1. Primo intermedio: L'armonia delle sfere L'Armonia discende sulla Terra accompagnata dalle Sirene, Parche e dai Pianeti; i mortali sono invitati a festeggiare con la coppia dei fidanzati. 1. I live in Florence.. this city was the New York of XVI-XVII century! We ruled! The best european and italian artists, musicians, actors and singers lived and worked here!! If you come and visit Florence, please think about that: poliphony, madrigals, modern theatre, opera, everything was born and developed in these courts, streets and palaces!!
I cant tell you how much I appreciate being able to access and view this. I once had this on a laser disc imported from Japan. I never expected to see this again.
I remember taping this off Channel 4 around Christmas 1989. One of the most beautiful music experiences I have ever had. I never forgot this performance. Wonderful!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this treasure. I have been looking for this music for years. I never knew of a video program--I just had been missing a CD I found once in a university library--music to release me into joy and dreams. So glad to have found it again. Bellissima.
I was lucky to find the VHS(the original Taverner Consort CD recording is practically IMPOSSIBLE to find). Was able to record an exellent copy onto DVD(luckly before my DVD recorder broke!). It's my most treasured DVD in my collection. The Taverner TV production was accurate in it's costumes- the book on the wedding("The Medici Wedding of 1589" by James Saslow) includes color drawings of the costumes actually used in the 1589 royal wedding. Preparations for the actual wedding lasted a year.
This was a Thames Television commission broadcast around Christmas time in 1989 and never, to my knowledge, repeated. An ephemera, as in the case of the original performance in 1589. A re-mastered DVD release would be great but I doubt there would be enough commercial interest even if the original masters were available.
A VHS video was released by EMI Classics ( MVD 99 123 23) together with a CD of the soundtrack (CDC 7 47998 2) and is a Thames Television / Taverner Consort production.
I'd never seen a Court Masque before- now I know why they were the "blockbusters" of the 16th and 17th centuries! I'd love to see it done using 16th Century style staging ala "Farinelli" or "Orfeo".
style of writing is close to that of the canard, a homophonic texture sempilce with a cadence at the end of each verse. However, due to fly virtuoso and vocal cadences, the impression that one has to 'listen is completely different.>inverti
Ever heard of the Yahoo! Group (mailing list) called OperaShare? :) All sorts of out-of-print and live recordings get posted there. Most videos on my channel are from that place. :)
You need to be invited by a person who is a member and an active uploader. I am a member, but haven't uploaded much in the past year or so, so I cannot send you an invitation. :(((

The Huelgas Ensemble's recording of this directed by Paul Van Nevel is superb.
