This song's lyrics were written by swashbuckling Brit Eric Maschwitz (AKA Holt Marvell) in 1936 for legendary Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong after the breakup of a serious affair. Maschwitz later became an intelligence agent in WW2.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THESE SINATRA GEMS....HIS VOICE WAS AT ITS PEAK....SO CLEAR (NOT RASPY FROM TOO MUCH BOOZE AND CIGARETTES) MOST OF THE COLUMBIA RECORDINGS SOUND GREAT.

A gorgeous song with clear, crisp lyrics and melody that they don't create anymore. Sinatra's version is moving and lovely.

This is not an easy song to sing. Try it sometime. For me this is the definitive version. Frank perfectly captures the emotional highs and lows required to tell the story of the song.

watch the (strangely unknown) movie Deja Vu... the scene with this in the background is magical. By the way this is not the Denzel Washington movie of the same name.
