Incredible; but does anyone know why this edition is so totally different from other recordings? (And all scores I've seen). Is it just another Liszt edition that does not get played much, or did Horowitz really change it that much? (As he is wont to do in other Liszt works...) Thanks.
From the almost unbearable lonely tristesse to the dark storm to the mighty elation of the human spirit, Horowitz truly captures the essence of this masterpiece. This recording is so deep, so haunting, so human. It makes me feel blessed to be among the living. Incredible.
According to recent biographical research, Liszt in later life resisted hearing his Vallée d'Obermann. Apparently whenever a student brought the piece to play he declined to hear it ... "his music seemed to be burdened with memories for him, some too painful to bear".
The final volume of Alan Walker's monumental study (Franz Liszt, Vol. 3: The Final Years, 1861-1886 ) draws upon some recent scholarship to present a more complete picture of Liszt's life and achievements than had been previously possible

Horowitz's rendering of this beautiful piece is simply exquisite and unsurpassable indeed.
