resolved their being in the othjer world.
They never went home.
But then again, if they did resolve it after all this time it would probably be an underwhelming ending.
Better perhaps to leave it open-ended. Leave things to the viewers imaginations.

I loved this show, but it did seem to me that Dungeon Master TOYED with them a lot. I didn't think he was really trying to get them home. So I started thinking maybe there was some goal they each needed to reach, some self growth before they could make it home. I was sorry they never had a final episode that did that.

Anyone else realize the weapons are kinda cheap? I mean, a bow that doest even shoot real arrows, a log, a hat, a shield (not a weapon), a cloak, and a giant glow stick. On top of that they get a frikkin mentally retarted, all thanks to the midget in red :D

@corduroy99 Okay the animation did have some comically bad moments but for me this was far superior because the characters felt far more plausible I was really hooked by the storyline thats almost unheard of in weekly cartoon series and for me Venger is probably one of the greatest foes ever, I did love Thundercats but I got really invested in the characters and story of this, the Dragons graveyard is the best example, really powerful stuff it really felt like their actions had consequences.

Love this show. Own the series and I'm glad to be part of a special time watching animation in the 80's. The stories and themes still hold up and the animation has more detail and flow then even some of the newer shows that are out. I wish Television would get back to this level of art. I guess production cost would be to high. Also make no mistake, this is art without a doubt.

Doctor who is a good example. Old doctor who often had awful acting from some characters and sets that were in danger of falling apart, but the mood of it was much better than new Doctor who, but now its slick and shiny and people like the style of substance.

ok climbing up the cliff while Tiamat attacks?? I call no way!! the penalties would've been way too high for any of them, even with rope climbing skill, to attempt it, and then Eric blocking the fireball from venger with his sheild even though he's still on the rope, again, would've needed at least three nat 20's in a row....I just totally geeked out there didn't I?

I miss unique toons, toys, & cereals. I wish Hub, WGN Retro, & Cartoon Network would get blocks of these to air on Weekend Mornings. Imagine the ratings they could get. All the retro fans now have children in their lives. We watch then the kids in our lives would watch. Basic Cable Networks would make money on shows they don't pay to produce now. Fun fact, actually: Cavalier, Barbarian and Acrobat (Thief-Acrobat to be precise) were all some of the first class variants developed for AD&D and were published shortly before this show started production. Actually, the "weird" class here is wizard, as there were only "Magic Users" in AD&D, not wizards.
The were also soon to be reprinted in the Unearthed Arcana supplement for AD&D, and TSR was likely trying to breed interest in their 'new' character classes by using them in this show.

As much as the DM is always right, and on the other hand moral ambiguity in characters is preferable (to me) than black-and-white morality, the DM that straight up tells their players that a character "is evil" is doing a pretty sucky job. At least make a (hidden) intuition roll or something, before saying "YOU THINK he's killing babies because he likes it, not because it's his job".

I read that the network censorship (as well as the ever present parents groups) forced a huge number of changes on the original script as well as the character themselves. Eric,for example,wasn't originally the asshole he was in the series. He initially was going to be an insecure kid that slowly matures into leadership. But his character was then portrayed as the one that goes against the group just to preach to kids the maxim of "The group is always right; the complainer is always wrong".
