Yes, dwarves have a much larger presence than in LOTRs, which pretty much only had Gimlee. The story of the Hobbit centers around this band of dwarves reclaiming their treasure, honor and kingdom back, largely from Smaug the dragon.
@TheJediCharles Excuse me sir but I cannot let this go unnoticed. How dare you call yourself a Lord of the Rings fan when you just spelled Gimli, "Gimlee"....Blasphemy good sir...pure blasphemy

hmmm....does anyone know their 3-D glasses? I brought home a pair of Real D 3-D glasses from the theater today (they look like tinted shades, not a red and blue pair), tried watching this, and it didn't look right.
@PainMonkey There are different ways of viewing 3D, the cinema screens will use the polarised glasses like you have, the red and cyan picture he holds up in this vid will require red and cyan glasses to view.
There's also another way that many TVs use where each frame switches to each eye and the glasses black out each eye in turn very fast so each eye sees the frame it's meant to.
I've never seen a 3D film. I've been told that some are pretty crappy in terms of actual 3d content. But if these guys are doing it, it will come out well and I will watch it in 3D.
Oh god. I really hope that like so many movies today they dont focus so much on the visual effects that the rest of the movie fails. I hope the movie will be good!
@69southpole Umm....its peter jackson. worry no more, and love the man who loves to make you a film, using the greatest created literature of the past century. All the people of these films have the purest of intentions and the strongest of passions for their work. it's a shame we don't all have the same in our own work, along with their camaraderie.
This might have impressed me as a kid. Just can't get excited when a film has an infinite amount of money to get the results they need. I mean 48 Red Epics and the best crew of technicians money can buy. How could they NOT make it perfect?
I'm more impressed when a small film gets by on ingenuity.
why not use the old school method 3d with lots of cameras that creates an illusion of space and not only the illusion of characters and things jumping out of screen ? waiting to see the result ..
As much as I am looking forward to this movie, I've seen about 5 movies in 3D and not one has come close to satisfying me. Not once have I left a theater after seeing a 3D film and said "Man, I'm happy I saw it in 3D. It was awesome!" Not stinking once. So I'll be seeing this in 2D and saving myself the money. Sorry Peter had to jump on this bandwagon. But I'm not giving another dollar to the 3D machine.
I think I'm going to watch this in 2D, although it kinda makes me feel bad because Pete and the crew are putting so much effort into making it look good, but I just despise 3D cinema :(
Those glasses just don't work for me. I always feel like taking them off.
I was so scared that they were going to mess up this movie when the told us they were filming it in 3D, but after watching this video, I feel comforted because they are not taking the normal route that filmmakers do and just convert a 2D film into a 3D film and make it look crap. They're really putting some proper thought into this and I am so excited.
I think the 48fps is going to be the factor that truly separates this from all previous attempts at 3D films. It will be so much smoother. The fact is 24fps is about the bare minimum we can see as continuous motion, any slower and we start to see it as a sequence of still images, like a flipbook. Adding 3D into the 24 fps mix just ends in eye strain and headaches for a lot of people. With a double speed frame rate the 3D will actually seem real, not like a gimmick.
Holy crap, Mirkwood... I just read the part where Bilbo climbed up that big tree and catching some fresh air, it's so awesome to actually see it in the behind the scenes.
As happy I am about seeing Elijah Wood play Frodo again, Frodo wasn't even in The Hobbit. How is Peter Jackson going to fit Frodo in the story? And Legolas?
@moonlight1ify I saw Elijah interviewed a few weeks ago on Graham Norton (an english chat show) and Elijah told him that Peter is going to show clips of the future (pan forward) and have little snippets of the lord of the rings but footage which is set in the lord of the rings but wasnt in the film if you get where im coming from
It's amazing to see how little the returning actors have changed when you think it's been over 12 years since they last shot for LOTR.
Cate Blanchett, for instance looks as stunning as ever. Elijah Wood doesn't seem to changed a bit. As for the other actors: Elrond shows a bit more wear and Christopher Lee looked tired in the last blog. Ian McKellen though looks just as in LOTR.
@sexydanny21awesome Will it, though? It's still 24 fps for each eye. So you wouldn't see the difference from a standard 24 FPS movie, and a 48 FPS 3D movie.
There would obviously be a difference between a 24FPS 3D movie and a 48FPS 3D, but afaik 3D movies have never been made in 24 FPS.
I gotta admit, I'm kinda scared cuz I have a feeling that this movie won't turn out very well. I always recall George Lucas'es catastrophical prequels of Star Wars...
That's because George Lucas never was a good director anyway. He was better at producing. "Star Wars" was ok but "Return of the Jedi" just seemed to drag on from the start. Good sequences but overall it was a disappointing movie. The director, Marquand, was just Lucas' puppet.
The best Star Wars movie ever, "The Empire Strikes Back" was of course not directed or cut by George Lucas but by Irvin Kirshner. Let us never mention the Star Wars "prequels" ever again...
@AudieHolland Yeah, you're right - let's drop the whole Lucas-thing. Another reason I think I'm going to be dissapointed than the Hobbit is simply because I don't believe that any movie will top the mind-blowing experience I had when I saw The Lord of the Rings for the first time. And when I think about it, it's really stupid to even think that the Hobbit will have a chance to turn out something bigger, because the book itself isn't nearly half as good as The Lord of the Rings.
@EvilDarkChris "it's really stupid to even think that the Hobbit will have a chance to turn out something bigger, because the book itself isn't nearly half as good as The Lord of the Rings." this is my problem. actually, it is YOUR problem.
Of "The Hobbit" won't be nearly as big as "The Lord Of The Rings." However, "The Hobbit" is the better book. It is more compact and the premise is more modest. A small expedition of Dwarves led by an old wizard with a Hobbit guide to find their long lost gold...
I agree with actor Bernard Hill that Tolkien should have edited LOTR. For instance, the Ride of the Rohirrim is not as exciting in the original book. Example: the king's rousing speech was never made in the book.
@AudieHolland not true, LOTR is way better. It has a more developed story line, a better look into Middle Earth, a better interpretation of the different cultures, a more believable plot, a greater foe, and many more things.Don't get me wrong, I adore the hobbit, but saying it is better than the Lord of the Rings is foolish. As for editing, that's so stupid, tolkien spent about 16 years on this book ( source LOTR special features). I'm sure books like the silmarillion are way better without it.
Have you read The Lord Of The Rings? It is way too long and only because it has some great parts does not mean it is perfect. The Hobbit is more rounded and doesn't spend time on such miscasts or even plot mistakes like Tom Bombadil and Faramir.
Have you compared The Battle of the Pelennor from the book to the film? That part is nowhere near as epic as Jackson made it in the film. The book describes it after the fact it happened. The Silmarillion is unreadable, period.
@AudieHolland yes I read lord of the rings, the hobbit can not compare to LOTR, why? because the story is not as developed. The reason you can't read LOTR or the Silmarillion is because you have the attention span of a flea.
@AudieHolland sorry, I don't know why I said that last part, it;s not a good insult, and it still was meant to be one, I disagree with you, and that's that.
I read The Lord Of The Rings more times than I read The Hobbit. But it doesn't make the Tom Bombadil or Battle of the Pelennor any better. Jackson did it much better in the film. Which is not to say that he's not without his faults or that the original isn't better in other places. I for one could do without the added avalanche of skulls and the stupid cameos Jackson and co. did as the corsairs.
A sorry excuse for an insult indeed. One of your lesser shortcomings I'm sure.
@AudieHolland no more apologies, Tom is the most hobbit book style character in LOTR, Bilbo in LOTR has more depth. All the characters in the hobbit you have to know, that's one of the big problems with it. thirteen dwarves, a hobbit, and a wizard. In LOTR we have more time to connect with the characters. here, grow up, and in a few years we can talk about how you were wrong, ok, bye.
@AudieHolland That is your opinion. That's all. A hell of a lot of people prefer the books and they are just as right as you are. I myself, prefer the films.
i dont know how great the first movie will be because the first half of the book is rather uneventful compared to the lotr movies. however the second movie is gunna be epic.
These hobbit videos on youtube are like heroin for me. I've been searching for a new one almost every week since the 3rd. This movie is gonna be the best.
@twizelby Umm yeah there are. There's an entire adventure that could be made off of Tom Bombadil. There's an entire origins story that could be told (basically the first five minutes of Fellowship), and, of course, Peter's probably clever enough to fill in a lot of missing gaps. Oh, and don't forget the fan-work. That's often almost as much fun as the real movies.
That drawing looks amazing with 3d glasses

@AudieHolland yes I read lord of the rings, the hobbit can not compare to LOTR, why? because the story is not as developed. The reason you can't read LOTR or the Silmarillion is because you have the attention span of a flea.
TadCornell 2 months ago
@AudieHolland sorry, I don't know why I said that last part, it;s not a good insult, and it still was meant to be one, I disagree with you, and that's that.
TadCornell 2 months ago
@TadCornell
AudieHolland 2 months ago
@AudieHolland no more apologies, Tom is the most hobbit book style character in LOTR, Bilbo in LOTR has more depth. All the characters in the hobbit you have to know, that's one of the big problems with it. thirteen dwarves, a hobbit, and a wizard. In LOTR we have more time to connect with the characters. here, grow up, and in a few years we can talk about how you were wrong, ok, bye.

@AudieHolland That is your opinion. That's all. A hell of a lot of people prefer the books and they are just as right as you are. I myself, prefer the films.

00:56 The tone of Peter Jackson's voice sounds like he's about to say something like "I love the smell of Hobbit feet in the morning!" hehehe!

Peter Jackson always takes filmmaking to a whole other level.
48 RED cameras? my god, BEAUTIFUL!

when I think about this movie I get depressed because there are no more lord of the rings books to make movies into.
twizelby 3 months ago
@twizelby Umm yeah there are. There's an entire adventure that could be made off of Tom Bombadil. There's an entire origins story that could be told (basically the first five minutes of Fellowship), and, of course, Peter's probably clever enough to fill in a lot of missing gaps. Oh, and don't forget the fan-work. That's often almost as much fun as the real movies.
