2 stroke diesels do not use crankcase to scavenge but rather a scavenging blower instead, and so do not need to mix oil into the fuel. Commers werent, but they can also be turbocharged.
2 strokes dont have a power band so they rev up instantly giving it about 2xs the torque, now make a diesel 2 stroke turbo chage it...your asking to get hurt.they have extreme untamed power.and i love that!
The problem with the TS3 was running backwards if you were not careful letting the clutch out at traffic lights etc. It was easy to stop it, just stall it in top gear. When the M6 opened at Preston they would de-coke themselves with a shower of red hot sparks from the exhaust.
The plant where I served my fitting apprenticeship had a coal fired boiler. Coal was hauled in with the later model Commer with the TS3 engine. Believe me, that little engine of about 3 litres can really bark!! It will pull away from right down in the revs and sounds good doing it.
For discussion; It is my understanding that TS in the engine model stands for Tillings Stevens. This was the english company who developed the engine before the Rootes group made it
Sounds quite like a Detroit Diesel 6V-53N.

TS3 were pretty reliable for their era.
Meanest 3 cylinder truck motor ever.
