That was the worst thing you can do in space. Now you have increased orbital debris to thousands of small particles causing a higher level of threat to existing spacecraft in that particular orbit, not to mention endangering the ISS, STS and COSMO. This also fueled the interest of china to do the same and "pollute" the "sweet spot of retrograde orbits. This was obsolutely stupid.
@unreal1714 Did you watch the whole video? The missile was to break the satellite up into smaller pieces so it would ensure burn-up through re-entry. Nothing was going back into orbit.
The point was too destroy any secret data or technology before it gets into the hands of china, russia, enemy nations...etc. It's very simple. A nation should protect it's secrets. Don't you agree?
Exactly. A 1000 lb tank of hydrazene would never survive reentry. The real reason for this shoot was to minimize the potential for top secret technologies to fall into the wrong hands. A broken up satellite will burn up more thoroughly than one that starts out in one piece.
Sorry dude, they are not testing a new class of missile. They have had the SM3 missile for a while now. They just adjusted the seeker to track a satellite vs. another missile.
Display of power.
